Camping near Proctor Lake

Proctor Lake in central Texas offers several established campgrounds with varied amenities for both tent and RV camping. The area includes Corps of Engineers sites such as Sowell Creek, Copperas Creek, and Promontory, which provide water access and boat ramps. Most campgrounds feature electric hookups, water connections, and picnic tables, with some offering full hookup sites for RVs. The surrounding region also includes smaller community parks in nearby towns like Dublin and De Leon that accommodate campers looking for alternatives to the lakeside options.

Camping is available year-round at most Proctor Lake campgrounds, though Promontory operates seasonally from April through November. Sites at Sowell Creek and Copperas Creek campgrounds can accommodate larger RVs with 50-amp electrical service and sewer connections at select sites. Concrete pads at many sites help with leveling, though summer heat makes shade trees a valuable amenity. Water quality varies by location, with some campers noting water with an unpleasant odor. A review observed that "the sites have lots of shade trees with a view of the lake. Sites are not on top of each other, but no type of barrier between sites."

Lakefront camping represents the primary draw at Proctor Lake, with fishing opportunities frequently mentioned in visitor feedback. Several sites along the shoreline provide direct water views and easy access for anglers. The fishing quality receives consistent praise, with hybrid striped bass being a popular catch. Campground maintenance varies between locations, with some visitors noting clean facilities while others report issues with restroom cleanliness or overflowing trash containers. Reviewers frequently mention the peace and quiet, particularly during weekdays when fewer campers are present. According to one camper, "We loved our stay at Copperas Creek, so quiet and peaceful. During the week we were one of two trailers in our area. Fishing is great off the nearby fishing dock and a lot of people came with boats."

Rockin' K RV Park and Horse Motel

Cozy, Quiet and Easy to Find - great location

Easy to find on 281 heading to Hamilton.  Hico is a perfect place to stop and explore.  A TX historical treasure with the Billy the Kid Museum downtown!   I enjoyed the peace and quiet while staying here at great rates.  The host was incredible, available and gave us space! Love the cowboy grill!   Heading over to the farm area - my kids got to feed the mini goats and mini donkey- very fun at Tiny Town at GSD Ranch (their sister property with cabins to rent next door)! We will be back!

    Lake Brownwood State Park Campground

Texas state park built by CCC

Site 69 not level(68 looked better). Both are on green space facing the lake(large grassy area that comprises the beach). Showers old but but great hot water. Flush toilets, walking trail along lake, cabins also near lake. Pretty buggy(gnats/flies--did not see mosquitos). VERY quiet(we were also the only campers in this area).

    Dinosaur Valley State Park Campground

    Amazing!

It's fascinating to see multiple dinosaur footprints along the river in this park. Only intended to spend one night in the campground, but due to high winds warnings, we decided to stay another night. Very nice campground with shaded paved sites. Some sites are short, so if you have a long rig you may want to call. Sites have 30 amp, water, picnic table & fire ring. Nice clean restrooms & showers. Would definitely stay again if in the area.
