Pace Bend Park - Lake Travis

One of my favorite spots in Texas

Pace Bend is one of my most favorite places to camp in Texas.

Not far from the old (and new!) Backyard (a great place to see live music in the live oak capital of Texas), Pace Bend is a quick drive away. A perfect spot to pitch a bunch of tents, jump off cliffs, swim and barbeque. Maybe 45 minutes from downtown Austin (without traffic).

I won't lie the cliff diving kinda freaks me out. Be careful is all I'm saying!

There are several primitive campsites throughout the park with picnic tables, grills and toilets. Additionally there are 20 RV hook-up type sites that offer running water, electricity, restrooms and showers.

    Son’s Blue River Camp

Our Family loves Son’s River Camp!

We stayed in one of their air-conditioned glamping cabins. It was very nice and clean and the AC stayed very cold. They have private, lockable, full bathrooms right behind the cabins. The place is very pretty and the staff friendly. We loved tubing and kayaking the San Marcos River! It’s a great getaway!

    Son’s Geronimo

    Great family experience!

We had a fantastic time at Son’s Geronimo! Their glamping cabins are super nice and had everything we needed including AC, WiFi, full kitchen, fire pits, hammocks etc. We have a family of 6 and the setup was perfect: 2 queen beds and 2 twin beds. The property itself pretty large and has a lot of creek frontage. We kayaked, paddle paddle boarded, swam, fished and more! They also have lots of amenities: 2 pools, 2 hot tubs, volleyball court, basketball court, game room, horseshoe pits and more. We will definitely be back!

La Hacienda RV Resort & Cottages

La Hacienda RV Resort and Cottages + Lots of Amenities

I'm always on the lookout for new campgrounds nearby my town. It's nice to have a few places to escape to for a quick day or weekend trip. I searched on thedyrt.com for campgrounds nearby and noticed a group of listings near Lake Travis in an area called Hudson Bend. I decided to check them out.

If you are looking for a short, mid or long-term place to RV camp or cabin camp near Lake Travis on the Hudson Bend penisula this might be your best option.

The facilities are modern, clean and offer many amenities. And the people that I talked to that were staying at the park seemed to be friendly and happy with their choice of facilities.

At the entrance there is an office that is open during typical business hours 9-5. Next to the office there was a small pool and courtyard. And next to the pool was a group meeting room.

The park offered a variety of options from short, mid and long-term stays. One gentleman that I met and talked to said that he was a snowbird and had stayed at the park for the past four years every summer. This appeared to be the norm.

There are RV sites that offer back-in parking and drive-through parking. There are also little multi-color cabins that can be rented. The grounds looked like they were well taken care of. There was some open green space and what appeared to be a fenced dog walking area. Each of the RV sites offered a picnic table and electric and water hookups.

The only downside to this RV park was that it was not located directly on the shore of the lake. To access the lake one must drive down the road and visit the marina. Also, the park is rather large, so some might feel there is a lack of privacy. I wouldn't say that this park has great access to nature, it is more of a modern RV park.

Overall, if you're a mid to long term vacationer you might really enjoy this site. If you're looking for access to nature, you might look elsewhere.

Canyon Lake Military - Randolph AFB

We love it here. Not for everyone.

We started with day passes, then graduated to renting out the loft cabins, then tried tent camping, and eventually and recently parked our travel trailer in the reservable RV spaces. All in the same vicinity. Made great memories at each stay.

Pro’s: Best rate in town for military (active, retired, $ disabled). Water is beautiful. Fishing can be fantastic. Lots of water activities available for rent or bring your own. Pet friendly, Great for families, most people are very respectful and wonderful to talk to. Good food and stores nearby. Lots of wildlife. Quiet. Close to town and short drive from San Antonio.

Cons: Hard to get ahold of staff to make reservations. Market is extremely expensive and staff isn’t very friendly. Lost and lots of fire ants.

