What to do
Fishing opportunities: Lake Hawkins County RV Park provides access to clear lake waters. "Nice spaced out sites, plenty of room to enjoy the stay. Limited number of full hook ups but they have a honey wagon. Will definitely come back to this park," notes a visitor at Lake Hawkins County RV Park.
Hiking trails: Tyler State Park Campground offers hiking paths through pine forests. "Sites are good but trails for biking and hiking are great!!" mentions a camper at Tyler State Park Campground. Another visitor adds, "Pine forest and beautiful lake for swimming, paddel boarding (SUP), or fishing. Lots of hiking/mountain bike trails."
Water activities: Swimming and boating options exist at multiple locations. "The lake was perfect and had a nice beach. We were able to rent kayaks and paddle boats. The hiking is not the greatest but it was easy enough for my toddler," comments a family who visited Tyler State Park Campground.
What campers like
Privacy between sites: Lake Bob Sandlin State Park offers secluded camping spots. "It is very thickly wooded which makes even the smallest sites private. We stayed on site 08 which on the map looks like it's on the water but the brush is dense so there is no water view. Sites 10-13 are nice waterfront sites," explains a visitor at Lake Bob Sandlin State Park Campground.
Clean facilities: Mill Creek Ranch Resort maintains well-kept grounds and amenities. "We stayed one night in our RV in this spacious RV resort. My kids had fun fishing and playing on the playground and LOVED that we could rent a golf cart. The pad for the RV was level, with a nice amount of space between sites," reports a family at Mill Creek Ranch RV & Cottage Resort.
Wildlife viewing: Deer and other animals can be spotted at various parks. "One morning, as I was sitting drinking my coffee, four deer walked right through our site!! We had a regular nighttime visit from some bold raccoons, so definitely put your goodies and trash away," advises a camper from Lake Bob Sandlin State Park.
What you should know
Seasonal considerations: Summer heat affects camping comfort. "Great spot found a week out from trip. Just wanted to spend a night there to check it all out. Great trails and swimming area. The shop was closed while I was there and the boat rentals as well. Be careful for raccoons saw a lot of them while here!" warns a visitor to Tyler State Park.
Reservation difficulty: Popular parks fill quickly. "Sites are semi level, full hookup, some shade! Great little lake to fish, kayak, swim and hike! Hard to get reservations because it is so popular! If you get reservations it's kinda like winning the lottery," mentions a camper at Tyler State Park.
Access conditions: Some campgrounds have challenging entry roads. "The road in isn't bad but it's pretty dippy in some spots so if you have a large vehicle take it slow. The directions take you to the Beach. Do not make the left turn. Camp spots are forward and to the right upon entry," advises a visitor to Lake Holbrook Park - South.
