Best Dog-Friendly Camping near Alamosa, CO

Alamosa KOA features a designated pet-friendly area with convenient amenities for dog owners and a central location for exploring nearby attractions. The campground offers level tent sites, RV spots with full hookups, and basic cabins that welcome pets. Cool Sunshine RV Park provides a small fenced dog park where pets can exercise off-leash with clean facilities located in downtown Alamosa. Both campgrounds enforce leash requirements in common areas and have trash receptacles for pet waste disposal. Sites at Alamosa KOA include fire pits, picnic tables, and grassy areas suitable for pets, though tent sites can be gravelly with limited shade. The KOA staff actively delivers firewood and ice directly to campsites, creating a convenient experience for campers traveling with animals.

Several hiking trails accommodate dogs on leash within a 30-minute drive of Alamosa's pet-friendly campgrounds. Great Sand Dunes National Park allows leashed pets in developed areas including the main parking lot and Piñon Flats Campground, though dogs are prohibited on most trails and sand dunes to protect wildlife. Zapata Falls Campground provides pet-friendly accommodations with access to nearby dog-appropriate hiking routes. Campers note that sites toward the back of Alamosa KOA offer mountain views and quieter surroundings away from the playground noise. The area experiences significant temperature fluctuations, requiring pet owners to monitor for heat during summer days and cold nights year-round. Sites can become muddy after rain or snow, particularly affecting pets that require frequent outdoor access.

Ramble at Great Sand Dunes National Park

    Amazing family tent camping!

"The Ramble test campsite in Evergreen was full of unexpected surprises and delights and has me real excited to stay at Ramble's campground near Great Sand Dunes National Park. Located a short drive from Alamosa's small town main street, the campground is nestled in place and slowly meanders through native dunes and desert scrub. A real pleasant divergent from the typical campground landscape. This is an ideal campground for family car camping, not only for the seasoned campers, but those new to camping as well. The kitchen is outfitted with more than my family needs(2 burner stove, sink with water, storage cabinets and electricity), as well as the conveniences that we too often forget, such as soap and paper towels. I definitely appreciate the use of solar PV at the site to help minimize our impact. The Ramble campground also makes a conscious effort towards water conservation with automatic shut-off low flow fixtures and user controlled footpumps for the kitchen sink. The ample tent pads are convenient to the kitchen, yet far enough away for privacy and nestled into the scrub and dunes to be buffered from strong winds which can and do occur. With spectacular 360 degree views, I would definitely recommend this campsite for those looking for a great natural setting, full of family conveniences and close to world class landscapes!"

    Alamosa KOA

    Friendly, Beautiful KOA in Alamosa

The Alamosa KOA was chosen by our family because we like to have the option for swimming at the end of a hard day of play in the National Parks. We made our reservation for our site in March, a mere three months before our mid-week, June 7 arrival.

This KOA has a nice sized heated, outdoor pool with reasonable hours, closing around 8:00 PM. The pool temperature was warm enough for even the adults to slip right into it. There is also a fantastic playground with updated equipment, including an elevated tunnel system that ends with safety slides. When you have a small child who loves to play, especially a special needs child, this is a big deal! Other amenities include showers and laundry facilities (we did not use either but they looked nice). Wi-Fi is advertised, and the signal is available, but was not even fast or reliable enough to load photos from Instagram or Twitter. Streaming would be out of the question, but it would probably suffice for checking email.

One of the more unique benefits offered at this KOA include on-site Hunt Brothers Pizza and breadsticks. Not only can you get hot, fresh pizza here, made to order, but they will deliver it to your site! In addition, they deliver wood and ice. This site also offers a weekend pancake breakfast (seasonal).

The RV sites were leveled very well, and they have both 30-amp and 50-amp sites available. There are small shade trees scattered throughout the camping area, but they are still quite young and small. I read some previous reviews that felt the sites were too close together. Although there was little privacy, we have certainly had less room between sites than we had in Alamosa. Perhaps with slide-outs it might be more compact, but our little Starcraft fit in just fine. In addition to RV sites, there are tent sites and camping cabins available.

