Surrounded by glacial terrain in southeastern Wisconsin, Williams Bay sits in the heart of the Kettle Moraine region at an elevation of approximately 900 feet. The area features a mix of woodlands, prairies and kettle lakes formed during the last ice age. Summer temperatures range from 65-85°F from June through August, making it ideal for yurt camping and other glamping experiences.
What to do
Hiking in Kettle Moraine: Follow the Ice Age Trail sections in the southern unit where Ottawa Lake Campground offers access to numerous trails. "The campground was close to our intended hiking trail — the Scuppernong section of the Ice Age Trail. It's absolutely gorgeous and will be why we come back again," notes Linda N.
Kayaking Turtle Lake: Rent watercraft or bring your own to explore the calm waters near Snug Harbor Inn Campground. "They have on site bathrooms and showers. Electric, water and sewer hookups. They also have tent sites. This season there will be new owners so I hope they keep some of the annual activities," shares Kevin C.
Lake Geneva swimming: Access the lake via Big Foot Beach State Park Campground where visitors can cool off during summer months. A reviewer mentions, "Clean sites, Lake Geneva swimming, friendly staff not far from Lake Geneva and stores for food and supplies the fall is beautiful and less crowded."
What campers like
Privacy between sites: Many campers appreciate the secluded feeling at Thomas Woods Campground where sites are thoughtfully spaced. "I stayed in one of the tent camping sites with a little walk up. Nobody else was camping within sight of me, which was nice, though 2 other sites were visible from mine," says Emily H.
Yurt camping options: Williams Bay area offers several yurt camping experiences with varying amenities. Chicago Northwest KOA provides alternative accommodations for those wanting a glamping experience. As one camper notes, "Plenty for the little kids to do, and the text message communication was great with regards to weather updates or any goings on around the campground."
Well-maintained facilities: Cleanliness remains a priority at campgrounds throughout the Williams Bay region. At Fox Den Campground, campers enjoy reliable amenities. "Fox Den is superior to Honeysuckle Hollows because each site has an individual electric post. Sites in Honeysuckle have electric posts too far from parking pad. Fox Den also has more space between sites, more level pads and each site is tucked away with trees."
What you should know
Seasonal considerations: Most campgrounds operate from April through October with peak season from Memorial Day to Labor Day. "Busiest days are after Memorial Day weekend and to Labor Day weekend," notes a camper about the Kettle Moraine area.
Reservation requirements: Popular sites fill quickly, especially those with yurts or glamping accommodations. Weekend bookings should be made well in advance, particularly for electric sites.
Wildlife awareness: Local wildlife includes raccoons and ticks that require proper precautions. A visitor at Honeysuckle Hollow Campground warns, "SO many ticks. With a baby crawling that needed to be set free, we were constantly doing checks...they literally fall out of the trees into people!"
Water quality varies: Some lakes experience periodic closures due to bacteria levels. "The lake is great for swimming, though they do have e coli warnings frequently in the heat of summer," shares one visitor about Ottawa Lake.
Tips for camping with families
Lakefront activities: Multiple lakes provide water recreation opportunities for children. "The water was very clear and you could see the fish swim by. This loop is best for tent camping. The other loops are basically all RVs," reports Julia B. about Turner Lake.
Playgrounds and organized events: Many campgrounds offer scheduled activities during summer months. "There are multiple playgrounds, access to launch sites for kayaks, little store to buy ice cream or snacks," mentions a Honeysuckle Hollow camper.
Budget-friendly options: State parks provide affordable camping alternatives. "These campsites are as low as $12/night!! One of my favorite spots to test new gear. Family friendly. There's some small trails around as well that are beginner," shares Addison G.
Glamping for beginners: For families new to outdoor experiences, yurt camping near Williams Bay offers a gentle introduction to nature. Amenities typically include beds, electricity, and convenient access to bathrooms.
Tips from RVers
Hookup locations: Check the specific placement of utilities before booking. "Sites in Honeysuckle have electric posts to far from parking pad. Fox Den also has more space between sites, more level pads and each site is tucked away with trees," advises one experienced camper.
Site selection strategy: Request sites away from main roads for a quieter experience. "The outer lanes had shade, while our site was in the middle open area. Easy access to electric and/or water. If unsure, contact office," suggests Dan W. about Elkhorn Campgrounds.
Leveling challenges: Some campgrounds require additional equipment for proper RV positioning. "Our site was downhill so that presented quite the challenge to level out," notes a visitor at Scenic Ridge Campground.
Dump station access: Plan for potential wait times when using sanitary services. "The dump station was near the entrance to the camping loop and had potable water. It was also very busy and we had to wait when filling up and again when dumping," shares Tina about her experience.
