Best Campgrounds near Antonito, CO

The San Luis Valley surrounding Antonito, Colorado features a diverse range of camping options managed by multiple agencies. Rio Grande National Forest provides several established campgrounds including Aspen Glade and Mogote Campground, both operating seasonally from May through mid-September. Private options like Ponderosa Campground offer more amenities with cabins, RV hookups, and shower facilities, while Canon Bonito caters specifically to RV campers and fishing enthusiasts. The Conejos River corridor serves as a focal point for many camping areas, with sites positioned along its banks for easy fishing access and scenic views of the surrounding mountains.

Camping permits and seasonal considerations significantly impact accessibility in the region. Most Forest Service campgrounds require fees and operate only during summer months, typically closing by mid-September due to high elevation weather patterns. As one camper noted about Ponderosa Campground, "The drive in is easy on Route 17 and does not require a vehicle with high ground clearance." However, some of the more remote sites may require four-wheel drive vehicles, particularly after rain. Fire restrictions are common during dry summer months, and strong winds can affect camping comfort. Cell service remains spotty throughout much of the area, with Verizon providing limited coverage in some locations.

Fishing access represents a major draw for campers in the Antonito area. The Conejos River and nearby streams offer excellent trout fishing opportunities, with several campgrounds positioned specifically for angler access. Wildlife viewing opportunities abound, with campers reporting deer sightings and diverse bird populations. Star-gazing conditions are exceptional due to minimal light pollution, particularly at higher elevation sites. Winter camping options are limited, though some areas remain accessible for hardy visitors. As one reviewer mentioned about Ponderosa Campground, "Hiking on the CDT is near the campground and fishing is right in the campground. The steam train is right up the pass," highlighting the area's recreational diversity beyond just camping.

    BLM Mt. Blanca Rd. Dispersed

    Two nights

We set up the first night with a fire and quiet evening as we had plans to visit the park the next day. After hiking the park we ended up back here again for a fire and time for campfire fresh bread. It is a great spot with hiking and the park close by.

BLM Near Great Sand Dunes Hwy 150

    By-passed

There were alot of great spots but we opted to not stay as we have a dog and there were tons of young cactus to be cautious of.

Rio Grande Rivercamp by John Dunn Bridge

    Overnight stay

After fining out our first couple choices were on recently closed FR’s we found this gem. We took the John Dunn Bridge road in which is rough but manageable in a vehicle with good suspension. We enjoyed a lovely evening. The next morning we were awoken by what sounded like new campers moving in but it ended up being a hot air balloon being prepared for launching. We had a bird’s eye view of it all. One of us could have even joined them for a ride as they had room for one. It was a great experience. There is a direct road out to Hwy 64 that doesn’t involve the bridge and rough road to the top of the gorge.
    Definitely worth a visit.

    Cebolla Mesa

    Nice spot

There was not a lot spots here, but these spots are tucked right beside a big gorge with a trail down to the river. The trail leads down to the Rio Grande and is challenging. Peaceful and good views. This spot is do able with 2 wheel drive. The only problems you would have is if there was a big rain.

    Dispersed Camping Near Taos

    My Favorite kind of campsite.

Large wide open spots in each of the 3 observable pull offs. The road is dirt and high clearance is preferable if you plan on hiking to the hot springs or driving down to / crossing the bridge over the river but this place is magical. Views for days and most sites are a short walk from the edge.

    Sacred White Shell Mountain

Great spot outside of Great Sand Dunes

Spots available as soon as 1/4 mile up the road. Windy, sandy, 20 minutes from NP front gate. Would recommend

    Blanca RV Park

    Corrupt Owner

If I could give less than 1 star, I would.

