Camping options around Oark, Arkansas range from developed campgrounds with amenities to primitive sites within the Ozark National Forest. This region sits at elevations between 800-2,500 feet with temperatures averaging 85°F in summer and 45°F in winter. Most campgrounds experience moderate rainfall year-round, with spring and fall offering the most comfortable camping conditions.
What to do
Hiking to waterfalls: Haw Creek Falls Recreation Area offers access to multiple waterfalls within short hiking distance. "There are several waterfalls in the area to explore. Drive-up, fire-ring, hook, bench, pit toilet. Hammocks are allowed if you choose," notes Josh B.
Swimming in natural pools: Steel Creek Campground provides direct river access for cooling off. "Swimming area is fantastic, a much needed relief after a hot day of hiking! Something really important to note though is that there is NO WATER!! Bring your own water in to avoid making a half an hour trip to the nearest gas station!!" advises Samantha W.
Scenic driving tours: Take forest roads through the mountains for panoramic views. "The drive up to this campsite was a slight challenge. I would recommend an SUV or other tall vehicle with 4 wheel drive. The twisty, steep, narrow dirt road makes for quite an adventure," shares Clarissa F. about the route to White Rock Mountain Recreation Area.
What campers like
Riverside camping locations: Redding Campground offers sites near the Mulberry River. "This place is beautiful! Nicely spaced spots, very nice swimming hole. Only downside was the upkeep could be better. I will camp here again," reports Scott G.
Mountain viewpoints: Morgan Mountain Road dispersed sites provide elevated perspectives. "Large dispersed site with a view, especially in the winter, of the mountains to the west. Located along Morgan Mountain Road, Forest Road 1504, a little over a mile north of AR Hwy 215," explains Fred S.
Wildlife encounters: Early mornings and evenings offer wildlife viewing opportunities. "We saw a lot of deer in the forest right next to our site and in the field next over," mentions Samantha W. about her stay at Steel Creek Campground.
What you should know
Road conditions: Many camping areas require careful driving on unpaved roads. "Altough eroded in spots due to recent heavy rains, Morgan Mountain Road was in good condition - no obstacles. A 2wd passenger car can carefully make it over the eroded areas," advises Fred S.
Limited services: Most forest campgrounds have minimal facilities. "Fun campground, not exactly remote but private enough. $10/night, which is more than fair considering the size of most of the sites," notes Samantha W.
Seasonal challenges: Kings River Falls Campground experiences fluctuating water levels. "Not much water right now on the river but will be back in the spring!" notes rachael S.
Tips for camping with families
Safe swimming areas: Look for shallow entry points along rivers. "The kids can explore off-leash in less trafficked areas but should be controlled near other campers or when ATVs pass by," recommends a regular visitor to the area.
Kid-friendly amenities: Aux Arc campground offers spacious sites for families. "The campground is clean and the views are good. It is by the Arkansas river, near a hydroelectric dam. You will see barges going down the river, and see the railroad that sits across the river," explains Jason K.
Pet-friendly activities: Many trails accommodate leashed dogs. "We had campsite #5 and loved how much room we had! You are close enough to see your neighbor campers but we couldn't hear them at all. We had 2 dogs that loved the space too," shares rachael S. about Kings River Falls Campground.
Tips from RVers
Site selection: Choose level spots with adequate clearance. "Site 16 appears to be the only site here suitable for 5th wheels, and its appeared to be a tight squeeze to back in. No hookups at any site," cautions Melanie G. about Redding Campground.
Hookup availability: Mulberry Mountain Lodging & Events offers full hookups for larger rigs. "Sites were spacious and restrooms were very clean! ATV trails were great! Beautiful views..we will definitely go back," comments Andrea H.
Accessibility considerations: Some areas require advanced driving skills. "Beware of flooding during the rainy seasons. When it rains a lot, the creek floods and covers the road into the campground," warns Lacee G.
