Four Mile Road Dispersed camping permits dogs throughout White River National Forest, offering primitive camping without services. Gateway RV Park, Ami's Acres Campground, Carbondale-Crystal River KOA, and Redstone Campground provide established pet-friendly options with various amenities. The sites remain clean despite heavy use by pet owners. Most campgrounds require dogs to be leashed, though specifics vary by location. Pet waste disposal is available at developed sites like the KOA, which maintains bathroom facilities cleaned daily. RV sites typically include full hookups alongside picnic tables and fire rings, with both pull-through and back-in options available.

Beaver Creek Trail access points near Four Mile Road provide excellent dog hiking opportunities through aspen groves and mountain terrain. The paved bike path connecting Carbondale to Glenwood Springs allows for dog walking with spectacular mountain views. Gateway RV Park sits beside the Roaring Fork River, giving dogs water access during summer months. Most sites have enough separation between campers to minimize pet conflicts. Highway noise affects some campgrounds, particularly Gateway RV Park, though riverside sites mask road sounds with rushing water. Winter camping with pets requires additional preparation, as Four Mile Road becomes snowbound, though overnight parking for van campers is permitted at Sunlight Mountain Resort during winter months.

      Glenwood Springs West/Colorado River KOA

      Super Hosts and beautiful campground!

I cannot thank Leslie, Frederick and Tom for their support with my RVing needs! We ended up staying an extra night--such a lovely campground with special touches at every site. If we visit again, I would definitely request a back-in site along the river! Just walking along the river pathway was breathtaking! The dog park is huge and has fun obstacle course activities to encourage interactions with pets. Everything about this KOA is great! We took a day trip to the Iron Mountain Hot Springs (fun!) and to the Rifle River water falls (an easy little hike but WOW! Cool water falls and caves to explore!) Come visit this KOA! You won't be disappointed!

      McClure Campground

      Beautiful well maintained campground.

I came down to Marble, CO from Carbondale with the intention of staying at the Marble campground on a Wednesday but it was full so I went up the road about 10 miles to the McClure campground and was very pleasantly surprised at how much nicer it was than the Marble campground. While Marble did have showers and some sites with water and electricity it was much more crowded and uneven than McClure. McClures sites were all nice and level and several were pull through that could handle fair sized rigs. McClure was a dispersed site at one time but now costs $14/night compared to Marbles $40+ fee. Of course Marble has showers which are worth the extra price to some but McClure had the most important item which was a clean vault toilet. When I got to the campground there were only a couple of other sites occupied so I picked a beautiful level spot only about 150' from the toilet, which is very important to an old man with artificial knees and a weak bladder. By Friday night all the sites were taken and as most other campgrounds were also full there were lots of campers coming through the campground looking for a spot to camp. I had only planned to stay a couple of days but I liked the site so much I stayed for 5 nights. I used it as my base to drive the Crystal River trail which is about 10 miles down the road at Marble. Let me warn you right now, don't do the Crystal River trail unless you have a strong heart and a very sturdy mid sized or smaller vehicle or off-road vehicle because it is very narrow and extremely rough. I've driven some rough country and have a big 4x4 pickup but that trail was all my rig could handle and I left lots of paint on the rocks and trees at the narrower spots. I'm sure half my tires on the drop-off side were in mid air at times and since it is a single track trail if you met someone coming from the other direction one of you would have to back up to a spot that you could pass each other. Very scary. Anyway, back to McClure. The nearest place to get cell service and supplies is Carbondale which is about 20 miles away but if you are self contained and don't need to be on the internet every few minutes this place is great. There was lots of wildlife sharing my site which was fun to watch. I had a doe deer and her boyfriend show up before I even got my tent set up and squirrels and chipmunks were everywhere as were the hummingbirds. I had hummingbirds buzzing up to a foot away from my face to check out my red cap thinking it might be some kind of giant exotic new flower lol. The only reason I didn't give the camp 5 stars is that it is right next to route 133 which it turns out is a main road through this area and traffic noise is sometimes pretty loud, especially early in the mornings on week days. If I am back near that area I will definitely stay in this campground. Almost forgot one other thing. The elevation is high enough that it gets pretty cool most nights, even in July and rain showers came through almost every early morning but the rain never amounted to anything and by mid morning it was beautiful. Camp fees are on the honor system and you need to have cash or checks. Edited to add that if you need a shower there is a community center in Carbondale with nice showers for about $10. Also, Marble has a very nice restaurant/bar with some of the best BBQ you will find anywhere.

      Parry Peak — Psicc

Great campground, close to the pass and lots of hiking.

Some spots close to the road but it gets quiet at night as Independence pass is not heavily trafficked after dark.  It is in a great location, close to Twin Lakes but also all the hiking up the pass.  All first come first serve.  Pets are allowed, we had our dog with us.

      Glenwood Springs West/Colorado River KOA

      Glenwood-“Adjacent”

Let’s just start with the only downside- this campground is not near Glenwood. It’s about 20-25 miles into Glenwood Springs from here. So just know that going into it and everything else is great.

Now onto the awesome campground itself. The people are really friendly and the spots are perfectly level.

