What to do
Waterfront activities: Remote camping sites on Waterbury Reservoir provide an unmatched backcountry experience. "These remote sites are so peaceful. Be sure to launch from cotton brook road if your site r11-27... It was about 30 minutes from the cotton brook launch to the site and was much more doable for all the trips we took bringing our gear in," notes Julia S. about Waterbury Reservoir Remote Sites.
Historical exploration: Little River trails lead to numerous remnants from past settlements. "The hiking trails are really good--actually pretty steep. There are lots of old foundations hidden on the trails that are fun to discover," says Rita M. about Little River State Park Campground.
Winter camping: For experienced cold-weather campers, Smugglers Notch offers unique off-season opportunities. "Stayed at a lean-to site here in March of 2019. Free of charge during off season, you just have to call a couple weeks ahead to reserve and make sure you park in the allotted area. Hike/snowshoe in to your site as the gate is closed and the area is not plowed," shares Ed M.
What campers like
Boat access sites: Paddlers appreciate the secluded waterfront camping. "There are many beautiful backcountry campsites right on the water only accessible via the water. Great local overnight spot with flat tenting, privies, and picnic tables," explains Caitlin M. about Smugglers Notch State Park Campground.
Trail connectivity: Direct access to hiking without driving is highly valued. "This campground is in a perfect spot. About a .3 mile hike to the main trail to climb the mountain," reports sam T. about Underhill State Park Campground.
Tent-only areas: Dedicated sections for tent campers provide a more traditional experience. "The tent only section is really nice too. Facilities are well taken care of, small pool, playground for kids, and the owners are great," notes IAN P. about Gold Brook Campground.

Tips for camping with families
Historical learning: Engage children with the area's past. "We visited here with our 5 kiddos for 2 nights late July 2016. The facilities were clean, the small playground was great, and the small boat launch and beach kept us in the water. The hiking trails are really good," shares Rita M.
Beach options: Waterbury Reservoir isn't the only swimming spot. "We tend to hang at the site more than the beaches as the beaches are very small and full of children. This is a great park to just relax," suggests Hannah H. about Little River State Park.
Child-friendly layouts: Look for campgrounds designed with families in mind. "We had one right next to the playground so our daughter could walk straight to it without having to cross a road. And speaking of playground, it was large and very nice," notes Erin S. about Lone Pine Campsites.
Tips from RVers
Site selection: Choose locations suited to your rig size. "Little river st park wide flat camp sites no hookups limited gen. Use hours 8am/10am and 4pm/6pm. Rough road coming to campground. Very quite. Site could hold big rig we have a 28ft 5th wheel plenty of room for 35/40," advises nicholas G.
Hookup availability: Full-service options are limited but available. "This campground is great. Nice and quiet. Campsites are well spaced. Some of the campsites on the outside ring you need to walk into (a very short distance), but it makes it feel very secluded and less like car camping," says Jess O. about Smugglers Notch.
Generator restrictions: Most dog-friendly campgrounds near Jonesville have strict generator rules. "We stayed on the B side. The bathrooms were clean, the site was well maintained, and the reservoir was a great place to relax after a day of hiking," notes Alison O., who selected a non-generator site at Little River State Park.
