Amazing Canyon Rim Camping

Gorgeous Views literally camping on the rim of a 1000 foot high cliff overlooking the goosenecks of the San Juan river below. No designated campsites. Just pick your spot along the canyon rim. Great place for trailers / campers. I wouldn't want to camp here in tent.

Pros:

Easy drive in and pull up to a spot.

Dark sky area so you can get some amazing night photography shots

Close to other attractions including Valley of the Gods, Muley Point (which would also be a fun campsite), Monument Valley (a bit further afield), etc.

The canyon below is stunning and the goosenecks are quite remarkable

Cons:

This is not a site for small children. You are literally camping several feet away from a 1000 foot cliff.

You are on top of a mesa and we had some strong winds blowing across.

The terrain is very flat, but is also rocky. I would not want to set up a tent on the rocks and/or fight the wind with a tent.

The pit toilets are reasonably clean, but only located by the park entrance gate. So if you park further along the rim, you either need your own facilities, you have a very long walk, or you are driving back and forth over the rocky road (disturbing all of the other campers along the way).

The last observation is that while the goosenecks are truly incredible, especially from the main lookout spot, the color of the rocks in the canyon aren't as varied as other places (i.e., compared to Dead Horse Point State Park). As a photographer, I kept hoping the coloring would be more captivating once the light shifted, shadows moved, etc., but that never happened. Go in with the right expectations and you won't be disappointed.

Dope Views

Have camped at Goosenecks many times traveling between NM and WA on the regular. The views here are unparalleled. If you love the desert and various shades of sepia and brick—this is the spot. No shade but it’s lovely, dry desert air, so it’s never too hot…You will likely have neighbors (but not too close usually, with only air and some space between you (so no privacy per se). And even though I don’t like camping much around people or in established spots, I love this place.

Really cool views

$10 admission per night. The canyons and river beneath are very much a sight to see. I really enjoyed staying here. There are toilets but that’s it. The road gets really really bumpy the farther down the left side you go so higher clearance is better. It says no drones but I was way far down on the left and no one could see or hear so oh well. L

Amazing views, rv friendly, mouse traps advised

Cracker spot, not to crowded (1 camper per 100m?) Fire pits provided and lots of pullouts for RV. Sheer cliffs on either side of the camping area is breathtaking.

We have a 28ft and we ventured down the gravel road a couple of hundred m to find a good view. Road is a little rocky (small rocks) so just take it slow. Clearance not a problem but just slow speeds to make sure you don’t pop a tyre. There is a graded gravel section of the campground for those with big rigs not wanting to tackle the rocky road.

We inherited several mouse friends overnight as did our closest neighbours so do bring traps.

One of the great unknown spots

This is easily one of my favorite places in the Southwest. Just beautiful and rarely anyone here. Yes there can be wind but nothing terrible. I've camped here in a tent maybe 10 times and never an issue that bothered me. THE KEY is the drive off road AROUND the edge of the canyon away from the official campground. Plenty of space and you camp right on the edge of the canyon. Incredible views and experience. Just watch where you are walking at night :)  I almost hate leaving this review because I really don't want more people to find out about this place.

Great View but Windy

The title says it all. This campground sure features amazing views but the wind was killing me. I would NOT recommend it for tent camping, but you would probably be more comfortable in an RV or a van. The wind was going from zero to 25pmh several times both nights i was there, and it was particularly windy during the sunsets which made eating outside impossible (sort of defeats the purpose). The site is super exposed - no trees, boulders or anything to hide from the wind, or sun for that matter. Also, not sure why the description says 10 sites. There’s way more - they let people just camp anywhere along the rim. There was probably over 50 campers there. On the positive side - lots of activities close by. On the negative side, besides the wind, some rude behavior… dog poop in a bunch of places that people didn’t bother picking up. Seems to always be the case wherever dogs are allowed, sigh. Flying drones despite the sign saying no drones…

Beautiful View

We enjoyed our stay at Gooseneck State Park in Utah. $10 per day. Pretty good ATT Service. This is a remote location with no water or hookups. You must be fully contained. There are really no food stores nearby either. We parked right on the edge of the goosenecks and enjoyed the sunset and sunrise. There was plenty to do around here, Valley of the gods, House on Fire, Mexican Hat, Moki Dugway, Muley Point, Monument Valley, Four Corners is an hour away and lastly if you’re feeling ambitious, Canyon De Chelly is 2 Hours away, which did make for a long day. We kept our dogs on a leash because the cliffs of the goosenecks were very scary. I would come back in a heartbeat!

Popular camping lot

That means you’ll have plenty of neighbors to make friends with or leave alone, so no need to put up a “taken” or “occupied” sign. — that’s obnoxious and not what camping is about. This spot has a decent approach. Lots of big frumpy rigs, bikers, car campers, not too many tents. Go down by the river to do some more authentic camping. This spot is good for socialization though.

Loved It

This is a really cool place to stay-- state park with dispersed camping. There are sites all along the rim, as well as further back away from the rim.

$5 for day use or$10 for camping.

There are vault toilets and garbage bins. No other amenities for campers, but the day use area has picnic tables and some have shade structures.

