    Thousand Trails Virginia Landing

    Nice spot

The campground seems a bit out of the way, but it’s in a great location if you want to get away from the more crowded parks nearby. The staff was extremely helpful and everything was clean. My only issue was not every spot had a fire pit, but other then that I highly recommend!

    Pocomoke River State Park Campground

    Amazing Grounds!

Wow, stayed on this place en route up the East Coast and I was amazed! The bathrooms and cabins must have been new, or at least just renovated. The bathroom was almost like showering at a spa! Stainless steel, wood paneling, very clean. The cabins included ac/heater, ceiling fan, nice bed padding, and plastic chairs/table. The site also included a picnic table and fire pit. Pet friendly as we stayed with our golden retriever with a great view of the river. This campsite is a must stay, especially for glampers and probably a good choice for those who love ac/heating!

    Thousand Trails Virginia Landing

Great Experience for Families with Kids

Our family of five (Kids: 13, 10, 7) recently stayed at Virginia Landing, and it was an great experience overall, especially for families with kids. However, with some small park improvements visits could be enhanced.

The campground provided opportunities for exploration and outdoor activities that kept our kids entertained throughout our three night stay. The park is wide-open, which provided plenty of space for kids to roam and explore. Virginia Landing is located right on the shore and we felt perfectly comfortable allowing the kids to freely run around and engage in activities they don't typically (i.e. clamming, kite flying).

The park had a spacious layout that allowed for easy RV maneuvering. Whether you're a seasoned RV enthusiast or a camper just starting out, you'll appreciate the space. All sites were  accessible and comfortable for campers.

The campground staff was also helpful in guiding us to our site and providing any necessary assistance, making the whole process hassle-free.

We believe a small playground and spruced up facilities would enhance the stay for families.

    Jellystone Park™ Chincoteague Island

    Location trumps privacy

We don’t always pick campgrounds for their spacious sites and scenic views. BUT we do pick them based on the outdoor activities we can do from the campground itself via bike riding or walking. Since we don’t bring a car location is very important to us.

This private campground is in a fantastic location. Waking distance to stores, water slide park, kayaking, fishing/crabbing from bridges and Biking distance to Chincoteague Wildlife Refuge & Assateague Island National Seashore . There is even a complimentary trolley that will take you to the beach during the “in season”.

You can rent kayaks and bikes from this resort. There is a pool, jumping pillow, and playground. The water park adjacent cost an additional fee. They have 3 day passes and after 3pm packages. (You May also get a discount from KOA front desk)

The campground- tight and efficient with a lot of options for staying here from little cabins safari style tent cabins, rental Rv’s, grassy tent area to full hook up rv sites. We had a premium RV site and since we were here off season in late April- the campground was not super busy. Just expect that you will be in very close proximity of your neighbors and it will be loud and boisterous in the evening. Our solution?? Hike and Bike all day so you are exhausted. That way after dinner and a couple of glasses of wine... you really don’t care.

We came here specifically to experience the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge and Assateague Island VA National Seashore and the parks did not disappoint. We biked and hiked the the parks but you can easily enjoy a lot of the sites via car. Just know that pets are NOT allowed. There are Ubers in this area. Here is a link to the trail and park map.
    https://www.fws.gov/uploadedFiles/Region_5/NWRS/South_Zone/Chincoteague_Complex/Chincoteague/Chincoteague%20Refuge%20Trail%20Map%20(1).pdf

There is a fee of $10 per car for 7 day pass. Bikers and Pedestrians get in free. (The fee gets you into both parks).

    Happy Camping! Pamela and Keith

    Milburn Landing Campground

    Great campground, beautiful setting!

Note: There are two separate areas of this park: Shad Landing, in Snow Hill, and Milburn Landing, in Pocomoke City. Shad Landing is the main area of the park, and contains the camp store, marina, multiple camping loops, swimming pool, etc. The two areas are right across the river from each other, but it’s about a 20-minute drive, since you have to drive up and around the river.

The site was very large, level, and heavily shaded by loblolly pines. Nice open-ish area to the side and behind the site, where we were able to hang our hammocks and clothesline. The pines provided great shade, but little privacy between sites. The campground itself was very pretty and well laid out, but most sites were a little too close together for my taste. I really did enjoy our particular site, but it was a bit too far from the bath house for those traveling with little kids. Camping loop also has a partial view of the river, and is steps away from the Nassawango Pavilion and tire playground (which was great for us, because we were holding our family reunion in said pavilion). One note: the loop road is nicely flat and paved, but very tight and winding, with lots of trees right next to it. Be prepared for a multi-point turn to back into your site!

