      Quiet stay

Quiet place to stay minus the planes taking off randomly. Loved not having service. And loved the waterfall in the campground

      Great for location

Tent camping review. Being in the middle of a small city, this place was great. It's proximity to everything was extremely convenient. The tent sites aren't huge but there's plenty of privacy between them (I can't remember what site we picked but we were in shoulder season and the only ones there). The showers were hot and bathrooms were clean. Available coin laundry is also a bonus (even though we didn't need to use them). I believe the sites usually have a fire ring and picnic table but we were there when they were getting ready to close. The campground owner did warn us of a black bear that had been wandering around the campground. There was scat and we did hear him one night but didn't have any problems sharing the space with him.

Beautiful views and never to crowded

Clean bathrooms and views are amazing. Close to some really cool hikes and just 30-40 feet from the ocean.

      Centrally Located

Bear Paw is located in downtown Valdez and is smack dab in the middle of the touristy shops and restaurants. It's clean, staff is courteous, and spots are okay (not the roomiest). If you are going on a fishing trip it might be a good choice as you can walk across the street to the docks. If you are looking for a more nature based campground, try Allison Point or the campground on Airport Road.

      Perfect Location

Facing duck flats, watching bald eagles. Walkable grocery, restaurants, liquor, cannabis. Great bike paths. Saw bear feeding from bike path, accessible from campground (along the Richardson highway, not IN the camp area)

Road has been closed since 2011

This campground is inaccessible by road since 2011.  Not sure when this was written but should be updated with the herculean efforts necessary to get there.  The campground is open, but only if you can get there.

You get what you pay for

The price of $44 for a non-hookup tent site had us apprehensive at first, but after one night at a not so great site down the road we decided to give it a try and we were overall impressed. The campground WiFi was top notch, the showers were free with your stay and were clean with hot water, there’s laundry on site (takes quarters, $3 for wash, 2 for dry). Overall a very pleasant stay.

Right by the small boat harbor/ middle of the action

The location is unbeatable. You are right by the harbor and walking distance to shops/ restaurants. Down side is you’re right in the middle of everything so it’s more of a parking lot than a scenic spot. Spots were a little tight and you can hear your neighbors conversations. There are no fire rings and we don’t think campfire is allowed. But bathrooms are clean. The harbor is beautiful. Stay here if you want to be centrally located.

      Very nice woodsy spot!

Valdez KOA has super friendly staff and they’ve gone above and beyond to make accommodations for our party which includes an rv family and a cabin family. Very pretty spot with some space to walk the dogs and a fantastic bike/walking trail (also very helpful with walking dogs). We’ve seen plenty of bears (black mostly and one grizzly on a hike). You do need a car to get to Valdez or to some of the waterfalls/hiking as the campground is about 8 miles outside of town.

Sleep soundly nestled up in the alpine

Perfect spot to stretch stiff legs up in Thomson’s pass. There is a great loop trail less than 3 miles if you are just passing through.

Due to covid no host, no services including cell phone service.

This area tends to get “socked” in so be prepared to be one with the clouds. If driving drive slow lots of twists, don’t use your brights it will be harder to see.

Staff treats you like family.....maybe better!

We were there two days the end of May 2021. We had reservations and arrived after hours. We had an issue connecting properly to the water. I alerted management(Lori) via text. She responded with urgency and quickly solved the issue and compensated us for our trouble. Quite frankly, I was taken aback by how concerned she was with making sure we left feeling great about our stay there. Oh, and the bathrooms and showers are CLEAN! Thanks so much, Lori and KOA staff.

      Adult Tenting

Awesome tenting area! Lots of shaded spots by the road, but if you’re willing to walk in, the spots on the hill are fantastic! I had the entire hill to myself and took the spot at the very top which had great views of town and the sea. All the walk-in spots have picnic tables, fire rings, and tent pads. Adult only area has its own bathrooms with free showers. Laundry is $3 each to wash and dry and is also on site. The bunnies are just the icing on the cake. Great tent camping!

      Worth the $$

From a previous scouting trip my parents stayed here one night and LOVED it.  We recommend that they stay in a parking lot area after our Bugpocalypse a few weeks prior.  They reported no bugs here.  The spot was reserved it in advance and the reservation requests the side the RVs slides are on.  You are greeted by a golf cart on arrival they show you to your spot and directed you in so that they would have no issues using their slides.  The views of Valdez are amazing no matter where you go.  There is a tent area in the center and this park is close to everything.   These are full hook ups and if you remember a cable you can get cable TV too.  There is a huge area to walk your furry travel buddies as well.  If you are staying Valdez this is an excellent choice.   Cell Service: Yes Internet: Yes 2020 Cost: $41-$61 RVs Distance from Anchorage: 308 miles Bug Factor (1 minimal to 10 too many to enjoy): 1

      Great Campground

Great campground and will be going back the next time I am in Valdez. Buildings are kept very clean and supplies always filled. Stayed at a tent site and enjoyed being able to set up under the trees. Not a lot of noise at the site even when the kids were playing on the playground. Also an area for dogs to run around is nice.

      Bring a table and chairs

You can see Valdez across the water from this campground. There are fire pits for each spot but no tables so you will need to bring your own.

There is cell phone service here as well as internet. There are 49 spots and they are located on both sides of the road so if you can’t find your spot go back down and look on the other side of the road.

That strange noise is the highway

We heard strange noises during the day and it turns out the highway wraps around this campsite. It was so well designed you would never even know it except the strange sounds bouncing off the mountains.

Bathrooms were exceptional and there were hiking trails. Great place to take a raft or kayak. You could not beat the views. Bring an extra blanket since it gets chilly at the higher elevation.

Spots were full and there were only 2 first come first served sites so be sure to go online to reserve one. Totally worth it.

      Previously Bear Creek

Remember there are two seasons in Alaska. Winter and construction. Plan for extra travel time.

Amazing views. Better than the parking lot RV parks in town. Well maintained and centrally located. If you are looking for hook ups this is the place to go. Camp in the wilderness but still get your emails.

So close to so many side trips. Bridal falls, Robe lake, Solomon Gulch hatchery, and so many others.

      Overgrown but has showers

With sun all day and night it is very hard to keep the wilderness from taking back spaces. The spots were big but the mosquitoes were terrible. Camping here early on the season would have been better.

Great bathroom/shower facility. Waterfall on the campground across from the trash dump. Prices are the same as state camping so you might as well get a shower and flush toilet out of it. Close drive to Glacier View Park.

      Right on the water

Location, location, location. This campground is situated right on the water. If you are going to stay in a campground in town then you could give this one a try. It was a little more buggy than the other two parking lot ones.

Make sure to stop at the visitor center on the way in right before the campground. There is a quick hike to a waterfall just behind it.

      No bugs

This is a parking lot and the spots are tight. However the city is set in such a beautiful place it’s hard to complain.

Close to all the amenities you could want. Make sure to enjoy the waterfalls on the way in.

      Yes it’s a parking lot

Right across the street is Latte Dah Espresso and this is very close to hiking trails and all the other items you forgot to bring with you. Like nail clippers.

I usually give parking lots 3 stars but honestly if you go at the end of June there are A LOT of bugs at the well trees campgrounds. So this was a plus in my book.

Right down the street from the overlook trail. It’s worth a quick walk UP those stairs.

      Wished I was tent camping

This is an amazing place especially if you are tent camping. The other spots close by are parking lots or overgrown buggy areas. Close to hiking trails I would try this spot before any others.
