Best Campgrounds near White Lake, WI

Campgrounds near White Lake, Wisconsin provide access to the Nicolet National Forest with a mix of established sites and dispersed camping options along rivers and lakes. Boulder Lake Campground offers tent and RV sites with electric hookups at select locations, while River Forest Campground and Outdoor Retreats features 50 sites with amenities including showers and a convenience store. The Oconto River area has more primitive camping opportunities with two dispersed sites located off Mountain Lake Road for those seeking a more secluded experience away from developed facilities.

Seasonal camping in this region runs primarily from May through November, with most established campgrounds closed during winter months. Roads to remote sites can be challenging, particularly for larger vehicles or after rain. "Leave the loud pets and noisy illegal motorbikes at home," noted one visitor about Boulder Lake, highlighting occasional noise issues during peak season. Access to dispersed sites along the Oconto River requires careful navigation, with one camper reporting: "4x4 recommended. 2WD truck couldn't make it easily." Campers should check ahead for current conditions as many forest roads become impassable during spring thaw or after heavy rainfall. Most established campgrounds in the area require reservations, especially for weekend stays during summer months.

Waterfront camping opportunities represent a significant draw throughout the White Lake area. The South Branch of the Oconto River provides excellent brook trout fishing according to visitor reviews, with handicap-accessible fishing platforms available at some locations. Boulder Lake offers a beach area with shallow, sandy shoreline that visitors describe as "very nice for swimming." Several reviews mention the peace and quiet of more remote sites, with one camper noting their Oconto River site had "almost absolutely silent other than the waterfall about a mile away." Forest campsites generally provide fire rings and picnic tables, though firewood availability varies by location, with some campgrounds selling it on-site while dispersed areas may have limited natural resources nearby.

    Bagley Rapids NF Campground

    Sweet Campground, Small and Quiet

Nice little campground in the Chequamegon National Forest. Cash only, FCFS. There’s not a lot of sites here, but it’s also pretty hidden away. I showed up on a Friday evening around 6:30pm and was still able to snag a spot on the river. Quite a few ticks here, make sure to bring some permethrin spray for your clothes and your dog. Tough fishing from the sites with a lot of overhanging tree cover, but there are a few fish around if you can get a cast in.

T-Mobile signal is non-existent, Verizon had 1-2 bars of LTE which was enough to send out a few texts.

    Brown County Reforestation Campground

    Road to Mackinac

Only spent 1 night but this is a beautiful campground. LOTS of birds (that's our thing!), forested, so many trails for hiking and mountain biking. Bathrooms and showers were clean, site was spacious. Hookups are available but we chose dry camping.

    Scott Lake

    Remote site on quiet lake

The campsite is on a gravel road. There is access to a small lake. Across the road is a nice boardwalk to another lake. The Wilderness Headwaters trail is also close.

    Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest Backcountry Site

    Amazing find

This is a huge campsite on a dead end road. The parking area is huge so one could fit a trailer or pop up there. There is a sandy beach on a small lake full of fish. The Sam Cambell trail is right next door, it’s a nice walk to another tiny lake.

    Wolf Lake Campsite

    Beautiful small lake

I love this campsite. The small lake belongs to a pair of loons that will share their fish and sandy beach. The parking area is adequate, I’ve seen small trailers set up here. Many hiking trails are nearby.

    On The Rocks Family Kampground

    Do not recommend

Check yourself in and don’t expect to be welcomed by staff. Restrooms are filthy. Office, restaurant and bar only open Thursday through Saturday. When we messaged to ask when the restrooms will be cleaned, it took 2 days and a phone call to respond. Of you like customer service and clean facilities, this is not for you. There are more campgrounds to choose from in the area.