Bath house was large and extremely clean; renovated within the last year. Two large shower stalls; one was a handicapped stall with the detachable shower head, which was great for showering my toddler off. Water was nice and hot, and pressure was strong. I’m assuming they had well water, as i could feel the slight “sliminess” of a water softener. There was also a nice, large dishwashing sink on the outside. Nearby pavilion and tire playground were very clean and well-maintained, with a beautiful view of the Pocomoke River. Nice dock for fishing and boat launch. This seems to be the more “quiet” side of the park; if you’re looking for more on-site activities and amenities, head over to Shad Landing.

There is a ton to do within an hour’s drive! Ocean City, Salisbury Zoo, Historic Berlin, Assateague, Wallops Island, you name it. A great base camp from which to explore all Delmarva has to offer.

Overall, we really enjoyed this park, and the setting couldn’t be more beautiful. If we were to return, we would probably camp on the Shad Landing side, as it has more amenities right there, and the campsites over there seemed more private and wooded than those at Milburn.

    Kiptopeke State Park Campground

    Awesome Yurt Camping

This was our first time staying in a yurt at Kiptopeake State Park. We love staying in the yurts at Virginia State Parks because they are always an affordable, easy way to camping without having to set up a tent or spend the extra money for a cabin. The ones at here are $75/night. This one was awesome! It is hidden down a long walkway from the parking area and is very secluded. The one we stayed in, Yurt 4, only has neighbors on one side. It comes with two picnic tables, a water spigot, fire pit, grill, a big deck around the yurt with rocking chairs, and a refreshing breeze coming off the bay. Unfortunately, the way the yurt is situated, none of that breeze gets inside the yurt and it was very hot inside. Especially if staying here in the summer, I would suggest bringing some fans or a portable a/c for a more comfortable nights sleep. The bathrooms are farther away than I would like with little kids. You have to walk through to the tent campground loop to get to them. Even with a couple negative things about it, I think this is the way to stay here at Kiptopeake and I am already planning our next yurt trip here for next year!

Love this park so much! The beach is amazing. This time we discovered the dog-friendly beach, which was less crowded than the main one. I always like to go out and watch the sunset over the bay, it is magical!

    Bethpage Camp-Resort

    Amazing facility!

    -Positives-

Sites are spacious! Golf cart rentals Pool is incredible for all ages. Employees are super friendly. 50amp & 30amp hookup. Sewer is in 2 locations for each site. WiFi available. Multiple kids playgrounds. Ice cream shop. Sheriff monitoring the whole facility.

    -Negatives-

Roads are tight. Golf carts were difficult to reserve. Golf carts were only available for pickup at 1/2pm the day of your rental(Kind of a waste)

    Cannot wait to return here!

    Pocomoke River State Park Campground

    Shads Landing Camping

I definitely had the best site on the block! Caddy corner from the bath house, but not so close to be disturbing, & it was very clean w/ nice hot water showers & spacious adjacent changing area with bench & lots of hooks to hang towel, clothes, etc. Well kept site with built up flat tent pad, (down side is limit 2 tents & must be on pad when there was plenty of room for several tents without an RV. ). Nice long picnic table with benches, fire ring is a safe distance from tent pad. There is a fish cleaning station w/ hook & all, for any who want to fish in the park lake. Can rent canoes/kayaks & there is a pool that I think has a lifeguard. Friends had a much smaller site next to mine & on the other side of them were our friends with a huge RV w/ pull outs, where we had plenty of room for twenty to cook breakfast & dinner, gather round the fire for s'mores & lounge in camp chairs & still had room for most of the tour bikes in "the driveway". Other friends had sites peppered around the loop and all said they were comfortable. A little spooky Thurs. night for this woman to camp alone before more campers arrived Fri, but all-in-all a nice place to camp in a forest with a lake that is far enough away , but not too far, from Berlin, Assateague Island, & Ocean City, MD. Best to have what you need before you get there because the camp store was closed & stores are not close enough to run out for toothpaste.

