Big Creek Resort, Marina, & Campground

One of my favorite local campgrounds

I like this park because it's close to home. It's got a good space between sites and is broken into 3 or 4 areas so you're not just piled in like sardines. You can being 4-wheeled vehicles that have a steering wheel. No sewer hookups, but there is a dump station. Unfortunately, subsequent major floods have caused them to lose much of the tree cover. It's great when camping in groups though, which we do quite often. All sites have views of the lake. They have a really good fireworks display on 4th of July.

    Type of Park: Private-owned

Check In: 4p Check Out: 3p

    Site#79- Back-In

    $35 per night($105 total)

    Water 20/30/50 amp

    Picnic Table with concrete pad

Grass site. No rock or concrete base

👍🏻 Pros: No trees to avoid

On the end of the line so no one is on the"front" side of the camper

Good area for camping in groups

Close to good swimming areas and store

    Close to boat ramp

👎🏻 Cons: Split-level site- table is down a slight hill from parking area. No shade

Across from the cabins on stilts, lake view is a little blocked

Cabins are being refurbished and the equipment and materials are stacked near the site(and some construction noise)

No grill or fire ring at this site

📝 Park Notes: Gates closed and locked from midnight to 6 am on weekends.

Closed at 10 pm on week days.

Can bring golf carts, ATV's(machines with steering wheels, not handle bars)

Dump Station- a little hard to get to for big rigs. Also hard to leave the park from there. You may have to go back into the park to turn around.

Park Store- has fishing bait and supplies, too

Cabins are under re-construction There is a Places Munzee here

    Boat Ramp

Lake Somerville State Park Birch Creek Unit Campground

Nice park with green space between sites

    • Water

    • 20/30 amp(had 50 amp outlet, but only 20& 30 breakers)

    • Grill

    • Fire Ring with adjustable height grate

    👍🏻 Pros:

    • Near the water with a trail to get there

    • Green space between the site and neighbors

    • Good kayaking area

    👎🏻 Cons:

    📝 Park Notes:

    • Park does not have a gate, so it doesn't close

    • Dump Station for each camping loop

    • Restrooms/ Bath House

    • Boat ramp

    • Fishing jetty (pier is closed)

    • This campground is better for winter camping. Great buffer from wind and neighbors. Only a handful of sites have direct access to the water.

    • Lots of trails

    • There are Munzees and Geocaches here

    • Group pavilion/kitchen available

    • 2 group shelters available

🐦 Wildlife:• Birds: Shore birds, egrets, herons, cardinals, mockingbirds

Site 23 was better (stayed in this one twice). Wider, nice view of lake. Not very long, but easier to get into.

    Oak Forest RV Park

    BEAUTIFUL and peaceful RV Park

We’ve had such an amazing time here. There’s multiple dog parks, hammock areas, common areas with fire pits and grills, gardens for the community, and a incredible coffee truck over by the welcome office (closed on Tuesdays). Beautiful and loving community of temporary and long term RVers. 10/10 for Austin

    McKinney Falls State Park Campground

Excellent State Park close to Austin

This park is a great option for nature camping very close to all the attractions of Austin. The sites are spacious and they all have electricity and water hookups (some sites have 50 amps, most have 30 amps). All are reservable and very affordable at $24/$20 respectively, with greater discount if you’re a Texas State Parks Pass holder. We are out-of-staters and found great value in the parks pass! Second nights at campgrounds are 50% off and free admission to all state parks.

The sites are very private and spacious and have nearby hiking trails accessible from the sites. There are several camping loops in the park, most of which have easy access to the Onion Creek hike & bike trail. Booking online is straightforward and check-in is virtually contactless.

We spent time hiking the Homestead and Flint Rock trails and really enjoyed the peace and solitude, knowing we were so close to the metropolitan area. A perfect spot for enjoying the city during the day while staying surrounded by nature at night!

Guide to Warda

Seasonal camping conditions near Warda, Texas fluctuate with the area's humid subtropical climate, where summer temperatures regularly exceed 90°F between June and September. The region sits at approximately 400 feet above sea level in the rolling Post Oak Savannah ecological region. Most campgrounds remain operational year-round with spring and fall offering the most comfortable camping temperatures.

