Best Dog-Friendly Camping near Fort Huachuca, AZ

Apache Flats RV Resort welcomes pets at its concrete pad sites with shade trees near Fort Huachuca. Multiple pet-friendly campgrounds in the area provide accommodations for travelers with dogs, including Lakeview Campground, Tombstone RV & Campground, and Mountain Vista Mobile Home & RV Park. Most campgrounds require pets to be leashed and under control at all times, with owners responsible for waste cleanup. The staff at Apache Flats is particularly helpful and friendly to guests with pets. Sites typically include full hookups for RVs with concrete pads, picnic tables, and trash service. Several campgrounds offer fenced areas where dogs can exercise off-leash. Camping options range from primitive tent sites to full-service RV resorts with 50-amp electrical service, sewer, and water hookups.

The surrounding Coronado National Forest provides numerous pet-friendly hiking trails, including paths at Scotia Canyon where many campers bring their dogs on yearly visits. Parker Canyon Lake offers water access for dogs who enjoy swimming, though owners should watch for wildlife including javelina and rattlesnakes when hiking with pets. The 5-mile road to Reef Townsite Campground can be challenging but rewards visitors with pine forest camping and interpretive trails suitable for leashed dogs. Temperatures in the region vary significantly with elevation and season, requiring pet owners to monitor for heat stress during summer months. Most campgrounds have nearby vault toilets but limited water sources, so carrying extra water for pets is essential. The area's dispersed camping options like Miller Canyon Road provide more secluded experiences for campers with dogs who prefer privacy.

    Bisbee RV Park

    Quiet and secure

Tranquil place for people and pets. Facilities, including dog park is clean and community if friendly. No worries except for no campfires and the nightly visits from javelinas. 😊

    Nice big lots!

Off the beaten trail a bit but we really enjoyed our stay here. Hiking trail entrances right in the park and it’s close to the San Pedro river.

There is a laundry/mail room with a restroom and then a separate bathhouse near the front. Nice little dog park for our pooch to run around too and we used the public firepit.

Kiddos said there were horseshoes to play.

    Tombstone RV Park

    Awesome

My brother pulled into Tombstone AZ Brite and early walked around found a flyer for this park and called. No problem Dawn said see you when you get here. Dawn and Scott were the only two staff I dealt with but they were so friendly. I loved the on site laundry, heated pool, and two dog parks. If you're ever doing Historic Tombstone check this place out it's great.

    Tombstone RV & Campground

    Beautiful and clean, perfect location

Upon arrival, this park is absolutely gorgeous. Check-in was swift and easy, and we were escorted to our site by a friendly staff member. Although the park is big rig friendly, we found the turn into the row very tight for our 37ft 5th wheel and long tow vehicle (about 55ft total rig length). Once in the proper row, the turn into the pull through sites is easy.

Full hookups were all working smoothly, and although we did not use any of the facilities, they all looked beautiful and clean. The dog park on the far end was absolutely spotless. The lighting around the campground at night was charming and appreciated. Our site had a tree with a picnic table under it.

We were only a few minutes drive away from all the best attractions Tombstone has to offer, but the location is quiet and away from all the commotion.

    Tombstone Territories RV Park

This was a great place to spend the winter

We spent 4 months here over the winter months. Big spacious pull thru spots and very clean and well maintained. Clubhouse and pool were closed due to Covid over reaction, and the price was still the same without those amenities.

Park is out away from civilization, with a lot of hiking /biking trails. Laundry was acceptable but not exceptional. Several machines were out of order at any given time. At the end of the winter the work campers that did such a great job all left to go north and the services all but disappeared. The park almost completely emptied out by the 1st of May.

There was a nice little dog park that that actually had some nice grass that our dog definitely enjoyed.

The water pressure on the West end of the park was terrible at times but over all a great place to spend the winter.

Guide to Fort Huachuca

Fort Huachuca's military reservation sits at elevations ranging from 4,600-5,500 feet in southeastern Arizona, creating a varied camping climate. The surrounding Huachuca Mountains reach over 9,000 feet, offering distinctive camping opportunities with significant temperature variations between seasons. Winter nights frequently drop below freezing at higher elevations while summer days can exceed 100°F in lower areas.

