Best Campgrounds near Jamaica Beach, TX

Campgrounds near Jamaica Beach, Texas primarily cater to RV campers and those seeking resort-style experiences along the Gulf Coast. Jamaica Beach RV Resort features full hookup sites, cabin rentals, and numerous amenities including a lazy river, pools, mini-golf, and splash pads. Galveston Island State Park Campground provides beachside camping with options for tent camping, RV sites with hookups, cabins, and glamping accommodations. The coastal location offers easy access to both bay and gulf waters with several campgrounds providing direct beach access or pathways to shorelines.

Weather conditions significantly impact the camping experience in this region, with summer bringing high humidity and temperatures regularly exceeding 90°F. Hurricane season (June through November) requires careful planning and awareness of evacuation routes. "The campsite was azing," noted one reviewer, highlighting the beachside appeal despite seasonal challenges. Most established campgrounds provide water and electric hookups to combat the heat, though primitive camping options exist at places like Follett's Island Beach and Bolivar Flats, where permits are required. Sites generally offer minimal natural shade, with concrete pads being common at developed RV resorts to manage the sandy soil conditions typical of coastal environments.

Waterfront access represents the primary draw for campers visiting the Jamaica Beach area. Several visitors mentioned the beach proximity as a key feature, with one camper noting "Walk to bayside for birdwatching and walk to beach!" Campgrounds in this region typically feature level concrete pads suitable for larger RVs, with most sites offering full hookups including 50-amp electrical service. Family-friendly amenities distinguish the RV resorts from simpler state park facilities, with pools, splash pads, and organized activities being common at private campgrounds. Though sites can be close together at popular resorts, the trade-off comes with extensive recreational options and beach access. Most campgrounds require reservations, especially during summer months and holiday weekends when occupancy reaches capacity.

    Beach camping

    Clean and well maintained beach.

Great beach camping. From the east edge of Surfside Beach city limits up the coast about 6-7 miles is all open beach with Great hard pack for driving any vehicle on. Free. 14 day limit. Trash cans at each beach entrance. Please help keep the beach clean and free. Parks & Rec teams do a fantastic job of keeping the beach clean and maintained. They drove by several times each day. I was here for 2 weeks in February. Good verizon signal. No skeeters until the last few days when it got into the upper 70s and was very humid.

    Sandpiper RV Resort

    Convenient to Visit Galveston!

This was a great spot. Our site was level and easy to get set up. It was off season so the office was closed early when we arrived but they did call us to let us know and it all was pretty smooth. Power, water, sewer great just as expected no surprises or problems. We loved our spot and the proximity to the beach do sunrises and walks to the Seawall. So many options for dining and we did love visiting Galveston.
We went to Seawall Church, the Farmers Market, Kite Shop and enjoyed Happy Hour watching the cruise ships pass by.
The Sandpiper has nice laundry room and community room. And a very nice pool, but it was too cold to enjoy. We would def stay again!

    Galveston Island State Park Campground

Very large RV Pads, short walk to sunrise!

The pad had 50 Amp and Water, there is a dump station as you come in or leave. The pictures on their website don’t show how large and nicely paved the area is. The table is under a large covering and you have plenty of space to enjoy the ocean breeze!
The beach is very nice and quiet (in February) and we enjoyed wonderful sunrises and walking/beach combing. There were a few mosquitos at dusk…but the seems to disappear. The walkway to beach is very smooth and accessible. There are other RV parks in the area that you have to cross the road to get to the beach, we appreciated that it was on the beach! Bath houses were nice. Seemed pretty well kept and recently built. (A couple years maybe?)

Great location but choose your site carefully

We wanted to be close to the city so we could cycle around the sights of Galveston. The cheaper sites are actually on the street, with no fence around them and it was very noisy. We were able to move to a different site though which was great. The bathrooms were clean and well appointed. Happy to recommend a stay here but just be aware of the noise on the street.

    Follett’s Island Beach

    Very peaceful, primitive camping!

We stayed for 6 nights. Don’t be intimidated by staying on the beach! As others have suggested, the sand is packed more like dirt on this beach, which made it very comfortable to drive in. Our truck and trailer were safe throughout the week. We lucked out with good weather.