Our take-away from Alamosa KOA: The view from the campsite and the kindness and helpfulness of the hosts, the Martin family, make this a return-trip campground for sure! Any questions for us about this site? Leave them in the comments below!

    Alamosa KOA

    What you expect...

Clean camp, nice amenities. Dog park is a little small, but is nice to have a place for dogs. Pool was very nice. Was disappointed in our tent site as it was all gravel with brush behind us. Pics online showed nice grassy tent sites with big trees. We had dogs with us, and it sucked to only have gravel for them to sit/lie on at our site. Otherwise, friendly place!

    Great Sand Dunes Oasis

Amazing stay with views of the Dunes!

We loved this camp site! It was our first time to tent camp in Colorado and it was great. Several sites to choose from. Some have views of the dunes, some are more secluded. Bathrooms were clean. Very spacious tent site with a fire pit. Our tent sleeps 6 and we had no trouble fitting in the spot.

    Rabbit Hole Ranch

Ranger Review: Trekz Air Aftershokz Headphones at Rabbit Hole Ranch

    **Campground review: **

I chose this spot to scout for my Dyrt Ranger Mission  because I had stayed at a similar place right near here last Summer (see Zapata Under the Stars review) and I was excited to get back out into dispersed wilderness again. The views and solitude of the desert did not disappoint.

After booking I realized I wanted to add an extra night and the hosts got back to me immediately saying it wasn't a problem. I also asked them about the dogs since I was bringing mine to camp with us. They said the dogs were very friendly and it shouldn't be a problem at all. They also let me know I could purchase wood at the site.

We ended up arriving after dark on Friday night and following the directions wasn't a problem. The directions from the hosts after booking are like a scavenger hunt of sorts. It was a bit hard to make out in the dark, but thankfully, we are pretty good with directions...and puzzles. The site is approximately 10 miles from the main road.

This is a dispersed style campground for the most part. There is one site that has a landing pad, grill barrel, and was near the PooLoo and the Woodstock but the others were marked by little orange flags (we noticed those in the morning). Since there weren't clearly marked sites so we did drive around a bit until we saw what looked like remnants of a former campsite and pulled in there.  There weren't big spots to fit our tipi tent but we made it work. I think most of the sites are made for smaller 2 man tents.

We were immediately greeted by one very friendly Pyrenees dog named Kaylee who took an immediate liking to our dogs and began playing with our youngest pup. They seemed to really take to each other. Another one showed up named Deja and seemed to be the protector of the campground. Deja was not a fan of our playful puppy and Deja made it known that our dog was not to be around her. We kept a close eye when Deja and Kaylee came around since they looked so much alike, our puppy was confused as to which one would play and which one would growl and take him down.

That night Deja and Kaylee slept outside out tent the majority of the night while our pups were inside the tent. One of the outside dogs began barking nonstop in the middle of the night and wouldn't stop for a couple hours. This happened both nights. Thankfully I had my aftershokz headphones (with the ear plugs) so that was my saving grace in falling asleep through the barking.

Other than the random dog drama and barking, this site was fantastic! It was quiet and peaceful. Had great views of Mt. Blanca, the Sand Dunes, and easy access to town if needed.

Bathroom: The pooloo was hilarious (see video). The concept and view was fantastic! It was just a bit too close to the big site. If we were the only ones camping there it would have been perfect, but it was far from where we camped and since there were other people camping at the large site, it was a bit awkward to use when kids are running around that can see your face.

Water: We brought plenty of water so we didn't need to see the pump, but if you contact he host, they can operate the well water pump for you.

Firewood: Firewood is for sale on site. Unbundled but large stacks of wood. $6 per stack and it's on the honor system. So please make sure you are being good humans!

Local attractions: From the main road, you are about 30 mins to Sand Dunes National Park, 50 mins from Zapata Falls, 45 mins to Del Norte, and 30 mins from Alamosa. There is also an Alligator and Reptile Refuge about 20 mins North. There is also a large pool/hot spring in Hooper, Co near the refuge (this pool is alligator free).