What to Do

Wildlife viewing at Parker Canyon Lake: Visit Lakeview Campground where campers can fish the well-stocked lake and observe diverse wildlife. "The fishing was excellent — the lake is well-stocked, and it's a peaceful spot to cast a line. Many of the tent sites have trails that lead directly down to the lake, which makes it super convenient if you're fishing," notes Pedro G., who particularly appreciated the spaciousness of the campground.

Historical exploration: The Reef Townsite Group Area offers interpretive trails explaining the area's mining past. "Loop trail with interpretative signs tell the story of the area's short-lived mining operations. Across the road find the Old Sawmill Spring Trail 3/4 mile up to a spring before the intersection of Carr Peak Trail," reports Jane J., who found the road accessible despite its reputation.

Off-grid desert experience: Travel the back roads to explore the grasslands. "Empire Ranch has a great but small museum, with trails around it for walking, nice restrooms, free water for filling your RV, and a rich history," shares Michael R. about the Cieneguita Dispersed Camping Area, noting that "night time stars are brilliant" due to minimal light pollution.

What Campers Like

Budget-friendly options: Many travelers appreciate the affordability of camping options around Fort Huachuca. Quail Ridge RV Resort offers remarkable value according to Daniel A., who noted, "Spacious, level lots. Friendly, helpful staff. Close to the highway but not too noisy. The campground is clean and well maintained. Very affordable!"

Clean facilities: Tombstone RV & Campground maintains high standards for their amenities. "Clean park, level and clean gravel sites. About 5 minutes from the town of Tombstone," writes Jose J., who visited during freezing November temperatures and appreciated the option to "rent an outdoor fireplace and buy firewood on site."

Secluded camping spots: For those seeking isolation, the conservation areas offer space. "We camped just past the cieneguita sites tucked back in the mesquite thicket. Super quiet otherwise and great skies without light pollution for looking at stars," Rachelle J. explains about her experience at the dispersed sites, noting that "it's camping" regarding the fine dust that covered their gear.

What You Should Know

Road conditions vary significantly: Access to some campgrounds requires careful planning. Jane J. notes about the Reef Townsite Campground, "The 5-mike road up was in good condition -- my Dodge Caravan handled it slow-but-sure. However, rain / snow could quickly change the road."

Water availability is limited: At Mountain View RV Park, Joel R. explains the basics: "This park has 72 pull through sites, water, 30/50 amp electric, and sewer. Monthly sites charge extra for electricity. There are 2 bathrooms/showers which are passable." Planning for water needs is essential at primitive sites.

Wildlife encounters are common: "We had an influx of skunks while enjoying our nightly fire! There were about five of them all invading our area and we were all on the picnic table trying to be as still and as quiet as we could," Molly G. shares about Lakeview Campground. The area hosts diverse wildlife including cows, javelina, and various bird species.

Tips for Camping with Families

Family-focused campgrounds: Lakeview Campground receives consistent praise from families. "We regularly camp here with our cub scout pack and their families. Nice and well maintained sites, accessible bathrooms, and great rangers," reports C B., highlighting the kid-friendly atmosphere.

Recreational activities for children: Joseph K. recommends, "This is a great campsite for tent or campers. It has great access to the lake and the fish are almost always biting. Bring the kids bikes so they can explore a bit and enjoy the sunsets." Families particularly value campgrounds with space for children to play safely.

Dog friendly campgrounds near Fort Huachuca: When traveling with both children and pets, Stacey M. recommends Apache Flats RV Resort: "The spaces are large concrete slabs with shade trees. I would absolutely come back!" For military families, this on-base option provides convenience and security.

Tips from RVers

RV site considerations: Big rig owners should note accessibility challenges. Christina H. shares about Tombstone RV Campground: "Although the park is big rig friendly, we found the turn into the row very tight for our 37ft 5th wheel and long tow vehicle (about 55ft total rig length). Once in the proper row, the turn into the pull through sites is easy."

Seasonal timing matters: Michael K. advises about Lakeview Campground, "In the RV area, the spots are paved and there are no hook ups. Water is available and the restrooms were clean. This place is first come only. No reservations. It can fill up in the nice weather months. We were just there midweek in the middle of July and it was almost empty."

Laundry and amenities: For longer stays, Toree M. appreciates Mountain View RV Park's practical amenities: "Clean, easy to locate, and great for the price! Laundry, bathroom, and showers. Easy to maneuver our 34 footer here. There's a little dog park area and two dumpsters!"
