Several RV parks near Damascus provide full hookup options for motorhomes and travel trailers. Laurel Creek RV Park offers water, sewer, and 50-amp electrical connections year-round with pull-through sites accommodating larger rigs. River Country Campground & RV Park features 61 sites with full hookups, including both 30 and 50-amp service, plus amenities like showers, restrooms, and a camp store. "Our site was very long, had a huge patio, was level, and water and electric were well-placed," noted one camper about a nearby state park. Lakeview RV Resort in Bluff City provides full-service sites with fire rings and picnic tables, while Peak Creek RV Campground offers more limited amenities but maintains a perfect 5-star rating.

Navigation into mountain campgrounds requires careful planning, especially for larger motorhomes. Many parks in the region have tight turns and elevation changes that can challenge drivers of big rigs. Cell service varies significantly throughout the area, with some campgrounds offering WiFi to compensate for spotty coverage. A review mentioned that "getting parked was a bit of a challenge to get things as level as possible and work around power stand and be able to get awning out." Dump stations are available at most established RV parks, though not all smaller facilities offer this service. Between April and October, campgrounds along the Blue Ridge Parkway fill quickly, making advance reservations essential. Most parks welcome pets but enforce leash requirements and may have breed restrictions.

      Raccoon Holler Campground

      Perfect for Families

Family-friendly campground with plenty of fun activities for kids. Playground, fishing pond, disc golf, recreation and game area, and ice cream trailer. Our site was nicely shaded and fairly level. Fire pit and picnic table at each site. There appears to be a lot of long-term residents but all sites were very well kept and the campground was very clean. The best part was the friendly staff!

Doughton Park Campground — Blue Ridge Parkway

      Quiet Mountain Campground

On the Blue Ridge Parkway, nestled in the trees and mountains of North Carolina, this campground has been well maintained. Sites are ample but the asphalt pads were designed for shorter travel trailers, but include an extra pad for the tow vehicle. Many of the sites have upgraded concrete pads for the picnic table and built-in fire pits. There are no showers in the trailer (RV) loop, but does include a couple comfort station with flush toilets. Campground hosts were helpful and friendly. Sites are split between first come first serve and reservations. Payment at kiosk by credit card only.

      Doe Valley Campground

      Clean, Peaceful, and Convenient

5/21/23-6/22/23: We stayed a whole month ($500) to recuperate from our previous travels. Owner/manger, Brent Fowler, was a gracious and accommodating host. This is a new 110 acre campground which has only been open a few months (as of this writing). The grounds were well kept and new features are continually being added. There are full-hookups at each site (20/30/50A, water, sewer), high-speed WiFi, and 150 new trees have been planted around the perimeter. While there is presently no water at the dump station, there will be, but water can be used from nearby pull-through sites. Further, a bath-house with showers and laundry facilities are in the works. Mountain City is under 5 miles away and proved to be very convenient.

Wildlife in the campground and surrounding area was abound with a variety of birds wakening us each morning, and deer that came into camp regularly. Red winged black birds, swallows, and Cardinals are all abundant and quite vociferous. This new campground has the most important quality down pat: Friendly and supportive ownership! We plan to return next year and will likely stay much longer.

      Mountain River Family Campground

      Home away from Home

We have been staying at Mtn River for about 3 years now and it’s become ‘home away from home’. You have your choice of river or mountainside sites. We prefer the river sites personally for the views & fishing.

The campground owners are fantastic people who’ve become friends. They live on site and take great pride in the property. The property is always impeccable. They are always working. Such a gorgeous place!! The pond is in the center of the property- yes you can fish(catch& release).

Areas setup with hammocks, corn hole, seating, etc. The new playground has been a big hit! Oh, and there’s also a dog park area.

The bathhouses are super clean and have air conditioning. The laundry room is brand new with great units and also A/C.

They incorporated additional activities this year over at the pavilion which our family has loved! Bingo, tie-dye t-shirts, food trucks, live music, and more! Our grandson loves to join us. Lots of kids and a great area for them to all play.

Tubing the river is always a fun treat! You can bring your own tubes or rent from the campground.

The camp store has expanded and features a mix of items- t-shirts, hats, hoodies, koozies, and more. As well as local jams, rubs, and other treats. They’re in the process of building a new office/camp store so we’re excited to see this complete.

We have a 40’ fifth wheel. No problems every getting in. They accommodate all size rigs. All sites have a concrete pad, fire pit and very nice large picnic table. Sites are spacious and do not feel cramped like we've experienced at other campgrounds.

Wi-Fi is generally pretty good. We’ve been able to work remote on some of our trips. We even had phone service our last trip(AT&T)!

Lots to do in the area! Hiking, Linville Winery(yum!), Linville Caverns, Grandfather Mtn and so many other great places. The office staff can certainly provide plenty of recommendations, too.

There are 2 grocery stores in town about 15min away. There’s also a local dollar store about 5min away.