No host or attendant when we were here in early November. Self pay at the kiosk, cash only. The path along the rim is rocky and bumpy in spots and we didn’t want to go too far in our motorhome and we easily found a spot away from the day use area but not too far away from the main entrance.

The view down into the canyon is AMAZING. A triple horseshoe bend-- the San Juan river bends in 3 places here, very cool to see!

This park claims to be one of the darkest places in the country and attempts to get people to be courteous with their night time lighting so as not to ruin the night sky for others.

Verizon and ATT had good cell reception, TMobile was strong but roaming.

Rethink it!

Seriously, if you are just even driving by, STOP and check it out! Great camp spots right on the ridge with awesome views and sunsets. Big rigs, stop at the first sites, road gets rougher the further in. Take it slow.

Stunning Views with Good Facilities

One of best camp spots I’ve had. Pictures can’t do justice to how breathtaking the views are, and the campsites are amazingly close to the rim.

I’m typically a tent camper but read in other reviews that this is a windy spot. It is - and I hit it on an especially windy day. I car camped, which was still great and I was glad I’d planned for that option.

The camp host was friendly and the facilities were very clean. I saw the vault toilet area cleaned twice during my short overnight stay. Good fire rings, bbqs, tables and plenty of trash cans. I had cell service enough to check email load apps/webpages briefly. It wasn’t strong service but nice to have if needed.

I look forward to visiting again!

Small utah state park. Sites are on barren ledge above the goosenecks. No water and wind could be an issue here for tents primarily. $5 day use, $10 camping.

Spectatcular View!

Great view, that is really hard to beat. There are only 8 assigned sites with tables and shelters, so get there as early as you can if you want one of them. Otherwise, there is plenty of room around the rim to disperse however you’d like. You can pull in after they close and camp, just use the honor system and deposit your money at the box.

Looking for quiet?

All you can hear is the wind, and it does blow a lot. This is a very quiet place, there were 5 other rigs there camping but there is plenty of space to spread out. There was plenty of traffic in the day use area but if you drive down the dirt road to the left you won’t be bothered by the people just stopping by to take a quick look at the views. There is a vault toilet but didn’t use it, some picnic tables and tent camping area near the entrance. Nearest town is about 6 miles from the site but not much there but a gas station/ 7-11 bring everything you will need with you.

Sleeping at cliffs edge.

Goosenecks State Park is better than Horshoe Bend at Page. You get to walk around at the edge of the cliffs. There are actually more bends here as the name Goosenecks states, On the right are some campsites on the edge with picnic tables On the left are some more civilized sites away from the cliffs with some more right on the edge. There is a double sided outhouse at the beginning of the campground. I was charged a nightly fee but technically I was outside the State Park and on BLM land. There are many sights outside the park. I supported them anyway. If you wait till after 5 pm there isn't anyone there to make you pay. Camp fires are allowed. There is NO water here. You need to bring all that in. The closest town is Mexican Hat to the south and Bluff to the north.

T-Mobile had about 2 bars. AT&T was 0.

Just a beautiful area to rest and relax and plenty to see in the surrounding area.

Out of this world stunning spots, cheap

The goosenecks of the San Juan River are a series of river switchbacks, called goosenecks, 1200 feet below the flat surface of the mesa above, where the state of Utah has established Goosenecks State Park.   The views are very grand, unforgettable.

Camping is$10/night and there are semi-developed spots with picnic tables or you can drive out the bumpy but easily negotiated dirt road and camp as close as you want to the edge of the precipice.  Any size rig can fit; there are numerous large turn-around areas.

I got between one and two bars of Verizon.

Tents *not* advised.  It can (and did) get intermittently very very windy.

Enjoyed it

My 1st stay was early February 2019 and it was 18 and 30mph winds. The van was rocking but I slept like a baby and was the only one there. Stayed again late April 2019 and it was full of RVs stacked against the edge so I parked away from them. Quiet night, warm, not windy at all. Just full of those pretentious RVers with their website plastered all over their rig taking selfies. It's quit the comedy to watch them shoot video(I presume for YT) never going further than the tourist plaque.

Camping with a view!

Looking across the land as you pull in the gate and there is not much to see...until you get to the rim! Camping is first come, first served at the available 8 spots. There is not much shade but there are toilets. Fire rings and picnic tables are about all you will get at these spots and you better bring your own shade. Nothing to block the wind so if weather turning be ready, storms can come in fast and strong here. Low profile tents are best - ground is hard on tent stakes to! Camping is only $10 per site per night if no ranger you can self pay with envelope and dropbox. Enjoy exploring!

Breathtaking Gooseneck.

The view from the top was spectacular! I went to the gooseneck because it was a part of the group tour itinerary. Of all the state and national parks the tour guide took us to, this was definitely my favorite spot. All 30 of us were simply amazed at the view. We enjoyed our dinner while watching the sun set. We didn’t end up camping out as we originally intended to because of rain and storm. But other than that, it was all perfect! There were a couple pretty cool jogging trails along the rim as well. And it was surprisingly very quiet. We were the only people there camping. A beautiful hidden gem!