What to do

Kayaking on the Colorado River: Colorado Landing RV & Mobile Home Park offers proximity to the Colorado River, though direct water access can be challenging. "The river ran next to the campground but due to yearly heavy rainfalls, maintaining a canoe or kayak launch is impossible. There isn't anywhere to launch or exit the river so kayaking involves driving elsewhere," notes one camper.

Wildlife observation: The area supports abundant wildlife viewing opportunities. At Thousand Trails Colorado River, "the deer are everywhere, they ain't kidding. And watch where you walk in the grass, the deer left presents," according to a visitor. Many campgrounds feature walking trails where guests commonly spot deer, birds, and small mammals.

Historical touring: The region contains numerous historical sites within short driving distance. "We stayed here for a couple of nights while touring the nearby Shiner brewery and the historic old churches in the area," reports a visitor to Schulenburg RV Park, noting the campground is "within walking distance to downtown, which offers a few pretty good restaurants."

What campers like

Natural shade coverage: Unlike some exposed RV parks, several campgrounds feature mature tree canopies. At Buescher State Park Campground, "there are so many trees that it keeps the Texas sun and heat off you pretty dang well," according to one visitor. This natural shade proves valuable during hot summer months.

Clean facilities: Campers consistently mention facility cleanliness as a top priority. "Bathroom and shower facilities are very clean. RV site electrical and water hook up easily accessible along with the sewer connection," notes a guest at Whispering Oaks RV Park, which maintains a 4.9-star rating.

Spacious sites: Many campgrounds provide adequate spacing between sites. One camper at Colorado Landing RV & Mobile Home Park mentioned, "Sites are about 70' long x 15' wide. Plenty of trees," providing enough room for standard RV setups and outdoor gathering space.

What you should know

Accessibility considerations: Not all facilities meet ADA standards. At Old Town Market & RV Park, "Efforts have been made to make the restroom and shower handicap accessible. The lip going into the women's bathroom is doable I believe for anybody, but coming out the lip is pretty high around 2 inches to 2 1/2 inches."

Site leveling requirements: Several RV parks near Warda require additional leveling. At Flatonia RV Ranch, "Sites are gravel/rock with grassy areas adjacent. Not perfectly level, but we wiggled the trailer around a bit in the spot until we got close," reported one camper who found the adjustment manageable.

Highway noise levels: Some campgrounds sit close to major highways. "Road noise from highway, but not a negative for us," noted a Flatonia RV Ranch visitor, making these locations potentially less ideal for light sleepers despite their convenience for travelers.

Long-term residents: Several parks maintain a mix of travelers and permanent residents. "Many long termers, but they stayed to themselves," reported a visitor to Flatonia RV Ranch, a common situation in RV parks throughout the region.

Tips for camping with families

Water recreation planning: Families should check water access before planning activities. At River Forest Haven, "The tubing is great for people with children who don't necessarily want to go tubing two to four hours... Very short route but water safety should be practiced as it is very deep in some areas."

Playground availability: Not all campgrounds maintain updated play equipment. "I took my granddaughter to the playground and can't use it (old and broken)," reported a visitor to Thousand Trails Colorado River, suggesting families should verify playground conditions before booking.

Wildlife education opportunities: Several parks offer excellent wildlife viewing for children. "There are also deer everywhere. They have off leash area for fur babies," notes a visitor to Thousand Trails Colorado River, creating natural learning experiences.

Tips from RVers

Site selection strategy: For more privacy, choose end sites when available. At Thousand Trails Colorado River, "We had space D25 which is on the outside of the big loop by the river and boat ramp. Lots of space on the door side to the next unit, and nature behind us."

Wi-Fi reliability: Internet connectivity varies significantly between RV parks near Warda. "AT&T reception is LTE and varies by location and time. I had 1 bar to 4 bars at the same spot throughout the day," reported an RVer at Thousand Trails Colorado River, suggesting travelers should plan accordingly for connectivity needs.

Navigational challenges: Some parks have tight interior roads. At Schulenburg RV Park, "It was tight to get down the roads leading to our spot but navigational if you went slow," requiring careful maneuvering for larger rigs.