Our spot was right on the river which is beautiful. The campground maintains nice grass in the area, fire pits and picnic tables. The park is an all encompassing RV resort. There is a splash pad, a bbq/ picnic area, a trail around the river, a nice store, a pool, a dog park and to top it off big grassy areas to play in. It’s a very nice park.

I would also recommend checking out Rifle Falls (video attached) and Rifle Gap State Park which are both nearby!

      Glenwood Springs West/Colorado River KOA

Cleanest KOA we ever stayed at!

Spotless bathrooms and sites! We were only passing through and needed one night to stay. Arrived after office hours but late arrival registration was easy and we got a site no problem. Showers and bathrooms were spotless. Dog walk and park were also very clean. Nice to see since many “dog walk areas” are filthy and people don’t clean up after their pets. Not the case here!

      Rifle Falls State Park Campground

      Waterfall, trails and friendly staff!

Campground offers easy trails, fishing, great waterfalls and friendly staff. Would recommend the walk in sites for tents. Is pet friendly which was a plus. There are two other state parks nearby and a fish hatchery. Trails range from gravel to mud (especially behind the waterfall), check out the caves and more!

    Guide to Carbondale

Four Mile Road Dispersed camping in White River National Forest offers primitive sites approximately 20 miles from Carbondale. Located at 8,000 feet elevation, the area features aspen groves and mountain terrain with seasonal access limitations. Most campsites sit above 7,300 feet in this region, creating cooler temperatures even during summer months.

    What to do

Explore Crystal River trail systems: Near Avalanche Campground, hikers find several interconnected trails. "There is a nice trail up the mountain that forks into two other trails," notes Anthony S., who found this location an "absolute gem" with its valley setting.

Visit mountain towns within 30 minutes: The historic town of Redstone lies just 1 mile from Redstone White River National Forest. "A mile walk into the quaint town of Redstone, 20min drive to Carbondale or Marble (opposite direction). Fun hikes near by and great fly fishing at the Crystal River," reports Rebeca H.

Access riverfront activities: For water enthusiasts, multiple campgrounds provide river access. "Falling asleep to the sound of the Colorado River literally 3 feet away is just wonderful," explains Kevin A. about tent sites at Glenwood Canyon Resort where campers can enjoy riverside relaxation.

    What campers like

Secluded sites with mountain views: Bogan Flats Campground earns high marks for its setting. "Sites are well spaced so you feel secluded and private," writes Kristin D., who appreciated being "nestled at the base of towering mountains along the Crystal River."

Crystal River fishing access: Riverside camping provides immediate fishing opportunities. "The Crystal River flows through the campground and you can fish right from many of the sites," notes Mitch K., calling Bogan Flats a place that "has it all" for anglers seeking trout.

Well-maintained facilities: Even primitive sites receive attention from staff. At Redstone Campground, visitors appreciate the upkeep. "The bathhouse was simple but clean. The camp hosts were friendly," writes Bendee Z., who awarded five stars for the "excellent" location.

    What you should know

Seasonal road closures affect access: Mountain campgrounds have limited seasons. "Road closed Oct 1st to May 31st," warns Henrietta R. about Basalt Mountain dispersed camping, where sites require traveling "up a dirt road 4 to 10 miles."

Water crossing required at some sites: Four-wheel drive may be necessary for certain areas. "Getting to the campground from the main road involves driving on a one-lane road for about a mile or two, there are places where all-wheel drive is necessary and you will need to drive through a creek," explains Erik S. about Avalanche campground conditions.

Limited cell coverage: Most pet-friendly camping near Carbondale lacks connectivity. "No cell service. Centrally located for exploring Marble and Redstone," reports Kristin D., noting this factor when camping at Bogan Flats.

    Tips for camping with families

Kid-friendly water access: Finding safe river spots matters for families. At Ami's Acres Campground, campers appreciate the amenities. "They also have a kitchen area with microwave, filtered water and a sink for dishes, which was really convenient," notes Rae M. after tent camping with family.

Choose campgrounds with playground options: Some sites offer additional recreation. "Campground has water, showers, even a sandbox for kids," reports Amanda U. about Redstone Campground, making it ideal for families seeking pet-friendly camping near Carbondale.

Plan for temperature fluctuations: Mountain elevations create variable conditions. "It did get coooold during early June, bring a good sleeping bag and warm clothes!!" advises Amy S., who camped at Bogan Flats where river-adjacent sites experience significant overnight cooling.

    Tips from RVers

Prepare for tight spaces: RV sites vary significantly in size. At Gateway RV Park, location trumps spaciousness. "Gateway is a great headquarters for Aspen, to Glenwood Springs and Marble. FHU, friendly hosts, right on the bike path and next to the Roaring Fork River," explains Kimberly H., calling it "not a destination campground" but rather "the best place to park and explore."

Book early during peak seasons: Reservations become essential during busy periods. "We needed a hot shower and some comfort and found both here. It's a bit pricey but has all the hookups," notes Kerry C. about Gateway RV Park, emphasizing its convenience despite being "on a hillside above the river and highway."

Check hookup locations before setup: Some sites have unusual utility placements. "The hookups were all in the back corner of the site, which only reached to one trailer in our site. We had no idea we would need double length power and water to reach the 2nd trailer," shares Carrie R. about her experience at Redstone White River National Forest.
