Jellystone Park Chincoteague Island's campsites accommodate pets throughout their diverse accommodation options including tent sites, RV spaces, and rental cabins. The campground maintains clean facilities despite the high volume of visitors, with multiple bath houses featuring laundry facilities. Sites are notably close together, particularly in the primitive tent camping area where spaces are not assigned, creating a somewhat crowded camping environment. Full hookup RV sites include water, electric, and sewer connections, though the camp layout places neighboring sewer hookups directly in front of some sites. The campground's convenient location provides easy access to Assateague National Seashore and Chincoteague Wildlife Refuge, allowing visitors to explore natural areas with their pets.
Tom's Cove Park and Pine Grove Campground both welcome pets with varying amenities. These campgrounds provide strategic access points to experience the region's natural attractions while keeping dogs comfortable. Visitors should be prepared for the island's significant mosquito population, as multiple reviews warn about overwhelming numbers despite daily town spraying. Leash requirements are strictly enforced throughout most public areas including beaches and wildlife refuges. During summer months, the combination of crowded conditions and numerous pets can create noise issues with barking dogs noted in several campground reviews. Guests planning extended stays should note that veterinary services are available in town, though bringing sufficient pet supplies is recommended as campground stores stock limited pet essentials. The proximity to wildlife areas makes proper pet control essential, particularly with wild ponies present on nearby Assateague Island.

This is a well kept, up-to-date campground with lots of variety for places to stay. However, the RV sites are very close, it was packed, noisy, and full of kids and barking dogs. Not quite the nature experience I was hoping for. Bath houses are clean and renovated and nice. Location is just across the bridge from Chincoteague Wildlife Refuge which was awesome.
they have a wonderful pool and are a short distance from chincoteague beach! Great place to stay with family! Sites are big we fit two large tents on one site. They have a water park down the road and fishing off the pier. Don’t forget to stop at Island Creamery for the best ice cream ever!
What a great visit are having. Beautiful location with lots of space for everyone. Great beach and tiki bar. Pools for the family and very pet friendly. We stayed in the ‘big rig’ site within Club Castaway right on the water as we have a 40ft rig. Amenities are clean, staff friendly and helpful. Our dog, Daisy, loved the beach and the dog park and socialization w her pooch friends. Will be back.
The owners and staff are very friendly and accommodating.
Nice quiet campground. Make sure you go down and visit their black swans. Like love to come over and talk to you.
Overall, we lived our time there. Good rates. Just a bike ride from the main street in Chincoteague. Pet friendly. We will definitely go back.
We don’t always pick campgrounds for their spacious sites and scenic views. BUT we do pick them based on the outdoor activities we can do from the campground itself via bike riding or walking. Since we don’t bring a car location is very important to us.
This private campground is in a fantastic location. Waking distance to stores, water slide park, kayaking, fishing/crabbing from bridges and Biking distance to Chincoteague Wildlife Refuge & Assateague Island National Seashore . There is even a complimentary trolley that will take you to the beach during the “in season”.
You can rent kayaks and bikes from this resort. There is a pool, jumping pillow, and playground. The water park adjacent cost an additional fee. They have 3 day passes and after 3pm packages. (You May also get a discount from KOA front desk)
The campground- tight and efficient with a lot of options for staying here from little cabins safari style tent cabins, rental Rv’s, grassy tent area to full hook up rv sites. We had a premium RV site and since we were here off season in late April- the campground was not super busy. Just expect that you will be in very close proximity of your neighbors and it will be loud and boisterous in the evening. Our solution?? Hike and Bike all day so you are exhausted. That way after dinner and a couple of glasses of wine... you really don’t care.
We came here specifically to experience the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge and Assateague Island VA National Seashore and the parks did not disappoint. We biked and hiked the the parks but you can easily enjoy a lot of the sites via car. Just know that pets are NOT allowed. There are Ubers in this area. Here is a link to the trail and park map.

