    Tolsona Wilderness Campground

    Great spot

In the middle of nowhere but still close enough to run to Glennallen. If you are camping anywhere between Lake Louise and Copper Center this is a great stop. I would recommend more than a single over night here.

If you don’t have a jacket the nice people there will sell you a hoodie. If you are staying in the area this is a great spot.

    Showers!

I’m not sure if it was the free hot shower, the free coffee in the morning, or the sound of sleeping by running water that sold me. Nice stop on the way to Wrangel and great hosts!

    Right on the river

Well maintained campground. Kind of like a folk festival. Very friendly staff. If you are looking for a great place to camp here it is.

Call and make reservations! 907-822-3991 or kscharters@gmail.com

Prices are a little high for tent camping but pretty standard for RVs. Pets are welcome but drive slowly. Not a ton of room between spots.

    Tolsona Wilderness Campground

    Don't believe the pictures

Dirty, upkept , clutter.  Water is super cold,  no one was tubing.  The pictures must be old, because this campground is in bad shape.  No one is watching their children or pets.  My site  had hanging branches and the squirrels where everywhere.  The trash was open which I'm sure did not help

    Liberty Falls State Recreation Site

    Wonderful as always!

I've reviewed this campground before but found some more information about it. It costs $20 to camp here per the listing in the Milepost. I was here in May and they weren't ready for the summer camping season. No pricing was posted but the honor box is still available right when you drive in. Only one pit toilet was open in the off season and the water was locked. Bear proof trash recepticals are still available. There are 6 campsites with fire rings and picnic tables. 4 of the campsites have tent pads. There are also lots of trees where you could hang a hammock! Cell reception was spotty here.

    Tolsona Wilderness Campground

Not Your Typical Alaskan RV Park!

This is not your typical Alaskan RV park! Sites are large, spread out and private. Each has a fire ring and a picnic table. All are creekside.

The owners maintain a camp store with basic necessities and also plan weekend activities and games for kids. Near the camp store are handicap accessible sites, bathrooms, private showers and laundry.

Near the entrance to the campground is the trailhead to the Tolsona Mud Volcanoes. The trail is usually pretty swampy, so be sure to wear tall boots and dress appropriately for the weather. Trail is 2-2.5mi round trip.

Guide to Copper Center

Glamping options near Copper Center, Alaska focus on riverfront experiences with varying levels of amenity access. Located in the Copper River Valley at approximately 1,000 feet elevation, this region experiences relatively mild summer temperatures with highs typically in the 60s and occasional rainfall. Winter temperatures can drop well below zero for those considering cold-weather camping adventures.

What to do

Fishing for salmon: Liberty Falls State Recreation Site provides excellent fishing opportunities with a waterfall backdrop. "Although this campground is just off the road system, the roads in Alaska can always use some work. Take your time and enjoy the drive but make sure you're prepared - stores and gas are few in far between once you get back into this terrain," notes Sierra S. at Liberty Falls State Recreation Site.

Waterfall exploration: Visit the thundering falls at Liberty Falls for photography and water activities. "This is one of the most beautiful waterfalls I've seen in Alaska," reports Sierra S. Another camper adds, "There is a great place to splash in the water at the base of this waterfall. This is one of those once in a life time spots."

Creek tubing: While creek activities are available at several sites, water temperature varies significantly. At Tolsona Wilderness Campground, a recent visitor reported, "Water is super cold, no one was tubing," suggesting seasonal timing matters for water activities.

What campers like

Privacy between sites: Sourdough Creek Campground offers well-spaced sites away from neighbors. "Quite private space not on top of your neighbors. Walk in sites and ADA sites and walking tails though out camp ground. No cellphone signal so you can really be in touch with nature," reports Melissa F. at Sourdough Creek Campground.

Community atmosphere: The fishing community at Klutina Salmon Charters & Campground creates a supportive environment for newcomers. Jessica J. observed, "The people working, visiting and in the area were all great. Very respectful of each other, helping newer fishers with techniques and how to tips."

Natural soundscape: Many campers mention the soothing sounds of moving water. At Liberty Falls, one camper noted it's "Perfect for those who like to sleep next to running water," while another described it as a "Really nice spot to listen to green noises."

What you should know

Limited availability: Several campgrounds have very few sites and fill quickly. "Cannot reserve. Get there early in the week and stay the weekend. This campground only has 10 spots but is worth it," advises Tanya B. about Liberty Falls. Similarly, Shadara W. notes, "Gorgeous waterfall but very limited camping spots, about 5 in all with a couple walk in tent sites."

Campground conditions vary: Recent reviews suggest inconsistent maintenance at some locations. "Bathrooms haven't seen a cleaning this season, if they even got one last year. Nothing is labeled, hard to find sites," reported one visitor to Tolsona in 2022.

Seasonal readiness: Early season visitors should verify facility status. "I was here in May and they weren't ready for the summer camping season. No pricing was posted but the honor box is still available right when you drive in. Only one pit toilet was open in the off season and the water was locked," reports Hannah C. about Liberty Falls State Recreation Site.

Tips for camping with families

Kid-friendly activities: Some campgrounds organize activities specifically for children. "The owners maintain a camp store with basic necessities and also plan weekend activities and games for kids," mentions Erika D. about Tolsona Wilderness Campground.

Spacious sites for play: Liberty Falls offers room for families to spread out. "10 sites and one bathroom. Three of the sites are private. At least three of them can be an RV site. Great for community camping ⛺️," notes Melissa F.

Safety considerations: Wildlife awareness is essential with children. At Tolsona, one camper mentioned, "The squirrels where everywhere," while another noted bear-proof trash receptacles are available at Liberty Falls, highlighting the importance of proper food storage.

Tips from RVers

Site limitations: Many campgrounds have size restrictions for larger vehicles. At Liberty Falls State Recreation Site, Shadara W. notes there are "Mostly tent sites only one or two sites big enough for an RV," making advance planning crucial for RV travelers.

Road conditions: Construction can affect accessibility. "This summer there was a lot of construction on the high way, you have to wait for a 'pilot' car going the direction you want then you follow the heard," reports SJ D. about access to Sourdough Creek Campground.

Campground navigation: Some RVers report difficulty finding their sites. "Nothing is labeled, hard to find sites," reported one Tolsona visitor, suggesting first-time visitors arrive during daylight hours for easier orientation.