Things to note: there are trash cans right near the entrance of the beach only. No water near the beach, but if you drive to San Luis Pass County Park, ask the parks staff you’re staying on the beach and hopefully they’ll let you fill up (they let us!). Otherwise, gas stations nearby are good options. This was something that may be obvious to many, but we were very surprised by the moisture on this beach. Everything was totally soaked by dusk each day, and remained wet through night due to dew/ humidity. Recommend a car/rig self-wash right as you leave at TJ’s in Clute/Freeport. As others have noted, just watch the tide predictions, and you should be good. The tide never reached us, not even close.

During the weekdays, we were sometimes the only folks we could see anywhere on the beach, which was cool. It felt nice when other campers showed up at night, tho. They mostly kept a nice distance, so it felt nice and private. It was very often patrolled by parks staff. Highly recommend if you have off-grid power capabilities and don’t mind the humidity. Enjoy!

    Camp Nadur

Quiet Gulf Coast RV Escape with Strong Hookups and Wildlife Access

Camp Nadur is a peaceful RV-focused campground near Freeport, TX, offering a simple but well-equipped base for exploring the Texas Gulf Coast. If you’re looking for a low-key stay close to beaches, fishing spots, and wildlife refuges without the crowds of larger coastal parks, this is a solid choice.

The campground features flat terrain with grassy areas and scattered trees, making setup easy for most RVs. The drive-in access and ability to park directly next to your site is convenient, especially for longer rigs. Sites include 30 and 50 amp electric hookups, water hookups, drinking water access, picnic tables, and fire access. ADA access is also a plus for those needing more accessible infrastructure.

Cell service is a standout feature here. T-Mobile and AT&T 5G coverage are excellent, and Verizon LTE is usable, though slightly weaker. For remote workers or campers who want reliable connectivity for navigation, streaming, or staying in touch, that’s a major advantage.

Location-wise, Camp Nadur shines. It’s just minutes from the Gulf of Mexico beaches and close to Brazoria National Wildlife Refuge. Birdwatchers, anglers, and nature photographers will appreciate the proximity to coastal wetlands and migratory bird habitats. You get both beach access and marshland ecosystems in one trip.

That said, this is primarily an RV park tent campers may find options limited. Also, because it’s near the coast, wind and humidity can be factors, especially in peak summer.

    Camp Nadur

    Perfect and Quiet

We are so appreciative of this quiet, scenic stay. We saw dolphin the first day while setting up and enjoyed daily walks on the beach, egret, pelicans, seagulls, heron and enjoyed watching the activity on the Intercoastal Waterway. Parking was pretty level, we were able to get set up easily. Water and electric just as described and worked great. Loved the table and sunshade.
We could enjoy Sunrise over the water from our back window while sipping coffee, front row seat. I mean, this was perfect!
And the bridge! What an engineering marvel. I can’t imagine how this has changed the island and how the 8 miles of granite seawall has saved the area. It was interesting to read about the bridge and the seawall.
    I’m hoping we can return!

    Brazoria Beach

    Nice!

I think this is a beautiful spot, but be warned—there are a lot of mosquitoes. As soon as I stopped, they swarmed me immediately. It was so intense that I ended up sleeping in my car. A few even made it inside as soon as I opened the door. By morning, my car was completely covered in mosquitoes, and I didn’t step outside at all.

Aside from that, it was a beautiful, foggy night and morning. My time here was brief, but the scenery was lovely. The weather was quite warm.

Guide to Jamaica Beach

Coastal camping near Jamaica Beach, Texas offers year-round access with distinct seasonal challenges beyond just hurricane season. Primitive beach camping options provide alternatives to the developed RV parks, with compacted sand along certain stretches making vehicle access possible without four-wheel drive. Winter temperatures typically range from 50-70°F while spring brings milder conditions before summer heat intensifies.

What to do

Fishing from dedicated piers: San Luis Pass County Park features lighted fishing paths and boat docks. "This is a great place if you want to fish. No boat needed. They have a lighted fishing path, boat docks and launches," notes Jeannette V., who visited the park.

Beach activities beyond swimming: At Dellanera RV Park, beach access is steps away from camping sites. "The beach is a short walk from campground," explains James P. who enjoyed the recently remodeled beachside facilities. This section of beach features lifeguard service during peak seasons.

Birdwatching on the bayside: Several campgrounds offer bayside access for wildlife viewing. "We loved our stay at Galveston Island State Park at the Bayside sites," says Ashley C. "During the day we took our inflatable boat out on the bay, went fishing (no license needed at a state park) and went to the Oceanside beach."

