The San Luis Valley region around La Jara hosts several RV-friendly campgrounds with varied amenities. Cool Sunshine RV Park in Alamosa provides full hookups with 50-amp electric service, water, and sewer connections on level sites with modern facilities. Woods & River RV Park in Del Norte accommodates big rigs with spacious pull-through sites, while Blanca RV Park offers full hookup sites with picnic tables and fire rings. South Fork Lodge & RV Park operates seasonally from mid-May through October 31, featuring full hookup sites suitable for larger motorhomes. Sites throughout these parks typically have gravel pads with sufficient space for slide-outs, though spacing varies by location. "Very friendly lady in office. Small park but nice for a little city park. Back in spaces are close to each other. Pull throughs have more room between spaces."

Across the region, most RV parks remain open during summer and fall, with several closing for winter between late October and mid-May. Reservations are strongly recommended during peak season from June through September. Many parks offer sanitary dump stations, though Canon Bonito RV Park features unique high-altitude camping at 8,100 feet that appeals to those seeking cooler summer temperatures. Cell service varies significantly, with parks closer to towns like Alamosa providing reliable coverage. A recent review noted, "At an altitude of 8100 feet I enjoyed pleasant days 76° and cool night 56°. Pet friendly park with WiFi and good Verizon cell service." Some parks implement breed restrictions for pets, and train noise affects campgrounds near railroad tracks, particularly in Alamosa where guests report being awakened by passing trains with loud whistles.

      Questa Lodge & RV Resort

RV park with a campground feel

Nice park nestled at the foot of the mountains and on the banks of the Red River. Nicely landscaped with two ponds and a river walk. Location is great for visiting Rio Grande del Norte NM and the Wild Rivers Recreation Area. Just north of Taos too. Nicely shaded, level sites with full hookups. Nice picnic table and grill. Might be a little tight for big rigs, but my little Casita was quite happy. Very friendly folks in the office. Clean laundry and restroom. My site backed up to the river and the sound of the rushing water was the perfect lullaby.

      Columbine Campground (NM)

      June 2025

We had a blast staying here. 23 ft travel trailer Water from hydrants only, no connections, no dump, and they clean vault toilets Hiking trails from the campground Host was very knowledgeable and helpful

Some sites are short, very few are level, some have a steep slope. Good shade and sun mix , mature trees, nice creek flows through the campground , it’s very pretty and relaxing. The loop to the left side near the host is more level and can handle bigger RVs but overall this is not a big rig campground. Some rigs could not get level…….

Lots of places to explore nearby.

      We will stay again

      Del Norte City Park

      Only One Night Stay Allowed

This is an interesting spot to stay the night. It is right on the river and there are 1-5 sites with a playground, bathrooms, bbq pit, and a dump station. I'm not sure who takes care of this park but they have done a great job!

It is not pet friendly so keep them on a leash and walk them off property.

It is a free site but you can only stay 1 night max. It is not for tents but it will fit RV's and campervans just fine. Maximum RV length is 35 feet.

The best thing about this site is that it is within walking distance of Three Barrel Brewing Company! Excellent beer and a legit pizza oven!

      Alamosa KOA

      Friendly, Beautiful KOA in Alamosa

The Alamosa KOA was chosen by our family because we like to have the option for swimming at the end of a hard day of play in the National Parks. We made our reservation for our site in March, a mere three months before our mid-week, June 7 arrival.

This KOA has a nice sized heated, outdoor pool with reasonable hours, closing around 8:00 PM. The pool temperature was warm enough for even the adults to slip right into it. There is also a fantastic playground with updated equipment, including an elevated tunnel system that ends with safety slides. When you have a small child who loves to play, especially a special needs child, this is a big deal! Other amenities include showers and laundry facilities (we did not use either but they looked nice). Wi-Fi is advertised, and the signal is available, but was not even fast or reliable enough to load photos from Instagram or Twitter. Streaming would be out of the question, but it would probably suffice for checking email.

One of the more unique benefits offered at this KOA include on-site Hunt Brothers Pizza and breadsticks. Not only can you get hot, fresh pizza here, made to order, but they will deliver it to your site! In addition, they deliver wood and ice. This site also offers a weekend pancake breakfast (seasonal).

The RV sites were leveled very well, and they have both 30-amp and 50-amp sites available. There are small shade trees scattered throughout the camping area, but they are still quite young and small. I read some previous reviews that felt the sites were too close together. Although there was little privacy, we have certainly had less room between sites than we had in Alamosa. Perhaps with slide-outs it might be more compact, but our little Starcraft fit in just fine. In addition to RV sites, there are tent sites and camping cabins available.

Our take-away from Alamosa KOA: The view from the campsite and the kindness and helpfulness of the hosts, the Martin family, make this a return-trip campground for sure! Any questions for us about this site? Leave them in the comments below!

      Alamosa

      Secluded and clean

Beautiful spot, shared with one other truck a few spots away. Clean enough portapotty. Fire rings and picnic tables at every spot. Gravel road from both directions is choppy but ok. Can only go up to 30mph without bouncing too much. Worth it. Tent and pull through spots. No cell service.