We cannot say enough good things about MRFC. We’ve met some great campers there who we now call friends. We truly love this place and already have bookings for next year!

Hickory Ridge Campground — Grayson Highlands State Park

Small campground in a beautiful state park

General: Smallish campground (< 70 sites in two loops) with a mixture of water/electric and tent sites with no hookups, and also four yurts.

Site Quality: Some were back-in and some were pull-through. Gravel pads. Not a lot of separation between the sites. Some were more level than others but not a problem to make it work for us.

Bathhouse: Heated! Clean. One shower in the bathroom plus additional shower rooms. Best place in the campground to catch a fleeting cell signal so it was not unusual to see people in the bathroom on their phones!

Activities/Amenites: Hiking! Close to the AT. Unfortunately, the best trail IMO was the Cabin Creek Trail (it was also awarded one of the best 25 trails in the US) but it is not accessible directly from the campground. There is also a small country store, but it was not open when we were there. There is a small museum at the Visitor Center and well worth a trip there. There is also a dump station.

There was an unseasonable cold snap when we were there in October (temps got down to mid-20s with wind chill in the teens) so even though we had planned on two nights there, once we hiked the Cabin Creek and Rhododendron trails, we decided to go to a lower elevation and warm up!

      Lake Haven Family Campground

Stayed for the location, Left because of the owners

As a retired Air Force couple with over five years of experience as full-time RVers, we have stayed at countless campgrounds across the country. We selected Lake Haven for an extended stay this past July while searching for a permanent home in the Lake Watauga area, drawn by its advertisement for year-round availability. The location is excellent, and our site was level with full hookups, a nice picnic table, and a fire pit. Maneuvering into the spot was also straightforward, despite some large boulders. Two concerns: no owners or host(s) onsite and the entrance/exits can be quite dangerous- each located on a curve. We really wanted to love this campground, but the positive aspects were completely overshadowed by the unprofessional behavior of the owners. The tone was set when we received a campground-wide text message asking“Please, for our sake, when away from your camper, set your AC temp to something reasonable(75 is what I use at my house when not home), to help us save on electricity”. While we understand the concern for costs, the request felt invasive. Then it got personal. In the first week of August, our daughter and her family were renting the on-site(3 bed/3 bath) Airbnb, and after she inquired about more toilet paper, one of the owners came to our RV site to confront us about it. We were shocked that a necessity for a rental guest was treated as a major issue, and the confrontational approach was completely uncalled for and made us feel extremely uncomfortable. To make matters worse, we later learned from other campers that the owners had been gossiping about our family and our stay. This was a major violation of our privacy and fostered a deeply unwelcoming atmosphere. While the physical campground has potential, we cannot recommend it. Feeling safe and respected is essential when you are camping, and due to the owners’ intrusive and unprofessional behavior, we decided to seek out another campground.

      Raccoon Holler Campground

      Nice Campground / Great Location

I picked this campground because it was very close to Blue Ridge Parkway. My plan was to ride my motorcycle through this beautiful area of NC, but the rain didn't cooperate this trip. I camped in site 112. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful. This was a last minute reservation and they had limited availability. The site is not very level and very tight for my 32 foot RV. The site had full hookups (water, sewer, 30 amp electric) that worked great. I walked most of the campground and there are some great sites. Most are wooded and reasonably spaced. Quite a few long term campers, but the rigs and sites were all very well kept. At $64 per night it is a little pricey, for site 112, but probably not for the campground and area as a whole. No grill, just a tire rim for campfires and a picnic table.

Getting parked was a bit of a challenge to get things as level as possible and work around power stand and be able to get awning out to stay out of rain.

I would camp here again and recommend others give it a try. Lots to do in this part of the NC mountains.

Doughton Park Campground — Blue Ridge Parkway

      Great, quiet campground

Doughton Park CG: (Scale 1- bad, 5-Very good (70 yr olds in 17’ trailer) Overall Rating: 4.5 Price: $10/ night w senior pass Usage during visit: low due to rain Site Privacy: some, like ours - #9, are very good Site Spacing: some sites are nicely space and some are pretty close. Site surface: Blacktop Reservations: Yes Campground Noise: Very quiet during our stay. A small group of folks, older, play music together on a regular basis. Bring your instrument and join them. One plays a lot of Gordon Lightfoot - they were friends. Low key and quiet. Very, very enjoyable.
Road Noise: Sites 1 and 2 are close to the parkway. The rest of the sites are set far enough back that, maybe motorcycles can be heard. Right now through there is no through traffic as a nearby portion of the parkway is in the middle of a 3 year construction project. Through Traffic in campground: None Electricity: No Water: Availability at the dump station and one faucet.
Sewer Hook up: No Dump Station: Yes Generators: Allowed Bathroom: Small and clean. Showers: No Pull Throughs: Most or all are back in.
Cell Service (Verizon): Good from our site Setting: Deciduous forest on high ground. Weather: Unseasonably wet during our stay. 4 days of almost non-stop rain
Bugs: None Solar: Fixed solar panels might work in sites 1 and 2. Host: Present. Rig size: There are a couple 30 to 35’ rigs here Sites: #9, our site, is one of the best sites we have had in almost 4 years of travel. The regulars call this site the “honeymoon site”, because of the heart shaped large rocks which create a lower terraced picnic area. Best sites: 9 very best, 4, 8, 7. Next best: 5,21,19. Nice but picnic area is not quite as private: 20, 18,16,14,12,11,10. All other sites along the outer side of the loop I would be happy with. The exception are sites 1 and 2. These two sites are along the parkway.

