Best Campgrounds near Washington, AR

The Washington, Arkansas area contains several camping options within an hour's drive, offering RV sites, tent camping, and dispersed locations primarily around Millwood Lake. Millwood State Park Campground and Beard's Bluff Recreation Area provide established camping experiences with lake access, while Bois D'Arce Lake Peninsula offers more primitive dispersed camping opportunities without developed facilities. Most campgrounds in the region feature water and electric hookups for RV campers, with some locations like Cottonshed Park and Beard's Bluff providing waterfront sites with scenic views.

Reservations are required at several established campgrounds in the region, particularly during peak summer months when water recreation is popular. Many campgrounds operate seasonally, with some closing between November and March. Road access varies significantly between developed parks with paved roads and dispersed areas that may require higher clearance vehicles. The terrain around Washington is relatively flat with hardwood forests and lake landscapes dominating the camping experience. Cell service is generally available at established campgrounds but may be spotty at more remote sites. As one visitor noted about Beard's Bluff, "The road in heads down into the campground and it is a very good paved road. There are several sites on the water. Grab a spot and spend a couple of weeks enjoying life."

Waterfront camping represents the primary draw for visitors to the region, with Millwood Lake sites receiving consistently high ratings for scenery and fishing access. Several campgrounds feature playground facilities and boat launches, making them suitable for family camping trips. Campers report that sites are typically well-spaced with ample shade from mature hardwood forests. A visitor to Bois D'Arce Lake Peninsula commented, "Easy to get to and great spots on the lake!" While most developed campgrounds offer clean facilities with showers and restrooms, visitors to dispersed sites should prepare for more primitive conditions. Wildlife viewing, particularly bird watching, is frequently mentioned in reviews of campgrounds around Millwood Lake, though campers should be aware that alligators are present in some areas.

    Rocky Point(wright Patman Dam)

    Beautiful

We just did an overnighter here but if we're ever in the area again I'd stay. Lots of great waterfront sites, looks like a fisherman's paradise.

    Bois D'Arc Lake Wildlife Area

    Quiet spot on lake

This is a great spot! I stayed at the end near the boat dock and was surrounded on three sides by water. I awoke to the sound of waterfowl and enjoyed coffee in the lake breeze. There was another camper a good distance away.

    Clear Spring

    Excellent Corps of Engineers campground

This campground is exceptionally well managed. The facilities are basic, with bathhouses throughout, centrally located dumpsters, walking trails, and grounds workers constantly working.

The location on Wright Patman lake is awesome. Many of the sites are lakefront, others are in shaded loops within a 2 min walk of the lake shore.

The campground is an easy 15-20 minute drive from Texarkana and there are stores and restaurants closer than that.

DeGray Lake Resort State Park — De Gray State Park

    Very quiet and secluded CG

We have a 36 ft Class A with a Cherokee Trailhawk tow and stayed in site 12 for 1 night in mid September. The CG is clean and well maintained but showing its age. The CG roads are paved, but narrow, winding, and fairly bumpy in spots. Few if any of the sites in this section of the CG were anywhere close to level and our site, one of the few pull-throughs, was one of the worst, I mean seriously sloped even after ratcheting up the front levelers as far as they’d go. The CG is very quiet and peaceful. There was only one other camper in this section of the CG while we were there.

AT&T coverage was basically nonexistent with 1 bar of LTE service but very little if any throughput. The CG is heavily wooded, so Starlink was unusable.

Crater of Diamonds State Park Campground

    Diamond Mining Fun

What a lovely state park campground. Sites are just close enough not to be crowded. Facilities on site were clean and well maintained. Nice to have a hot shower after mining for diamonds. Will make note that best time to come is October-November. Visitor center was somewhat dated, would have thought they would have basic food stuff and more camper supplies. Other than that it was a nice place and we will come again!

PS if you have a dog who likes to dig this is a nice place for them to help you dig.

Crater of Diamonds State Park Campground

    5star campground 4star site

I’ve reviewed the campground before, for other sites. Most are level and plenty of room/parking length. This site 30 is cramped and has a passenger side tilt to it. I have a 26’ (tip to tail) TT and a crew cab pickup… they will not fit in the campsite end to end, much less with some room to get in to the tailgate. Once unhooked, I had to angle the truck in to overlap the tongue of the TT. Ended up with a 3 inch riser to level the trailer side to side, which puts the first step about 17 inches up. To add to it, there is no level surface much further than the step before the site slopes off steeply with pine needles. The site just seems like the Park wanted to jam another spot in to make 45$ extra a night on busy times. I would not recommend site 30, to anyone. Tent campers would be even worse off, as the tent pad area is back closer to the road.

    Big Fir Primitive Camping

    Super beautiful but packed

We were excited to finally find a free camp area for our RV and drove into the wild for this one but when we arrived there were lots of people camping out with little space or privacy. Guess it depends on the season. But super beautiful forest and lake!!