      Mosca Campground

      Nicely planned campground

Mosca was located inside the San Juan Wildlife Refuge, close to Sand Dunes National Park. Loop A has power, loop B was closed for the season, all covered picnic tables to protect from prevailing wind and sunlight in the summer, fire rings, basketball court and toilets with handicap accessibility available. Loop C was open. Dumpsters and dump station available. 2 bars of T-Mobile with LTE

    Guide to La Jara

The San Luis Valley offers a high desert camping experience with elevations around 8,100 feet, creating significant temperature variations between day and night. La Jara serves as a convenient base for exploring RV campgrounds throughout southern Colorado and northern New Mexico. Summer temperatures typically range from mid-70s during the day to mid-50s at night.

    What to do

Fishing at riverside sites: Woods & River RV Park provides immediate access to the Rio Grande for fishing enthusiasts. "The fishing was awesome. The Rio Grande flows by and so do the trout. When we were there, fishing was free every 1st weekend of the month," notes one visitor to Woods & River RV Park.

Hot springs soaking: After exploring the area, relax at nearby hot spring facilities. "The Hot springs consist of a large outdoor pool and a couple of smaller pools. It's $15 to soak or half price if you camp there. The Greenhouse pool is 21+ for an additional $3," mentions a camper at Sand Dunes Recreation.

Hiking trails: Access numerous trails within short driving distance from La Jara campgrounds. "Lots of trees and Many Many deer in the evenings for your entertainment," shares a guest at Canon Bonito, noting the wildlife viewing opportunities on nearby walks.

    What campers like

Riverside relaxation: Many campgrounds in the region offer direct river access. "The river sites are huge. The bathrooms and laundry room are renovated (and they do not run out of hot water)," writes a visitor about Sky Mountain Resort RV Park, which features sites along Rio Chama.

High-altitude climate benefits: The elevation provides welcome relief during summer months. "This is my type of park. Located in a beautiful valley giving away to peaceful nights. At an altitude of 8100 feet I enjoyed pleasant days 76° and cool night 56°," notes a camper at Canon Bonito RV & Fisherman's Club.

Campground amenities: Many parks offer unexpected features beyond basic hookups. "They even have an exercise room, grill area, dog area, nice covered patio areas for chillin' 😀 We will definitely stay here again," shares one camper about Cool Sunshine RV Park.

    What you should know

Train noise factors: Several RV parks in the region experience railroad noise. "Beautiful campground with level sites. Come prepared, it is in the middle of downtown so a lot of traffic noise of loud cars racing down the road and it is right next to the railroad tracks. The train whistle is deafening and will rattle your teeth," warns a visitor to Cool Sunshine RV Park.

Seasonal operation schedule: Most RV campgrounds in the area have limited operating seasons. "The campground is super clean and well maintained. Lots of folks who come here every year," notes a camper at Sky Mountain Resort RV Park, which operates from May 15 to October 15.

Spacing between sites: Site spacing varies significantly between campgrounds. "The 4 or 5 tent sites were secluded, beautiful grounds, clean restrooms and showers just built. Fire pit provided and a bbq grill offered if needed," shares a visitor at Rio Chama RV Park, highlighting the more spacious options available.

    Tips for camping with families

Water recreation options: Many families appreciate campgrounds with swimming facilities. "We love this place. Our family has been coming here over the years, and it's still a favorite. The pools are artesian hot springs. The pools are extremely kid friendly, and there are greenhouses with 21+ soaking and bar," shares a family who regularly visits Sand Dunes Recreation.

Playground amenities: Some campgrounds offer dedicated children's facilities. "Office was accommodating and let us arrive after posted hours with an easy phone call. Fun kids area with playground and treehouse with zip line," notes a family who stayed at Woods & River RV Park.

Budget-friendly options: Families can find affordable camping near La Jara. "We get a weekend away for about 80 bucks for two nights and swimming, and we can bring our kids and dog....it's a winner!" mentions a regular visitor to Sand Dunes Recreation, highlighting the value.

    Tips from RVers

Site positioning challenges: Some RV campgrounds near La Jara have unusual hookup configurations. "Hookups are new but all seem to be placed too far up which requires you to pull your trailer to the end of the site to align hookups; otherwise you will need to run lengths of sewer and electric to connect," notes an RVer who stayed for an extended period.

Weather considerations: The high elevation affects RV systems differently. "We had just spent two nights along the highway due to RV needing repairs. It was a full hookup, but the tap was broke so we had to tap into the neighbor's waterline with a splitter," shares an RVer at Blanca RV Park, highlighting the importance of winter preparation.

Extended stay options: Some rv campgrounds near La Jara, Colorado accommodate longer visits. "Stayed here a month and 2 days during this COVID-19 mess! Park Manager Lady is such a nice person! Beautiful grounds along the Rio Grande River with trail and gazebos for a very relaxing and restful stay," reports an extended-stay RVer.