Guide to Tangier

Waterfront camping sites surround Tangier, Virginia with options spanning from Chesapeake Bay to Atlantic coastal areas. The eastern shore region features tidal marshlands with water access ranging from beachfront to riverfront locations. Many campgrounds maintain sites that are open from early April through mid-November, though several larger operations maintain year-round availability with heated facilities during winter months.

What to do

Kayaking trails for all skill levels: At Janes Island State Park Campground, paddlers can explore marked water routes through diverse environments. "The park has well-marked kayaking trails. The water trails have a big variety from large channels to narrow marsh routes and bird watching is excellent," notes Sean F., who recommends allowing extra exploration time.

Crabbing from docks and shorelines: The tidal waters near Kiptopeke State Park Campground provide excellent blue crab habitats. "My kids loved catching tiny crabs in the mud every night," reports Angelica K., highlighting how accessible this activity is for families staying in waterfront sites.

Wildlife viewing and bird identification: Nature enthusiasts find extensive opportunities for spotting shore birds, marine life, and woodland creatures. "Great fishing, crabbing and just plain relaxation. The bugs can be friendly at times," warns Sean R., reminding visitors that insect protection is essential during summer months.

What campers like

Secluded waterfront sites: Thousand Trails Virginia Landing offers prime bay-view campsites. "The sunset over the old pier is breathtaking. I hope they rebuild the pier. My kids loved catching tiny crabs in the mud every night," shares Angelica K. about the peaceful waterfront setting.

Modern bath facilities: Many eastern shore campgrounds maintain high-quality washrooms. "Bathhouse is in very nice condition. Looking forward to the weekend warming up," notes David S., referencing how clean facilities enhance the camping experience even during cooler spring weather.

Multiple water recreation options: Sun Outdoors Cape Charles provides access to both pool and bay swimming. "We have a blast every time we come here. The bathrooms are clean and updated. There is plenty to do. Pool, beach, fishing, boat rentals, golf, paddle boats, bike rentals, and crabbing," explains Melissa P.

What you should know

Seasonal bug considerations: Biting insects can be problematic during peak summer months. "The bugs can be friendly at times. Unfortunately the facilities are starting to get rundown, the owner's do not like to spend money on the amenities," mentions Sean R., suggesting that bug spray is an essential packing item.

Limited shopping options: Most campgrounds near Tangier require planning ahead for supplies. "This place is quiet and beautiful. Has so much to see and do. There is mini golf, volley ball, fishing, and a playground for the kids," says Delores T. about Cross Rip Camp, while other reviewers note the remote location.

Water quality variations: Campgrounds on river systems versus bay locations offer different swimming experiences. "Restrooms are clean but the whole town uses well water, so that was special," notes Gina G., highlighting how water sources affect shower quality and drinking water taste at some locations.

Tips for camping with families

Beach alternatives: While ocean beaches get crowded, bay beaches offer calmer waters. "There's a beach that's an easy 1-mile paddle away with lots of room to spread out and have a private space to yourself," recommends Sean F., detailing how Janes Island provides uncrowded beach access via kayak.

Multiple play options: Shad Landing Campground offers diverse recreation for different ages. "The office staff were very nice. Also, its the cheapest place to camp in the area. The forest is beautiful," shares Miranda M., highlighting the value for budget-conscious families.

Easy hiking trails: Many eastern shore campgrounds feature flat, accessible nature walks. "Nice easy back-in sites, full hookups in good working order, and friendly hosts. Great walking trails, boardwalks, and beach access," explains Elizabeth N., noting how trail systems accommodate various ability levels.

Tips from RVers

Hookup limitations: Most campgrounds offer electricity but not all provide water and sewer at each site. "Not much to do close by. Nice dock for boats and great kayak trails. Biking is fun around the old towns nearby," advises Robyn B., suggesting activities that don't require full hookups.

Site selection strategy: Most campgrounds have varied site layouts with different levels of shade. "Site 317 with full hookups. We missed the shade a lot, but the evening breeze off the bay made up for it," shares Angelica K., highlighting how waterfront locations typically offer less tree coverage but better breezes.

Seasonal closures: Many glamping facilities near Tangier operate seasonally. "We camp here every September. Tons for the kids to do: crabbing and fishing from the pier (or rent a boat), jumping pillows, great pool area for the kids, mini golf," mentions Carrie A., noting that shoulder seasons offer fewer crowds but some amenities may be limited.
