Swallow Falls State Park and surrounding forests in western Maryland provide rustic to deluxe cabin accommodations at elevations between 2,200 and 3,000 feet. The region experiences four distinct seasons with heavy snowfall possible from November through March. Camping cabins near Aurora, West Virginia typically require advance reservations, especially during peak foliage season in October when temperatures range from 30°F to 65°F.
What to do
Waterfall exploration: Swallow Falls State Park features Maryland's largest waterfall along with several smaller cascades. "There are only a couple sites with electricity in each of the two loops. The largest falls in Maryland, Muddy Creek Falls, 53 feet. Several other falls on the Youghiogheny River," notes a camper who visited the park.
Lake activities: Deep Creek Lake State Park Campground provides water recreation opportunities from Memorial Day through Labor Day. "The lake is absolutely beautiful and perfect for all types of water sports. It's great for all ages as well, with things to do to keep everybody entertained. The fishing was a lot of fun as well. We caught a solid amount of Bass," reports one visitor.
Rock climbing: Coopers Rock State Forest offers climbing opportunities on natural rock formations. "I have been going here for years and I always love to climb this area. The pitches aren't too high (50ft) but great just to get out there and enjoy life!" explains an experienced climber who frequents the area.
What campers like
Wildlife viewing: Many cabin camping locations feature abundant wildlife observation opportunities. "Deer meander through the primitive tent sites with their fawns each morning and evening," reports a visitor to Canaan Valley Resort State Park, noting the natural setting even near developed areas.
Year-round beauty: The natural environment surrounding Aurora cabin rentals changes dramatically with seasons. "Swallow falls is awesome year round. In the winter the snow and ice is beautiful, fall is lovely and summer is fun," shares one camper who experienced different seasonal conditions.
Trail connectivity: Ohiopyle State Park cabins provide direct access to multiple trail networks. "Awesome campground right on the Great Allegheny Passage trail. We loved being able to access the GAP trail right from the campground," notes a visitor who appreciated the convenient trail access.
What you should know
Spacing between sites: Cabin proximity varies significantly across parks. "The sites are spread out. Electricity at sites but no water or sewer. A new section will be opening later this season that will have elec and water," explains a recent visitor to Coopers Rock about new development.
Seasonal limitations: Winter cabin visitors should verify operational schedules. "The campground was quite possibly the cleanest camp bathrooms I've ever come across. Overall, I couldn't have asked for a better first experience there," reports a summer visitor to Deep Creek Lake, but many facilities close during colder months.
Historical significance: Swallow Falls State Park Campground has noteworthy historical connections. "Henry Ford, Thomas Edison, Harvey Firestone, and John Burroughs camped on the site in 1918, and 1921," shares a camper who researched the area's past.
Tips for camping with families
Playground proximity: Select cabin sites near recreational facilities for convenience. "We had our son and nephew with and we all had a great time at both sites. I will definitely be back," notes a camper who appreciated the family-friendly setup at Kentuck Campground in Ohiopyle State Park.
Beach access: Herrington Manor State Park Campground provides swimming options for children. "There is a really great beach area for the kids (or adults!) to play at, and a general over-abundance of creatures in and around the lake. There are TONS of salamanders along the shore," reports a visitor who enjoyed the natural educational opportunities.
Wildlife education: Many parks offer ranger programs during summer months. "The campsites are great and the people who come here are always really friendly, you're bound to make some friends. Hiking here is gorgeous, and a good workout too," shares a family who enjoyed the social aspects of Swallow Falls.
Tips from RVers
Site selection: Choose cabin locations carefully when traveling with large vehicles. "The RV lots were well maintained and all the asphalt seems to have been redone recently. The bathrooms were clean and heated to a comfortable level. Showers had great pressure as well," reports an RV camper at Coopers Rock State Forest.
Limited big-rig access: Tygart Lake State Park Campground has size restrictions for larger vehicles. "This campground is located in the foothills of the Allegheny Mountains, so the scenery is spectacular. The campground has 36 sites, 10 with electric and 26 standard sites for RV or tent camping," explains a visitor who documented the limited availability of electric sites.
Winter hookups: Check seasonal availability of utility connections for cabin stays. "Just returned from our first weekend here. The new section is open and ready. Water and Electric Only. Dump station on the way out. 50amp - No issues," notes a visitor to Coopers Rock who appreciated the improved infrastructure.