There is a fee of $10 per car for 7 day pass. Bikers and Pedestrians get in free. (The fee gets you into both parks).
Happy Camping! Pamela and Keith
Shad Landing, along with it’s sister park Milburn Landing, make up Pokomoke State Park. It’s just 45 minutes away from the beach at Assateague Island and an hour or so to Ocean City or Chincoteague. The sites are varied- some are more apt to hold smaller tents than larger ones, there are RV sites as well- cabins too. Each loop, with the exception of Waters Edge have full bathrooms with warm showers and flush toilets. Pets are allowed in some loops. The marina/ park office has a well stocked camp store as well as a kitchen that serves pizza and the like. Boat rental are available as well (try the canoe loop trail) There have been years when we stay here instead of hotels at OC- much cheaper and close to more than just commercial crap. Besides the beaches, it’s also close to the truly excellent NASA Wallops Island center that my kids thoroughly enjoy, as well as incredibly awesome food in nearby Berlin and Pocomoke City. Each site provides a picnic table and fire ring. Most have a lantern hook. In season there is a large swimming pool- free for campers. The nature center regularly holds programs and there are a few hiking trails here and in the nearby Pocomoke State Forest.
Great park, awesome amenities. Would definitely go back. Price is not cheap but the amenities make it worth it. Can’t wait until the zip lining courses are back open. Stupid COVID!
Bugs were crazy bad in the dog park and the moisture rich tent areas. Bring bug spray or a flame thrower.
This is our favorite campground! It is close enough to ocean city we can enjoy the beach daily but far enough to relax in the woods! This campground is the small sister campground to frontier town. They have a free shuttle bus to provide transportation to assateaque island, frontier town, and ocean city. Campers here are eligible for discounts at frontier town as well! We tent camp but there are RV sites and cabins as well. There is an arcade, camp store, heated pool, playground, dog park, and mini golfing! The main pavilion has rentals for recreational equipment at no extra cost (hula hoops, balls, etc.) There are also themed weekends and scheduled activities throughout the week! The bathhouses are cleaned many times a day and the showers are spacious enough. The staff here is friendly and welcoming. Each tent site is far enough away from the other that you feel spread out and private. This is definitely a place I recommend to friends and family.
Camping near Chincoteague, Virginia offers sites on both the mainland and the barrier islands, with elevations rarely exceeding 10 feet above sea level across the coastal plain. Summer temperatures average 85°F with high humidity, while winter camping provides milder 45-55°F days with significantly fewer insects. The proximity to both the Chesapeake Bay and Atlantic Ocean creates unique microclimates affecting camping conditions throughout the year.
Kayaking the backwaters: Launch directly from Tom's Cove Park to access prime wildlife viewing areas. "My husband and son kayaked from the campground over to a lovely sand bar off of Assateague Island. They got within very close range of a herd of ponies grazing at low tide, hung out, and enjoyed their private slice of nature," notes Rita M.
Lighthouse viewing: Several campgrounds offer views of the historic Assateague Lighthouse. "Waterfront camping along with good views of the Assateague lighthouse. Closest campground to the annual pony swim," says Heather H. about her experience at Tom's Cove Park.
Winter beach exploration: The off-season offers unique wildlife viewing with fewer crowds. "We only stayed on Assateague for 1 night on our way down the east coast. We camped on the bayside which had a really pretty view of the marsh and large camp sites... We took a ride over to the ocean camp sites and found some horses!" reports Deanna G. from Bayside Assateague Campground.
Night sky observation: The barrier islands offer minimal light pollution for stargazing. "Falling asleep to the sounds of the ocean is one of the relaxing thing there is. Waking to see wild horses each morning is an experience I'll never forget," shares Paully B. from Oceanside Assateague.
