    Blue Mountain RV Park

    Good place to stop

Very nice. Well kept. Basically quiet. Yes it is right on a highway. We had a site away from the road. Sites were close in some spots. There were sites with patios and privacy walls. Pet friendly. View of open vista and prairie dogs in back.

    Blue Mountain RV Park

Small oasis surrounded by tons of sightseeing!

We originally wanted to stay in Mexican hat for a few days, but once we got there we found there was little to no cell service. We looked around for other potential options and found that Blanding had decent Verizon, so we went back up(about an hour away from Mexican Hat). Once we arrived, we were blown away by how nice it was. The park was extremely well maintained, had trees, dog parks, dog trash cans, 2 hot shower and bathroom locations, full hookup service, and park WiFi.

The hosts were extremely nice and gave us some inside information on local petroglyphs, which is part of the reason we wanted to stay in the area.

If you are traveling through the area (to or maybe from Moab/ Arches) this is a must stop over- even if it's just to take a hot shower, dump your tanks, charge your batteries, and use the park WiFi.

    Monument Valley KOA

YAY! Full Hook Ups…BOO! Super Expensive

What can I say - it was pouring rain and our free, dispersed campground was washed out! We called Gouldings, but they were full. The KOA had a pull thru full hook up site. We are trying to camp on a budget, and at nearly $150 a night, the budget was blown. I do want to say that we really really enjoyed having full hook ups and had a chance to catch up on Laundry, so there’s that. Also, it was very close to Monument Valley and we had fun. We were able to scout out our next camping location as well. The Wi-Fi was down for a while and then it started working. It was not busy in the campground. They had a very nice dog park. All in all, we really liked the park, just not the price!

    The View Campground

    Incredible!

Stunning views from every angle. Hike-in for tents but drive-in for campers & RVs. Sunsets and the stars are breathtaking. No pets (at least for tent sites), clean bathrooms, walking distance from hotel/restaurant that they have on site. Must reserve online for peak seasons. If going to monument valley, I highly recommend stopping here!

    Monument Valley KOA

    A smaller KOA

    General: 56-site campground with a mix of 50-amp pull-thru, 30-amp pull-thru, 30-amp back-in, and 30-amp tent/RV sites. All sites have water and electricity.

Site Quality: All sites are gravel and level. As expected in an RV park, there is no separation/privacy between sites. Our back-in 30-amp site had a picnic table, electricity, and water. However, the picnic table was on the opposite side of the water and electricity, which was confusing.

Bath/Shower house: Very clean. Nice hot water and pressure in the shower (turn the hot water all the way to the left to get the hot water going).

Activities/Amenities: Dog park, playground, laundry with three washers and three dryers ($4 per load for both which was very reasonable). Although the laundry did say it was open 24/7, when we checked in, the sheet advised us that the last load of laundry had to be in by 7 pm. There is a store open from 8 am– 8 pm. Horse tours can also be booked from the campground.

We stayed here as we needed to fill up on water and had booked a Monument Valley sunrise tour and the KOA was one of the pick-up sites. We were able to go on our tour and be back before check-out at 11 am. There are nice views from the campground.

    Gouldings RV and Campground

    A drive threw monument valley

After missing out on monument valley on my last Utah trip. I was not gonna miss it this time around. We were able to grab a site day of with no issues. Site was clean and organized, no neighbors around us. Showers were a definite plus! Not to mention the campground wild cats were a riot. Would stay here again, but a little pricey.

    Recapture Reservoir

    Best spot in the area

Beautiful spot. About 2 miles off highway down a paved road. A couple spots are even big rig friendly. Lots of water front spots on dirt/gravel loop. Pet friendly. There is a bathroom but its awful. Beautiful scenery with large boulders and clean water. Okay verizon 5g 3 bars. Not any boat noise but may get worse on summer holidays.

Sand Island Recreation Area — Bears Ears National Monument

Camp under the cottonwoods riverside - Will take you back in time!

You will find this lovely campground just outside of the town of Bluff, UT. Sand Island Campground is located on the north bank of the San Juan River about 3 miles west of Bluff, Utah, on the south side of Highway 191. The hotels in town fill up fast - but this hidden spot is where you want to be if you love being off on your own! At $15 per campsite per night (2 car maximum) price is right and they offer 25 campsites. Keep in mind that the campsites are "first come, first served" and self-register. There are some amenities like drinking water, Picnic tables,Fire grates, &Pit toilets. There is a boat launch that did get regular traffic. What I loved best was the petroglyphs! There are 2 full walls of them and lots to explore down a trail that runs along the river. The sites are fairly small but ours was private and the camping area was near empty when we were there in Sept. You do have to treat yourself to dinner at the Cottonwood Steakhouse while you are there and take time the visit the nearby Bluff Fort. Their home-made rootbeer is the best I have ever had!