    **Product Review: **

As a Dyrt Ranger I get the opportunity to receive products to review and a month ago I got these for a biking trip that ended up being cancelled. I wasn't intentionally going to use these and review them on this trip but they ended up being needed for both nights so I figured it is the perfect time! The product is the Air Trekz by Aftershokz https://aftershokz.com/collections/wireless/products/trekz-air

I was super curious when I received these headphones.I can't use normal headphones because they are either are super painful or fall out since my ear canals are very small.

These headphone ROCK! They are super comfortable and stylish. I found that I started using them for just about everything, driving on the phone, riding my bike, walking the dogs, hiking, and even sleeping when it's noisy. As my boyfriend put it "this is the end to people's tone deaf singing, since they can now hear what they sound like".

They are a bit big for my head so the back strap falls down a bit but they never fall off. They come with a set of ear plugs so you can focus on the sound if preferred too.

They come with a really sturdy case that stands up on its own. The base is wider so they don’t get smashed or broken when put in a bag.

The sound quality if pretty good considering you are hearing it from your cheek bones instead of your ear drums. podcasts are clear, music is fluid, and even instrumental music is clear. The only genre that gets a bit wonky is music with heavy bass. The sound just can't compare to professional headphones when it comes to bass.

For the purpose of using these for our trip, I used them on a hike and while sleeping when the dogs outside the tent started barking late night. I was able to fall asleep on the side of my head without worrying about painful ears. They worked like a charm.

    Sacred White Shell Mountain

    Peaceful

Loved everything about this remote spot! The sites were super clean and easy to access. There wasn’t much traffic. You’re down the road from the dunes and about 30 minutes outside Alamosa and other stores. I used the dump station at the sand dunes canoe ground. It was only $8 to fill up water and dump. My cats absolutely loved the area! It was a giant play box for them. Starlink works great. I use Xfinity for phone service and it works ok. Will definitely be back mid Summer. I have a 20ft camper and people were easily driving 5th wheels around here.

    Mosca Campground

    Amazing views

We stayed here for two weeks and every day there were new breathtaking views all around. You feel as if you are walking the top of the world when exploring the area, the entire San Luis Valley gives this feeling. The lake is beautiful and has a beautiful view of the Great Sand Dunes National Park to the north and Mt. Blanca to the east. Camping is by permit, so stop anywhere you can get a Colorado hunting or fishing license and get a State wildlife area permit, they're $43 per person, but if you're age 18-64 you're required to have an SWA permit to camp in Colorado State wildlife areas. The permit is good from April 1st through March 31st of each year, and yes they are yearly permits, so try to get them in April. The campground has electric hookups, but no water. So pack in your water, vault toilets on loops B and C, RV dump station, and dumpster at exit of campground areas. You can stay 14 days every 45 days. Zapata falls nearby is a MUST visit and there is a pay to camp campground there. Cell service is spotty for Verizon, not sure about other carriers.

    Woods & River RV Park

Beautiful setting on Rio Grande River with walking trails and large RV spot

WE LOVED OUR TRIP TO THIS RV PARK.  NESTLED ON THE RIO GRANDE RIVER AND PLENTY OF LARGE COTTONWOOD TREES PROVIDING SHADE AND A REPRIEVE FROM THE WARM AFTERNOON SUN.  LESS THAN ONE MILE FROM DEL NORTE WITH SHOPS AND DELICIOUS MICRO BREWERY AND MICRO BAKERY (WHICH OPENED THE DAY WE ARRIVED).  HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS FOR FAMILIES AND PETS.

PLAYGROUND FOR KIDS HAS A FUN ZIPLINE AND LOTS OF TRAILS TO WALK THE DOGS.

Guide to Alamosa

Sacred White Shell Mountain offers dispersed camping opportunities 20-25 minutes from Great Sand Dunes National Park. This free BLM camping area sits at approximately 7,500 feet elevation in the San Luis Valley, which experiences temperature fluctuations of 30-40 degrees between day and night. Campsites have fire rings on dirt and sand surfaces, with the road condition deteriorating beyond the first few pull-out areas.

