Stayed for the location, Left because of the owners

As a retired Air Force couple with over five years of experience as full-time RVers, we have stayed at countless campgrounds across the country. We selected Lake Haven for an extended stay this past July while searching for a permanent home in the Lake Watauga area, drawn by its advertisement for year-round availability. The location is excellent, and our site was level with full hookups, a nice picnic table, and a fire pit. Maneuvering into the spot was also straightforward, despite some large boulders. Two concerns: no owners or host(s) onsite and the entrance/exits can be quite dangerous- each located on a curve. We really wanted to love this campground, but the positive aspects were completely overshadowed by the unprofessional behavior of the owners. The tone was set when we received a campground-wide text message asking“Please, for our sake, when away from your camper, set your AC temp to something reasonable(75 is what I use at my house when not home), to help us save on electricity”. While we understand the concern for costs, the request felt invasive. Then it got personal. In the first week of August, our daughter and her family were renting the on-site(3 bed/3 bath) Airbnb, and after she inquired about more toilet paper, one of the owners came to our RV site to confront us about it. We were shocked that a necessity for a rental guest was treated as a major issue, and the confrontational approach was completely uncalled for and made us feel extremely uncomfortable. To make matters worse, we later learned from other campers that the owners had been gossiping about our family and our stay. This was a major violation of our privacy and fostered a deeply unwelcoming atmosphere. While the physical campground has potential, we cannot recommend it. Feeling safe and respected is essential when you are camping, and due to the owners’ intrusive and unprofessional behavior, we decided to seek out another campground.

We’re disappointed by this review and feel compelled to respond with clarity and honesty, as several claims made are not only misleading but demonstrably false.

First, we take pride in offering a clean, safe, and peaceful environment for all guests. Our campground is well-maintained, and our Airbnb rental is professionally cleaned and stocked with starter supplies according to the number of guests that were on the reservation. Unfortunately, your daughter reserved for 2 but had 6 or 8 guests, and the unit was left in a very dirty state following your daughter’s stay. We learned a lesson, if this happens again, the guests will be asked to leave according to Airbnb policy.

Regarding the text message about air conditioning: this was a general courtesy message sent to all guests to not leave their A/C running at 60 degrees when not at the camper, during a period of unusually high electricity usage, as requested by our electric company. It was not targeted at any individual and was intended to promote responsible energy use, which is standard practice at many campgrounds.

As for the accusation of gossip: we categorically deny this. We do not engage in or tolerate gossip about our guests. We maintain a professional standard of conduct and expect the same from those who stay with us. Any discomfort you experienced was not due to our actions, but rather a result of the tension created by the condition in which the rental was left and the poisonous gossip you started.

We also want to address the safety concern regarding the entrance and exit. While the curves are part of the natural landscape, they are clearly marked, and we have taken steps to ensure visibility and safe access. Many guests have navigated them without issue.

We also feel that this review was retailiatory in nature. The Self's wanted to be camphosts, and receive a large discount, which is not something we can afford.

The Self's were camping with us for months, were given free parking for an extra truck as well as their boat, free firewood, and a discount for their stay. They texted and called constantly complaining about other campers, fireworks at the park next door being aimed at their camper (other guests told us that did not happen when we showed up at midnight to check), had their dogs off leash constantly after being told many times that other guests were not comfortable with it and it is against our rules. We are glad they're gone, and should have thrown them out for violations. Our bad for being too nice.

We understand that not every stay is perfect, but we will not allow false claims to damage the reputation we’ve worked hard to build. We welcome constructive feedback, but we also stand by the truth and our commitment to respectful, honest service.

To our future campers, please see our reviews on google and other platforms, and you'll see what Gary Self represented is not who we are nor how our campground is run. Mention Gary when you call to reserve and we'll give you a 15% discount.

To other campgrounds, beware of these campers.

Serene Oasis at Watauga Lake

This new campground has it all and is constantly improving! The campsites are set up on a very scenic mountain overlooking Watauga Lake. Every site has a personal campfire and the internet access is top notch (if you need it). Very short drive to hiking trails and swimming. The owners are really welcoming, available and helpful.
