    Bois D'Arc Lake Wildlife Area

    Quiet spot on lake

This is a great spot! I stayed at the end near the boat dock and was surrounded on three sides by water. I awoke to the sound of waterfowl and enjoyed coffee in the lake breeze. There was another camper a good distance away.

    Clear Spring

    Excellent Corps of Engineers campground

This campground is exceptionally well managed. The facilities are basic, with bathhouses throughout, centrally located dumpsters, walking trails, and grounds workers constantly working.

The location on Wright Patman lake is awesome. Many of the sites are lakefront, others are in shaded loops within a 2 min walk of the lake shore.

The campground is an easy 15-20 minute drive from Texarkana and there are stores and restaurants closer than that.

    Crow Lake Primitive Sites

No annoying insects, just a place to park

This is just the one campsite, but it's quite large and there's a turnaround which could be used for a second campsite if you have a vehicle that can handle it. The one at the top of the slope is better for larger vehicles though.

I'm not sure if my bus would easily be able to handle going down that slope, but someone drove around it very easily in a Jeep with no trailer.

When you enter the area, you'll see a split in the road. Take the right side and that's where this USACE campground is at.

    Ivan Lake Recreation Area

Permit required, and check in and out.

The first thing I saw was the board. I usually check that just to make sure I know what's going on and it says you need a permit in order to stay here and you also need to check in and out every single time you leave the campground which is just stupid. There's no reason for this aside from they just want to track you.

    Buckhorn Creek

    Beautiful but loud

Me and my partner posted up there on a Thursday evening. There wasn’t another group at the actual campsite that we could see. Despite being ostensibly alone, I do believe there is a few Lakeside properties or perhaps a neighborhood nearby because there were boats going back-and-forth across the water at all hours of the night And several dogs barking to no end.

When we departed in the morning, it took a moment to take a look at the other campsites, many of which had fire pits filled with trash. This could just be a one off, cause we did go, maybe a week or so, after the Fourth of July but there’s also a real possibility that this is a pretty normal party stomping ground. Either way the surrounding area was beautiful and when everything quieted down in the morning, it was incredibly peaceful.

Beware when making a reservation online!

Made a reservation online on our way home from a trip out West. Cancelled the next day due to the National Weather Service forecast for the risk of severe weather for the area. Manager refused to refund our money due to us cancelling less than 5 days of the reservation (duh, we were on our way home) and then argued with us about the weather forecast! Do yourself a favor and stay somewhere else.

Guide to Queen City

Camping spots near Queen City, Texas center around Wright Patman Lake with pine forest surroundings and clay soil terrain. Summer camping often means temperatures exceeding 90°F with high humidity levels between June and September. Seasonal variations affect water levels in Wright Patman Lake, with higher levels typically occurring in spring months after rainfall.

What to do

Disc golf access: Rocky Point offers a course alongside its camping area. "This camp was clean. Has disc golf, trails, a pavilion, a basketball net, boat dock, volleyball net, and a swim beach," notes a visitor who appreciated these diverse recreation options.

Hiking trails exploration: Atlanta State Park Campground maintains several trail systems with varying difficulty levels. "Lots of hiking trails. Great place to swim, boat kayaking and fishing," writes Tammie L. Another camper adds that "The trails are beautiful and if you piece them together can be challenging. These are not wide, take the baby stroller kind of trails."

Wildlife viewing opportunities: Early mornings provide optimal wildlife spotting conditions, particularly for deer which are common. "Pulling in, we were welcomed by a herd of 23 deer grazing in the common areas," reports a visitor to Kelly Creek Park, highlighting the abundant wildlife in the region.

What campers like

Spacious campsites: The camping areas around Queen City provide well-separated sites. "Sites are well separated from neighbors. There are some sites that have full hookups including sewer, but the most desirable sites are in Loop B, some of which have direct views of the lake," notes a camper at Clear Spring.

Lake access: Clear Spring provides direct water access from many sites. "We had a great 3 night stay here in c4. Close to the water and had good views," writes one camper. Another adds, "Stayed overnight in my camper car, 20 feet away from the lake. Very pretty campground that's well taken care of."

Peaceful environment: The campgrounds offer quiet surroundings, particularly during weekdays. "This is one of the prettiest state parks we have had the pleasure of visiting. It is nestled back in a cove by the lake and far away from the hustle of the large and small cities and towns. Quiet, peaceful and beautiful," shares a visitor to Atlanta State Park Campground.

What you should know

Limited cell service: Connectivity varies significantly between campgrounds and carriers. A visitor to Texarkana KOA reports: "I worked during the day using my T-Mobile / Sprint Hotspot. Great 5G signal. AT&T's 5G was horrible at times even though I had full bars."

Seasonal flooding impacts: Spring water levels can affect site availability and access. "The lake still flooded so boat ramp and beach were closed. Put boat in at piney woods up the road," mentions a camper at Rocky Point during high water periods.

Occasional paper mill odor: Industrial operations can affect air quality. One camper notes: "There can be a sewer-like odor that I'm told is coming from a paper mill in New Boston."

Tips for camping with families

Playground availability: Several campgrounds offer dedicated children's recreation areas. At Rocky Point Wright Patman Lake, one visitor notes: "We LOVED our site and all the amenities. We had a spacious site in the D loop, camp was clean, and beach was fun. Highly recommend! Big playground, well laid out sites."

Bug preparation: Insect activity increases during warmer months. "I would recommend bringing a citronella candle there were a lot of bugs at night. it could have also been because we went in August," advises a camper at Atlanta State Park.

Swimming access considerations: Not all swimming areas remain open year-round due to water conditions. "The beach area is okay with a few amenities. The bathrooms have 2 stalls each, 4 total again if it isn't busy they are fine. No family bathrooms in the whole place," reports one visitor.

Tips from RVers

Site leveling challenges: Terrain varies between campgrounds, requiring leveling equipment. "Un-level sites: The sites are rolling grass hills; it is possible to park in a direction that is even (L/R) but may take some finesse," reports a visitor to Kelly Creek Park.

Full hookup availability: Complete services aren't universal across all campgrounds. "We were in site B5 (one of 15 sites out of 124 that have FHU), for 12 days in September and October 2020. This site was not very level but we had great views of the lake out the front and side of our MH," notes a camper at Rocky Point Wright Patman Lake.

Concrete pad quality: Hard surface sites offer easier setup in wet conditions. "Sites are pretty good size with table, grill and fire ring. Pads are fairly level, only took 1 2x12 in the one side, make sure to bring blocks for the rear stabilizers as the pad drops off at the back," advises a visitor to Atlanta State Park.