Direct water access: The ability to fish, crab, and boat without leaving the campground. "Beautiful location on Chincoteague Island. Basic amenities, but clean and well maintained. We have a 39'ft RV and had no problem with their pull through sites. Bring your fishing rods!!!" advises Julie F. about her stay at Tom's Cove Park.
Diverse wildlife viewing: Beyond the famous ponies, the area offers extensive bird watching. "Pine Grove Campground is also bird sanctuary which adds a bonus to kids," notes Tim S. about the Pine Grove Campground, a pet-friendly option near Chincoteague.
Clean facilities: Recent renovations at several parks have improved amenities. "Shad Landing (and its partner site Milburn Landing) offer enough for you to spend a week close enough to the beaches of Assateague, Ocean City, and Chincoteague to smell the ocean. Sites are medium to large. There is one pet loop that is popular with the RV crowd," writes Bill G. about Shad Landing Campground.
Swimming options: Beyond ocean beaches, several campgrounds offer pools. "This campground is our home base. It's only about 45 min from our home. We love this campground. Staff very friendly when store open and you see staff. Clean bathrooms and handicap accessible, as is the store," shares Cindy S. about Pocomoke River State Park.
Bug preparation is essential: The marshy environment creates intense insect pressure, especially in summer. "Love this place but be prepared for the bugs. Even enjoyed this in the winter," advises Michael W. about Bayside Assateague.
Horse management: Wild ponies actively seek food from campsites. "We waited over an hour for them to lose interest and move on to the next site. We went through this for every meal. It became a real hassle," warns Wendy W. from her experience at Bayside Assateague Campground.
Campsite spacing varies significantly: Some areas offer privacy while others are tightly packed. "You have to drive to Assateague from Chincoteague with your bikes, and then park. One bike beach is off of the Wildlife Loop, and is on pavement the whole way. It is less than a 2 mile bike ride to get there, and there are far less people," suggests Rita M. about accessing less crowded areas.
Seasonal considerations: Winter camping provides unique benefits. "We've camped here twice and have had great experiences! The sites are spacious, the bathhouses are clean, and we really enjoy the river view," notes Shanna S. about Pocomoke River State Park Campground.
Choose sites near bathhouses: For families with young children, location matters. "Our site was close to the bathhouse, which was modest with cold water and vault toilets. Fresh water pump was nearby, as well," shares Wendy W. about camping logistics at Bayside Assateague.
Water activities for all ages: Multiple options exist beyond ocean swimming. "We are kayakers in the warm weather and hikers when its cooler. We have kayaked north to Snow Hill, Md, south to Milburn Landing, west up Nassawango Creek, and Corkers Creek at the campsite," describes Cindy S. about Oceanside Assateague National Seashore.
Educational opportunities: "Camp Cove. Lots of wild horses to see. Remember to bring bug spray!!!" advises Tom C., highlighting the importance of insect protection while enjoying wildlife viewing with children.
Family-friendly amenities: Several campgrounds offer dedicated recreation. "Tall Pines Harbor is a great place for a family with kids. Management was very welcoming — the park does themed weekends throughout the entire year," reports Trey C. about the family atmosphere at Tall Pines.
Site selection guidance: Choose carefully based on your rig size and hookup needs. "Been here several times. 30 amp service available on Acorn Trail and Deer Run. Now water or sewer hookups but there is a dump station at park entrance with a water fillup spot," advises Jason B. about Shad Landing.
Utility positioning: Pay attention to hookup locations when reserving. "We stayed in water view 13 and it was a the perfect site. A little far for the kiddo to be at the park but the view was great, the Wi-Fi worked well, and the pull through site was perfect for our camper (not the best at backing up)," shares William C. about Tall Pines / Chesapeake Bay KOA Holiday.
Road access considerations: Some areas have challenging approaches for larger rigs. "RV sites are very tight. Anything over 35' in my opinion will be hard to get into sites," cautions Jason B. about Shad Landing Campground, providing important information for those seeking pet-friendly camping near Chincoteague with larger vehicles.
