    SUMMARY PRESENTED BYT-Mobile

Camping near Orting, Washington spans state parks, private RV resorts, and forest service campgrounds, all set against the backdrop of Mount Rainier and the Cascade foothills. The area sits at the convergence of several waterways including the Carbon and Puyallup Rivers, providing riverside camping opportunities at locations like South Prairie Creek RV Park. Kanaskat-Palmer State Park, located about 20 miles east of Orting, offers year-round camping with tent sites, RV hookups, and cabins in a forested setting. Campers seeking proximity to Mount Rainier National Park can find established campgrounds like Cougar Rock, which operates seasonally from late May through early October.

Most campgrounds in the Orting area require reservations, particularly during the peak summer season from June through September. A Washington State Discover Pass ($30 annually) is required for day use at state parks, though overnight camping fees typically include parking. Fire restrictions are common during the dry summer months, especially in areas closer to Mount Rainier. Weather conditions vary significantly by elevation, with lower campgrounds near Orting experiencing milder temperatures than those at higher elevations. Cell service is generally reliable at campgrounds closer to town but becomes spotty in more remote locations near the national park boundary.

RV campers have several options with full hookups, including South Prairie Creek RV Park and Woodside Manor RV Park, both offering year-round access. For tent campers seeking more natural settings, Game Farm Wilderness Campground provides a more rustic experience while still being close to town. According to reviews, road noise can be an issue at some campgrounds located near highways. One visitor noted that "sites adjacent to the highway were so exposed and close, it was almost like camping on the shoulder," highlighting the importance of selecting sites away from main roads. Camp Lakeview in nearby Graham offers family-friendly amenities including lake access and accommodations ranging from tent sites to cabins and yurts.

      La Wis Wis Campground

      Dreamy

This is a very very special campground and I had a hard time leaving. So beyond gorgeous, this is the place to be on very warm summer days if you’re a swimmer. The water is COLD for sure, and I’m pretty used to PNW frigid waters - could have really swam around all day if temps were in the 90’s. I was here when it was lower 70’s and partly cloudy, still beautiful but a little too cold to indulge in a long swim. Many sites are incredibly spacious and private. I had three sites around me vacant (despite the campground being full online) People don’t treat the vault toilets well here unfortunately, and there’s no bear boxes. Super close to Packwood. I really loved this campground for lounging around and for easy NP access.

      Sahara Creek DNR Horse Camp

HORSE WAS SHOT & SHERIFF WOULD NOT COME

This went from a four star stay to one star in the blink of an eye. There is a shooting range directly behind this campground, and the horse trails lead right past it. On August 8th 2026 around 2PM, someone’s horse was shot while they were riding less than a half a mile away from camp and when they called 911, animal control came but police would NOT come even to investigate. This was reckless use of a firearm, animal endangerment, and honestly should be a felony. There is no way to accidentally be shooting at the trails from the shooting range, you have to DECIDE to do that. Police are absolutely useless, and now I know especially in this area the cops don’t give a damn about anyone’s safety.

You can hear shooting nearby all day and all night despite the posted hours at the range. Although it’s a free stay with a discover pass, I will NOT EVER stay here again and would not recommend this place to anyone with horses.

Cougar Rock Group Campground — Mount Rainier National Park

      Some sites better than others

Site C13 is directly next to bathrooms and trash. It is a pull through site. B loop has no facilities but does have unmarked paths that lead directly through C13’s driveway to get to the bathrooms. I had all manner of campers parading past my car, closer than arms length while I was sleeping inside, all night long and especially in the morning as the campers right behind my site walked directly through the campsite itself and around my car. I’d never stay at this one again without blocking off paths and having a big trailer to fill the space.

      Dispersed Camping FS-025

Decent dispersed near Mt Rainier NP

The pullout park spots are very close to the paved road leading to it. No potholes on the dirt road. Secluded/private. Tall rainforest trees provide shade during the day. There are several spots for vans, conversions, and short RVs. No Internet. No water. No vault toilets. No trash. Primitive dispersed site.

