Description

State Park

Utahraptor State Park

In the 2021 legislative session, the Utah State Legislature passed HB 257, which created Utahraptor State Park, located roughly 15 miles northwest of Moab in Grand County.

NOTICE: Utahraptor State Park is currently in the planning phases for major construction and amenities improvements. All areas of this park remain in an extremely primitive state. Please check back with us at a later date for updates on our improvements

This new state park includes popular recreation spots such as the Dalton Wells and Willow Springs areas. Utah State Parks believes that — with proper planning and coordination with partners — we can better protect the area while maintaining its recreational value.

The area is currently undeveloped with only primitive recreation options. We ask visitors to remain patient during the planning process. Construction is expected to begin later this year.

While it is still in the planning process, future park visitors to the area can expect one modern campground, restrooms, office and entrance station, and trailheads for access to the nearby OHV and mountain bike trail systems.

Fee Info

Primitive camping only, while the park is under planning and construction. -A $15.00 Camping Fee, per vehicle, per night, will be required starting May 15, 2022.

Primitive camping will be allowed during construction of new state park facilities and amenities. Access to camping will be available on the Dalton Wells and Willow Springs roads. Camp only in disturbed sites which contain a fire pit (do not build additional fire pits). See below for additional Park Guidelines.

Amazing camping

Absolutely incredible site. Plenty of sites to choose from, easily accessible. It does get crowded on the weekend, but everyone is respectful. Felt very safe here. There are nice pit toilets as well and a dumpster near the entrance. $15 to enter the state park. Willow springs road will take you to arches as well, HOWEVER, absolutely do not attempt unless you have a high clearance 4WD vehicle.

Don’t let the entrance deter you

This place was great. We had initially planned to boondock elsewhere but found this location close to both Arches and Canyonlands and some online reviews that mentioned being good for bigger RVs. When we first rolled in, we saw a lot of toy haulers and other rigs with ORV’s- I thought it was going to be loud and and dusty. I was wrong. We drove further to find a site- our map showed a large loop we could turn around on if we didn’t see anything. The further in we got the better the road became and we found many well auto camp spots with tables and metal fire rings. It’s posted to only camp in spots where there are rings- we found that several people ignored this ¯_(ツ)_/¯ We ended up grabbing. A spot that was essentially a pull through and gave us a stunning view and at least 100 yards from our nearest neighbor. Initially I was irritated by the 15$ fee but thought better of it given the well cared for road, many portable toilets as well as vault toilets throughout the park. I saw a ranger patrol which made us feel safer. We were able to let our dog off lead although as with most desert locations- there were stickers and cactus galore. There is definitely wildlife roaming around. Great place to stay a few days or longer if you’re set up well. We only heard one person running a generator and it wasn’t loud enough to disturb our stay.

Tons of sites, toilets are plentiful, nice location

We got a nice pull through site with a picnic table, fire ring, and near the clean pit toilets at about 5:30 pm. Tons of folks were looking for spots from 6-8. The site was nice, spaced away from others, and very very convenient to Arches NP. $15 fee for the Utahraptor State Park that manages it now.

Easy to get to

Right outside moab. Lots of free camping spots and porta pottys available for usage which is awesome. Right off the highway but still felt in the desert and had a great sleep for being so close to the interstate. Fire pits available to use as well. Only downside is strangers can pull up alongside pretty close to you in middle of night because sites are close together.

We arrived late. Hard time findya site then went off to the north and found a section that was more open.  WiFi was limited so hard to pay fee but hiked up the hill a little and was able to pay.  Beautiful setting.  Great bargain.  I’ll stay there again.

Busy but a good option

We arrived shortly after sunset, having spent the afternoon in Arches. A lot of spots were already taken, but we found a free one about a mile in (couldn’t hear the highway). Sites vary in size and on some it might be difficult to maneuver with bigger rigs. We are a 19’ class B, so it wasn’t an issue for us. There was still a bit of traffic on the dirt road in the evening and in the morning, but the night was very quiet. Would choose this again.

Selection matters here

For BLM camping, this was a great option. Close to town so we could go get our 5% beers on tap (or real beer to go) and some great food at both Moab and Proper, and close to most of the MTB trails we were there for. In fact, at the end of this road is the KlonZo trail network. That's a really nice set of trails if you don't want to drive.

I mention selection because if you show up late, you'll be left with some of the spots close to the road. Those will get noise and dust from the passing vehicles and UTVs.

The spot we got was okay. We arrived on a Wednesday and it was mostly empty. Friday night was when things filled up and people doubled up in some spots. Good way to make friends and share beers. We didn't mind.

If you go about 1 mile in, there are some nicely sheltered spots to the right. The tradeoff is that your view of the sunset is probably blocked.

Pit toilets distributed adequately and a trash dumpster near the exit.

We also had fair Verizon cell coverage.

Accessible, spacious, a bit crowded

This is a great campground with tons of space. There were lots of people and lots of kids the whole time we were there but it’s cheap, close to Moab and all the attractions therein. We will definitely camp here again. Moab has affordable laundry, great food, water fill ups at the visitor center and everything an outdoors person could want.

Last Minute Option

We rolled in late one night and didn’t have any other options to go exploring especially not being from the area. I knew of this area from the last time I visited. We would see people camping out in random spots from the highway and we tried it to and it worked out great. Woke up to hot air balloons in the air around us.

$15 per day With Nothing in Return

Located on BLM Road 142 in Utah, just North of Moab, this area was open/free BLM land.  Even when free, this area was not very "pretty".  The State took over the land and designated it: Utahrapter State Park in early 2023, and began charging $15 per day.. which gets you Porta-Potties, and that's it !  The State has not even performed any maintenance on the roads through the park.  ..Just watch the Video'

Car camping

This campsite was relatively easy to find and had PLENTY of spots to choose from, even arriving at 10:30 pm like I did. My Honda HR-V was able to make it to the campsites near the front, but I would recommend a high clearance 4x4 to get to the sites in the back. There were several clean porta-potties spread out so no worries about having to run to find a restroom. Relatively quiet and private making for a great camping experience!

Great spot close to the parks

15 dollars a day, you could probably get away with not paying the fee, no one validates it. Very cool campsite, very sandy and windy. Tons of spots to choose from, so many you don’t have to worry about them filling up. The cooler spots are further along the roads, you can find some cool ones along big rock formations that offer shade, but less toilets back there and the road gets super bumpy, AWD at least and anything lifted will do better. Lots of porta potties, and one pit toilet we found. All very clean with hand sanitizer and GOOD, fluffy toilet paper. Ground is hard to drive stakes into, so bring some para cord if tenting. Watch out for cactuses and the area is busy so can get loud at night. People like to party. Cool spot.

We stayed here on a Monday night to be as close to arches as possible for a sunrise adventure. Other reviews talked about it being crowded. It probably is on weekends but hardly anyone there on this Monday night. We got a cozy site to ourselves where another car wouldn’t join on a weekend. There were bigger spots that would accommodate probably ten cars if people were trying to squeeze. So close to arches and clean convenient ports potties. Would absolutely stay again. Nice views of red rocks in the morning. $15 per vehicle per night.