Rented a spot out for a month, less than a week after moving the rv on the property we get an eviction notice for the end of our pay period with no reason as to why. We had done nothing out of the ordinary, no trash left outside, waste properly disposed of. We were never warned if we were too loud during a quiet hour or anything else of the sort, otherwise behaviors or anything else would have been corrected. The only thing we had to do was change the brakes on our car, drive the vechilce around, and was yelled at that we were going too fast despite no clear signage for speed limit. When asked, we were told literally "We dont know, talk to Adam." Adam is apparently the owner. When I asked if I could have a phone number or contact info to reach him I was told no. There are no rules or regulations posted for the camp grounds posted or otherwise, no signage, not even a speed limit sign to officially post or regulate anything. Even when you pay, there is no info sheet or regulations sheet they give you so that you have the proper information for the park amenities and rules. The staff are rather rude in demeanor and very judgemental, seeming to take advantage of the fact there are no clear rules or regulations against anyone new to the park, anyone new to this little residential "clique" they have going on here. I wouldnt waste my money into these people's corrupt pockets or anyone else's in the town of Blanca for that matter. Spend your good money somewhere that at least has a hot shower and a good environment 👌

Tres Piedras on Forest Road 64G

    Quite, secluded

Quiet area. If you’re using Google Maps it may say 64 is closed, although it wasn’t. I’d watch road conditions, could get muddy if wet. Not too much activity over the weekend ( although weather was in 30s/40s ). Plenty of wood was left by the fire pit at our site.

What campers like

River sounds for sleeping: Sites at Aspen Glade Campground along the water are highly rated. John M. shares: "The lower campground sits right on the Conejos River. Tons of shade under giant pine trees. Great fishing access to public waters." The "noise of the river was nice" according to another reviewer.

Star viewing opportunities: The Sacred White Shell Mountain dispersed area offers exceptional dark sky viewing. "Dark skies there. You can see the Milky Way with the naked eye," reports one camper, who spent over a week at this free BLM site located about 45 minutes from Antonito.

Privacy between sites: Many campers appreciate the spacing at Rio Grande National Forest Mogote Campground. "The campground was very clean and campsites offered above average privacy," notes John M., who adds that "the lower loop offers sites close to the Conejos river."

What you should know

Seasonal insect considerations: Deer flies can be problematic at certain times. A Ponderosa Campground visitor notes: "Stunning spot, lots of tent sites, room for maybe 12 campers of modest length, mine is 26'. Unknown if it's seasonal but the biting flies, primarily deer flies are beyond bearable."

Cell service variability: Coverage is inconsistent throughout the region. At The Chicken Ranch, "Views are amazing! Very quiet and the star gazing is some of the best," according to Jennifer T., but many sites throughout the area report limited connectivity except for Sacred White Shell Mountain where "Verizon was good 2-3 bars with LTE."

Weather patterns: Afternoon rain showers are common during summer months. "Small rain events happen frequently in the afternoon, but they never last long and some don't make it to the area, but you can see them in the distance," reports a visitor to Sacred White Shell Mountain dispersed camping area.

Tips for camping with families

Multi-generational camping spots: Several campgrounds have long histories of family use. At Aspen Glade, Matthew C. shares: "My family has been camping here since before I was born. I grew up here. My cousins and I built a rock damn across the river and I cought my first fish here. My children now get to enjoy this piece of majic."

Kid-friendly water access: The day use areas provide safe river exploration. "Nice little day use area right next to the river," notes Angelica B. about Aspen Glade, while another camper mentioned: "We tent camped with our family of 4 for 4 nights... The river made for great bathing."

Educational opportunities: Canon Bonito and surrounding areas offer wildlife viewing for children. "Located in a beautiful valley giving away to peaceful nights," writes Joseph W., noting the pet-friendly environment and pleasant daytime temperatures around 76°F.

Tips from RVers

Level site availability: Finding flat spots can be important for larger rigs. At Sacred White Shell Mountain, "We setup camp in the back of the area and were able to get level without blocks! Most everyone else needed blocks, but they didn't seem to have much problem leveling."

Size limitations: Some campsites have restrictions or challenges for larger RVs. "Ok for small campers but I wouldn't take anything too big as the spaces are small and it is very tight to maneuver," cautions Chris T. about Los Pinos Campground, while noting there are only "4-5 improved campsites with vault toilets."

Water and dump station access: Most RVers need to plan for water hauling. "No hookups but no fee," notes a Sacred White Shell Mountain visitor, while others recommend utilizing the dump station at Great Sand Dunes National Park, about 20-25 minutes from several dispersed camping areas near Antonito.