    Guide to Damascus

Located near the Blue Ridge Parkway, Damascus, Virginia sits at 1,950 feet elevation in the Appalachian Mountains. The area experiences moderate rainfall throughout the year with summer temperatures averaging 80-85°F. Camping opportunities range from developed campgrounds with full hookups to primitive sites along hiking paths, with most sites open seasonally from April through October.

    What to do

Bike the Virginia Creeper Trail: Access this 34-mile trail directly from Laurel Creek RV Park. "This campground is small and no bathrooms, but it is directly on the Creeper so that makes up for it! Great location also because it is close to restaurants and the center of the small town," notes one camper.

Fish in local waterways: Many campgrounds offer creek or river access for fishing. At Peak Creek RV Campground, "Host was very accommodating and had inner tubes for floating in the stream," according to a recent visitor.

Hike to waterfalls: The region features numerous hiking trails leading to scenic waterfalls. A camper at Linville Falls Campground shared, "There are A LOT of spots in a small area. That would be my only complaint if you want to call it that. The campgrounds clean and the owners are super nice and helpful."

    What campers like

Quiet, natural settings: Campsites often feature creekside locations with abundant wildlife. One reviewer at Fries New RiverTrail RV Park described their experience: "In the morning we saw that most of the sites are parallel to the creek that runs through the site. And while the ones that are up a little further are off creek..they have either large decks or porch swings right on their site."

Trail accessibility: Many rv sites near Damascus, Virginia offer direct access to popular trails. "The start of the trail is less than 1/2 mile from the campground and travels along the New River for miles. It is also possible to reach Galax by bike along a spur - about 11 miles from the campground," noted a camper at Fries New RiverTrail RV Park.

Family-friendly amenities: Campgrounds typically provide picnic tables, fire rings, and level sites. At Lakeview RV Resort, a visitor reported, "Campground sites are a bit close together but it is well maintained and has friendly staff. Wifi works well. Nice dog park."

    What you should know

Cell service variability: Connectivity can be inconsistent in mountainous areas. Some campgrounds compensate with WiFi services. "Great WiFi and cable hookups," mentioned a camper at Fries New RiverTrail RV Park.

Elevation affects temperatures: Higher elevation campgrounds often remain cooler than surrounding areas. A reviewer at Doughton Park Campground noted, "It's high in elevation so it's cooler than the surrounding areas. There are trails you can hike from camp."

Limited grocery options: Small towns near camping areas may have minimal shopping. "Supplies slim in Fries area. CVS/Dollar General," warned a camper at Fries New RiverTrail RV Park.

Seasonal availability: Most campgrounds operate from April through October. At Doughton Park Campground, a visitor shared, "We were told by a ranger we talked with earlier in the day that this campground might be closed for the season but the gates were open, so we checked it out and saw a sign saying that it would close for the season on November 4."

    Tips for camping with families

Choose campgrounds with playgrounds: Some RV parks near Damascus offer dedicated play areas. At River Country Campground & RV Park, a camper mentioned, "New playground for the kids! Remodeled bath houses make it the nicest campground on the river."

Consider bath facilities: Not all campgrounds provide shower facilities. "These are the cleanest bathrooms we've ever seen. The on-site store is a life saver and the hosts are very helpful," shared a visitor at Linville Falls Campground.

Look for water features: Creeks and rivers provide natural entertainment for children. At Butler TN RV full hookup campsite, a camper described it as an "Absolutely beautiful mountain retreat. This single RV campsite has full hookups, including 30&50 amp electric, sewer, water and wireless WiFi."

    Tips from RVers

Check site length and hookup locations: Many RV sites near Damascus, Virginia have specific configurations. A reviewer at River Country Campground & RV Park noted, "River front sites, pull thru sites and tent sites. If you want to get away but have some conveniences (flushing toilets and hot showers), this is the place for you!"

Prepare for mountain driving: Access to some campgrounds involves narrow, winding roads. "We followed the directions provided by Tom, the owner, to a 'T'. The roads were windy and a tad narrow but definitely do-able as long as you took your time," advised a camper at Fries New RiverTrail RV Park.

Confirm amenities before booking: RV parks offer varying levels of hookups and facilities. At Laurel Creek RV Park, a visitor reported, "This campground is small and no bathrooms, but it is directly on the Creeper so that makes up for it! Great location also because it is close to restaurants and the center of the small town."
