Best Campgrounds near Ona, WV

Ona, West Virginia and the surrounding area contain a range of developed campgrounds including state parks and privately managed facilities. Beech Fork State Park serves as a primary camping destination with multiple campground areas including Four Coves, Moxley Branch, Lake View, and Old Orchard. The Huntington/Fox Fire KOA provides additional accommodations with tent sites, RV hookups, and cabin rentals. These mixed-use campgrounds primarily support traditional camping styles with varying levels of amenities, from primitive tent sites to full-service RV hookups with electricity, water, and sewer connections.

Most camping areas near Ona require advance reservations, especially during peak seasons and weekends. Beech Fork State Park's campgrounds tend to fill quickly, particularly from late spring through early fall. Many campgrounds in the area provide electrical hookups, potable water, showers, and toilet facilities. As one visitor noted, "The campgrounds are not on top of each other. There are 4 different campgrounds to choose from based on the amenities you need/want for hookup." Road conditions are generally good with paved access to most established camping areas, though some sites may be unlevel or hold water after rainfall. Cell service can be inconsistent in this region, with some campgrounds reporting limited or no coverage for certain carriers.

Campers frequently mention the natural setting and water access as highlights of the area. The developed campgrounds at Beech Fork State Park border a lake that supports fishing, kayaking, and paddleboating. A visitor described it as "positively photogenic" with wildlife including "geese, ducks and deer." Several campgrounds offer shaded sites with picnic tables and fire rings, though noise can be an issue at some locations. The Huntington/Fox Fire KOA, while convenient for overnight stays, receives mixed reviews due to highway noise from nearby Interstate 64. Quieter experiences are generally found at the more remote campground loops within Beech Fork State Park, where midweek camping provides greater solitude. Site selection significantly impacts the camping experience, with waterfront and more isolated sites typically receiving higher satisfaction ratings.

    Virginia Point Campground

    Tight, easy park

You're parked with rigs on either side of you, but it's clean and friendly with kids playing. It is a neat spot on the river and easy inexpensive stop when traveling through. 50 amp hook up and water. Porta potties.

    Jackson Lake State Park Campground

A day a life in the office

I drove an hour and a half to get here because dyrt showed that we had full AT&T service here that is not the trucks we have between one and two bars of AT&T service so we’ll see if we drove here for me to be able to work for a couple days and be out in God’s creation

Equestrian Campground — Carter Caves State Resort Park

    Under Construction

The equestrian sites are full hookups and able to accommodate large rigs with pull through sites. The RV sites are under construction and will be some time before they are done. Bathhouse is clean and up to date. The roads are narrow and windy.

    Kanawha State Forest

    Beautiful surroundings

Had an overnight stay here on our way to Red River Gorge. This was a nice stop. Fairly quiet with the exception of an annoying dog that barked incessantly and the campers across from us that had to jump in their car and drive full speed to nowhere every 20 minutes. All night long…. Pick up your firewood elsewhere unless you prefer absurdly small bundles at $8.49 per. We had site 31. Some sites are on the small side. Big rigs beware. All in all, a good spot to rest and enjoy some tree therapy.

    Greenbo Lake State Resort Park

Great site, not a lot to do.

Primitive Site 22 was fantastic, tucked away from everyone and quiet. Greenbo just doesn't have a lot to do if you arent boating. And that's okay. We just wanted a lazy trip anyway.

    Ashland Huntington West KOA

    Good Basic KOA

Plenty of spots, including pull thrus. More affordable than some of the nearby state “resort” parks, though without much in the way of shade or scenery. Staff is very kind, helpful, and understanding. Perfect for an overnight.