      FR74 dispersed

      Try another road/spot

The main pullout was taken. It looks as if the RV has been there for more than 14 days (it is on jack stands). Another reviewer mentioned the potholes. Thats a fact. I drive around in a RWD Chevy Astro van, and I bet that primitive, unguarded road chewed into the rubber between my suspension parts. No Internet. No access to the river, (unless you want to cut all the thick foliage)away like exploiters and trailblazers did in the 1800’s. ) Only one fire pit, the one the RV was at. You can drive up a little further and crash for the night. It is level. This dirt road is one lane. It is heavily non-RV friendly. I didn't even sleep there. I checked it out, then decided to drive to nearby Mount Rainier NP. This place was pretty though. Like a rainforest you see in Olympic NP.

      Bummed

Showed up on a Thursday not expecting many folks, so we were surprised to see so many for a weekday. If we’d known it was basically a free “campground” not one or Two dispersed sites we wouldn’t have come. Our fault for that. I was surprised with people parking close to us, blocking the view because they parked right behind us, no spacial awareness and a lot less manners than you’d think. Luckily the place was clean, toilets were gross when we showed up Thursday, poo in the urinal and I’ve never ever in my 45 years of camping seen such a full porta potty. Thank goodness they came and emptied them Friday which is the usual Apparently. We met a few Nice people and that was fantastic, but seriously, who pulls a huge rig behind you to block the view? I just can’t get over that. Needless to say we won’t come back.

      Straddleline Park

      Calm weekend

I’m a tent camper, and messed up and reserved a RV spot. I paid for another spot more suited for tent camping and moved over. When talking to the campsite manager the following day, she offered to refund the 2nights at the wrong site. We declined the refund just because it goes to keeping the area put together and she was doing a fantastic job keeping everything clean and restocked over the short stay we were there.

Men’s restroom had 2 urinals three stalls and a shower, women’s restroom had three stalls and a shower. One larger stall in both.

      riffe lake

      Great Views!

Nice area near the lake that seems pretty popular. Arrived on a Thursday to a decent amount of campers here.

There are porta potties here, however they are in desperate need of some cleaning and emptying.

      The views were great though.

      The Waterfront at Potlatch

We’ll come back again and again

It’s so interesting to read past reviews before getting here and contrasting that with my experience. To be on the water, and be able to watch the tide move in and out every day on the beautiful and peaceful Hood Canal, is an absolute treasure. Yes, highway 101 is loud. There’s no doubt about that. But this small well-maintained RV park of only 16 sites, including full hook ups, is an absolute gem. We stayed here two weeks on site 16 and 11. (Much prefer 16 because it’s on the edge, how the sun is angled this time of the year, we quickly had loads of shade from our RV to sit in, and it’s by a little creek. But side 11 is also nice because there’s more opportunities to chitchat with people as you are in the middle of the campground.) We have met so many incredible people here and exchanged information so we can stay in touch. I will put this on my favorites list and absolutely intend return. In fact, many of the people we met here are people who come year after year after year. The only real downside in my opinion is the fact that there is nowhere that you can hike reachable by foot from the campground. So my husband, dog, and I did our daily walks at the marina parking lot nextdoor, where we would do loops, talk to the fisherman, and eat whatever blackberries ripened overnight. As we are full timers, I was absolutely content to sit outside our rig overlooking the water and work. If you are someone who needs a lot “to do “this may not be the campground for you. But if you are someone who loves to just be by the water and enjoy the tranquility and friendliness of fellow campers, this spot is for you.

    Guide to Orting

Camping spots near Orting, Washington range from lakeside retreats to forested state parks within a 30-minute drive of town. The area sits at approximately 200 feet elevation in the Puyallup River Valley, with summer temperatures averaging 75-85°F and significantly cooler nights in spring and fall. Winter camping is available at select locations, though rainfall increases substantially from November through March.