What to do

Visit Zapata Falls: 2-mile roundtrip hike from Zapata Falls Campground: "We visited the falls just a few days ago and it is so worth the trip. Use caution on the road up to the falls as it is extremely rough" (Jacob K.). The falls form spectacular ice sheets in winter.

Sand sledding at Great Sand Dunes: Rent equipment before entering park at Great Sand Dunes Oasis: "You can rent sand boards and sleds here if the weather is right. There is also a restaurant with food that was better than we expected it to be and a gas station" (Myndi C.). Rentals cost approximately $20 for a full day.

Stargazing: Best between new and quarter moon phases when camping at Sacred White Shell Mountain: "Dark skies there. You can see the Milky Way with the naked eye" (Meandering Life). The San Luis Valley has minimal light pollution, creating optimal night sky viewing.

What campers like

Easy access to multiple attractions: 30-minute radius from Mosca Campground: "We came and camped here for the crane festival. We absolutely loved the state park's diverse ecosystems and camping here" (Amber A.). The campground provides views of the lake, dunes, and mountains from most sites.

Free electrical hookups: Required permit only at Mosca Campground: "The shelters and fire pits are nothing compared to the free electric hookup. Every person 16 and over must have an SWA pass. Which you can get online at the entrance" (Patti T.). The $10 per person SWA pass is significantly cheaper than most electric hookup campsites.

Hot springs access: Natural geothermal water at Sand Dunes Recreation: "Great RV park in east walking distance to DT Alamosa. We walked to coffee place in the mornings and farmers market Saturday" (sheryl). The site features both family-friendly outdoor pools and adult-only indoor soaking areas.

What you should know

Weather changes rapidly: Strong winds and temperature fluctuations occur year-round in the San Luis Valley. "We had snow and sunshine within a couple of hours" (Ursula) at Zapata Falls Campground, which sits at higher elevation than Alamosa.

High desert environment: Bring adequate water supplies when camping at Sacred White Shell Mountain: "No amenities so be prepared. Any vehicle should make it to the first handful of spots but to go further up the mountain to the more remote locations I recommend a 4x4 as it gets very bumpy on the road up!" (cheryl).

Mosquito populations peak mid-summer: Bring effective repellent when camping June-August. "It was mosquito madness. Honestly I am from the country and can deal with bugs, but being dived bombed by 30 mosquitos (not exaggerating) is intense" noted one camper about the dunes area.

Tips for camping with families

Child-friendly amenities: Look for sites with dedicated play spaces like Cool Sunshine RV Park: "Clean facilities including small workout room and play area complete with outdoor games. Shirley is so sweet" (Samuel JW H.). Located in downtown Alamosa, this provides convenient access to town services.

Off-season flexibility: Consider visiting in spring or fall for less crowded experiences. "We stayed one night to explore the area and do some stargazing at Great Sand Dunes and visit Zapota Falls. Bathrooms were very clean, staff was friendly, and they have wifi" (Nicole C.) about Alamosa KOA.

Bring shade structures: Many sites lack natural shade. "Stayed at this campground 2 nights - the view, the sunset, San Louis Valley. The Great Sand Dunes National Park was overcrowded" (Ursula). Setup portable canopies at exposed sites to protect from intense sun, especially from 10am-2pm.

Tips from RVers

Size-appropriate site selection: Choose based on your specific rig length. "The sites in the 60's are on the west end of the loop and have fantastic views of the dunes with all the color variations as the sun moves... Some sites are only tent-friendly with parking parallel to the sight and then walking up to a tent area. Other spots work for smaller vans, trailers, etc." (Judy B.) about Piñon Flats Campground.

Water temperature considerations: Some sites have geothermal water systems. "One funny thing is if you have an rv and hook up to the water, it is fed from the hot springs so the water is always very warm. Didn't get to test out our hot water heater at this location!" (Heidi S.) about Sand Dunes Recreation.

Road access planning: Plan arrival before dark at dispersed sites. "Smooth dirt road with large spots and smaller spots right off the road. Perfect for when all the other nearby campgrounds are full, but make sure you get there before sunset because it will fill up" (Inka K.) about Sacred White Shell Mountain.