Guide to Bluff

Valley of the Gods Dispersed Camping spans 17 miles of dirt roads between Highway 163 and Utah State Route 261 in southeastern Utah, at an elevation of 4,500 feet. This BLM-managed area permits free dispersed camping with sites scattered along the valley floor among towering red sandstone formations. The road is typically passable for standard vehicles during dry conditions, though portions can become impassable after rainfall.

What to do

Visit nearby petroglyphs: Sand Island Recreation Area, located about 20 miles east of Valley of the Gods, features extensive prehistoric rock art panels. "The main attraction is the wonderful Sand Island petroglyphs, one of the best panels in the Southwest. They line a cliff on the north side of the campground. The site seems to have been very popular in prehistoric times, because the petroglyphs go on for about 100 yards," notes Charlotte W.

Explore Butler Wash ruins: Butler Wash Dispersed camping area provides access to Ancestral Puebloan sites. "Found a great spot that was completely quiet and perfect for stargazing. No way to get to Bears Ears National Monument unless I had a 4x4 and I have a Subaru outback," reports Steve M.

Raft the San Juan River: Sand Island serves as a popular boat launch for river trips. Lawrence P. observed, "We saw many groups of people launching rafts and kayaks down the San Juan River, so if in the area for sometime, maybe contact one of the services and go float the river!"

What campers like

Seasonal temperature variations: For summer visitors to Valley of the Gods Road Dispersed, Jason T. notes: "It is hot in July, but cools off at night. Constant breeze, no bugs. Bring shade as there are no trees except for a couple of spots by dry river beds."

Stargazing opportunities: The dark skies around Goosenecks State Park Campground provide exceptional night viewing. Brian P. reports, "Once the moon set that night, the stars were amazing on a beautiful clear desert night."

Road conditions: Most dispersed areas require careful driving. According to Jeff V. at Valley of the Gods, "Don't push your luck if it has rained recently, as the clay softens and becomes slick, packing around tires, and everything else. Plus even if your vehicle can handle the soft soils you'll wreck the road for everyone once the deep ruts dry out and harden."

What you should know

Limited facilities: Most dispersed camping areas have no amenities. At BLM Dispersed on San Juan River, David R. advises: "A little difficult to find the turn off when arriving at night but a fun bumpy road down to the bluff. Beautiful river view when you awake in the morning. Absolutely no facilities but if you're equipped, this is a great spot."

Water accessibility: Limited water sources make preparation essential. Jeff V. notes, "Unless it's raining or just finished there won't be any water. There is precious little vegetation as well, but a fair amount of rock outcroppings to block the wind, which howls come spring and is far more common than precipitation."

Seasonal considerations: April S. found visiting in off-season advantageous: "I came in January, so it was virtually empty, but quite spacious and spread out even for a busy season."

Tips for camping with families

Visit historical sites: The area offers educational opportunities for children. Lawrence P. suggests: "We had a great time hiking near the large rock formations looking at all the Petroglyphs! There are 2 areas that they are found. One area on the North side of Loop B and the other following a trail near the end of Loop A."

Choose campsites with shade: When camping with children in summer, seek out shaded spots. At Cottonwood RV Park, Corvid C. describes "a meticulously maintained park with lots of room, some shady trees, and level sites."

Prepare for wildlife encounters: Children may enjoy spotting desert animals. David N. mentions at Sand Island: "The campground has hundreds of petroglyphs, you can hear the wild donkeys and we saw wild horses on the river bank."

Tips from RVers

Site selection for larger vehicles: When traveling with larger RVs, Lawrence P. advises: "Loop B is dedicated to sizes over 26' as they are not allowed in Loop A. They are all 'first come-first serve'... Some are near the water and others are away."

Dog-friendly campgrounds near Bluff: Most pet-friendly camping options have specific areas designated for pets. At Cadillac Ranch RV Park, Moe F. notes: "Very nice RV park. They have done a lot of improvements so everything is clean and new. All pull through sites, level sites, a new bath house with large showers and laundry facilities."

Internet connectivity: Cell service varies significantly across dog-friendly campgrounds near Bluff. JL reports at Cottonwood RV Park: "Worth noting, however that the work from the road prospects here aren't great - WiFi was a bit intermittent and cell reception was no better."