    What to do

**River exploration: Access points along the Carbon and Puyallup Rivers provide opportunities for fishing and wading. "Short hike to river spots that are perfect for wading or fishing. 10 minute drive from Deep Lake which is beautiful and great for swimming and paddle boarding," notes a visitor to Kanaskat-Palmer State Park.

**Trail hiking: Most campgrounds offer interconnected trail systems through second-growth forests. At Kanaskat-Palmer State Park, "each site seems to have a trail connecting to the outer trail that runs along the river. Big entertainment for three boys who explored the woods and played on the rocks and in the eddy pools at the public river take-out."

**Beach access: Several campgrounds provide lake or beach access within walking distance from campsites. At Dash Point State Park, "the beach is a short walk from camp, just long enough to make you feel like you earned your sunset view, but not so long that you regret your life choices. It's more of a rocky, muddy beach than a sandy one."

    What campers like

**Privacy between sites: Campgrounds in the Orting area often feature natural vegetation barriers. At Dash Point State Park, "this campground is remarkable in the privacy between each of the camping spots, the bird life, the wild and deep forest vibes, and the walking trails."

**Clean facilities: Many campgrounds maintain high standards for bathrooms and showers. At Elkamp Eastcreek, visitors appreciate "very nice campground, full hookups and tent sites available. Sites fairly large & private with tons of old trees and right next to a creek. Bathrooms clean. Fire pits and firewood available from hosts."

**Community amenities: Some campgrounds offer shared spaces that enhance the camping experience. According to a camper at Game Farm Wilderness Campground, "Accommodating recreation vehicles, trailers, and tents, the site provides 18 campsites with water and electricity hookups, picnic tables, and fire pits. Visitors can enjoy the shared picnic shelter and an RV dump site."

    What you should know

**Reservation requirements: Most sites fill quickly during summer months. "We got lucky and snagged the very last spot here on a Saturday in late September. It's a beautiful campground, very peaceful, other campers were quiet and respectful, we were surprised at how quiet the place was despite being completely full."

**Noise considerations: Some campgrounds experience external noise. Dash Point visitors note "it's tucked into the city so it's busy. You might hear a bit of road noise, depending on your site. But it's a small price to pay for a low-effort, high-reward camping weekend."

**Rule enforcement: Campground regulations are strictly monitored at some locations. At Cougar Rock Campground, located within Mount Rainier National Park, alcohol is prohibited, as are pets on most trails. Many park campgrounds near Orting maintain similar restrictions.

    Tips for camping with families

**Playground access: Several campgrounds offer dedicated play areas for children. At Camp Lakeview, "there is a day use lake and we had a wonderful time camping here! This campground has super friendly staff, decent bathrooms and showers, laundry facility, access to a lake, fishing is welcome, swimming allowed, great playground for kids."

**Trail difficulty: Check trail ratings before heading out with young children. At Elkamp Eastcreek, "the meadow over the bridge is a hidden delight. Constant attention to the grounds regularly," making it suitable for explorers of all ages.

**Wildlife viewing: Many campgrounds offer opportunities to observe local wildlife. "Dash Point has full hookups available, showers are older but clean. Need to buy tokens for the shower. Lots of trails and beach" where children can explore tide pools and observe marine life.

    Tips from RVers

**Site selection: Choose sites away from main roads for reduced noise. At Holiday Park Military - Lewis McChord Base, "sites are a bit close, but the campground loop makes it feel spacious. Clean showers. There is no wifi unless you're at the camp office."

**Hookup availability: Most RV sites provide electric-only connections. "We stayed in our 30' Motorhome so not the typical experience others would have in a true RV site. I only took away a star because it was advertised as ok for a Motorhome but the gravel pull through was so not level the jacks pushed the front tires 6 inches off the ground."

**Cell service considerations: Reception varies significantly across the area. One camper noted, "Cell signal is very weak for t-mobile and trees prevent starlink from working well," while others report strong service at campgrounds closer to town.