Free beach camping: Follett's Island Beach provides no-cost beach camping without reservations. "Free beach camping, No reservations needed! We went on a weekend late July 2021, NO PROBLEM finding space," explains one camper who appreciated the spaciousness and sound of waves.

What campers like

Renovated facilities: Galveston Island State Park Campground has undergone significant improvements in recent years. "Beach side is very nice since being remodeled. Great back in sites. Nice electrical and water service towers at sites. Great walking paths," notes James P. who appreciated the recent updates.

Private bathrooms: Several RV parks offer individual bathroom facilities. "They have clean port-a potty's bc the storm busted their pipes. They were clean and convenient," mentions Gina & Memphis C. who stayed at Dellanera RV Park.

Diverse fishing opportunities: Many campers highlight fishing variety in the area. "We camped here over New Years. The RV circle doesn't have a bathroom, so we had to drive over to the tent circle each time, but those bathrooms and showers are really nice. The view on the far side of the circle as you enter is spectacular, looking over the water on the bay side," shares Julie B. about Galveston Island State Park.

Winter camping comfort: The area offers comfortable winter camping conditions. "We spent 2 weeks here during the winter. It's a really quiet spot with a few other RV's here and there in the beach. We have AT&T and cell service was excellent," reports Will J. who camped at Bolivar Flats Dispersed Camping.

What you should know

Permit requirements: Some beach camping areas require permits. "Also you need a beach pass it's only $10 as a beach employee drives around and check for your sticker," advises a Bolivar Flats camper. Permit costs and enforcement can vary seasonally.

Wind conditions: Coastal wind affects the camping experience significantly. "We had a constant 15mph wind, so awnings were flapping, and your car and camper get covered in a salty residue," notes Craig F. who stayed at Dellanera RV Park despite the challenge.

Insects at dusk: Mosquitoes can be problematic in certain seasons. "The only downside? The mosquitoes!! Right at dusk they attacked with a vengenge. Be prepared for that!" warns Ashley C. about Galveston Island State Park.

Beach debris varies by location: Different beaches have varying cleanliness levels. "North part of island has LOTS of debris, dead trees, branches, etc. No trash cans or porta pottys either," observes a camper at Follett's Island, highlighting the importance of location selection.

Tips for camping with families

Look for parks with splash pads: Jamaica Beach RV Resort offers multiple water features for children. "We enjoy the lazy river, putt, putt, and kayaking on the bay. It is an easy walk to the beach," mentions D. Scott W. who appreciated the family-oriented facilities.

Consider off-peak timing: Visiting during weekdays reduces crowds substantially. "We stayed Monday-Friday and were the only RVer there Thursday night," reports a camper at Bolivar Flats, noting the dramatic difference from weekend occupancy.

Pack shade structures: Beach camping offers little natural protection. "Recommend some type of canopy or awning, Texas Sun is HOT! Plan ahead, stores are few and far between," advises a Follett's Island camper who visited during peak summer heat.

Beach location impacts swimming safety: Not all beaches permit swimming. At San Luis Pass County Park, "They have a beach but no swimming is allowed due to deadly rip currents. Not far to a beach that you can swim from," explains Jeannette V., highlighting the importance of researching safety conditions.

Tips from RVers

Concrete pads ensure stability: Galveston Island KOA Holiday offers well-maintained sites with concrete pads. "The RV sites were well-maintained and spacious, with clean concrete pads that provided easy access for our motorhome," notes John E. who appreciated the stability this provided.

Consider distance to bathhouses: Facility locations impact comfort for partial hookup camping. "A real downer for us was that the bath house was far from our site. We had a pop-up so that was inconvenient," shares John M. about their experience at Jamaica Beach RV Resort.

Weekend noise levels vary drastically: Beach camping areas can transform from peaceful to lively. "The weekends are loud and busy, during the week it calms down and gets quiet," observes a camper at Bolivar Flats, suggesting scheduling flexibility for those seeking tranquility.

Sand conditions affect access: Not all beach areas require specialized vehicles. "Sand is not soft so no 4x4 required. You have to be self sustained since there is nothing here...just you and the gulf," explains Stefan H. about Follett's Island, addressing a common concern for RV owners.