We recommend it to all of our friends and family and bring them often. We love staying in the loft cabins. Some are pet friendly. We have stayed in the mobile homes on the other side of the lake once but that was not a great experience as our things were stolen off our table and covered patio (on Veterans Day) and they were only left unattended for 15 min or less. The mobile home wasn’t very nice but functional at least.

Guide to Fischer

Canyon Lake cabin accommodations are spread across several sites within a 15-mile radius of Fischer, Texas, where elevations range between 900-1,100 feet in the Texas Hill Country. Seasonal temperature variations impact cabin availability, with summer temperatures regularly exceeding 95°F while winter nights can drop below freezing. Cabin camping options vary significantly in amenities and access to water recreation opportunities.

What to do

Hiking at Pedernales Falls: Access multiple trail options ranging from easy family walks to more challenging routes. The trails showcase classic Hill Country terrain with opportunities for wildlife viewing. "Lots of hiking trails here. Good swimming. The falls are pretty. You can walk upriver from the falls, bouldering for quite a long way," notes Emily M. about Pedernales Falls State Park Campground.

River activities: Explore multiple water recreation opportunities with rental equipment available on-site at several cabin locations. "They rent tubes, rafts and kayaks with shuttle service. Nice clean big pool. Has 58 full hookup sites also rental cabins," explains Mike B. about the Rio Guadalupe Resort & RV Park.

Family gaming: Many cabin locations offer additional recreational activities beyond water sports. "We took a walk through the campgrounds and wow! Clean, organized, super maintained!!!" reports one visitor to Lazy L & L Campground, which features horseshoe pits, volleyball nets, and other outdoor games.

What campers like

Cabin proximity to water: Many cabin sites are strategically positioned for water recreation access. "Unbelievable views. This COE campground is amazing. We stayed in site 66 right on the water. There are great spots everywhere you turn," explains Tim M. about Potters Creek Park.

Natural setting: The scenic environment surrounding many cabin sites enhances the experience. "Beautiful new park!! This is a little slice of heaven in canyon lake between sattler and Startzville about a block from the lake," reports Blake B. about B2 Hideaway.

Organized activities: Seasonal events add value to cabin stays at certain locations. "Each weekend they have planned activities for the kiddos. Most of these activities occur on Saturday. Our weekend was Carnival Games and Halloween. The carnival was cute little games set up for the kids to play with candy as prizes," describes a camper at Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park.

What you should know

Reservation requirements: Most cabin sites require advance booking, particularly during peak seasons. "Make reservations months in advance. Overall great park," advises Chris C. about cabin availability at local campgrounds.

Site selection matters: Consider location within each property for the best experience. "When booking, there is an option to choose your specific site for a $15 fee. My advice is to pay the $15 and choose a site close to the Hill Country Hall and the waterpark," recommends Ashley C. about Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park.

Seasonal considerations: Weather patterns impact cabin comfort and activities. "I would say avoid July if possible and don't sleep with food in your tent," warns R.W. about summer camping at Pedernales Falls State Park, where temperatures can exceed 100°F during peak summer months.

Tips for camping with families

Pool access: Many cabin sites feature swimming pools as alternatives to river swimming. "They have a large pool area with cafe and snacks. The property is large and spaces are spread out throughout the park," notes Laura H. about Summit Vacation Resort.

Wildlife viewing: Expect to see local wildlife near many cabin sites. "Small deer herds would move through the park each evening. Many of the campers feed them corn and they know the sounds and come running out of the hills," shares Laura H.

Multi-generational options: Different cabin types accommodate varying family needs. "Good sized shady fenced in dog park in the back with a picnic table. RV campers have full access to the Summit compound which includes tubing shuttle, pool, tennis, putt putt golf," explains Levi B.

Tips from RVers

Site dimensions: Be aware of navigation challenges at some cabin sites. "The roads getting in and out of the place have restrictions and the trees hang very low on the narrow roads. Not meant for more than double axle," cautions C&J F. about Camp Huaco Springs.

Accessibility considerations: Terrain varies significantly between properties. "The sites are level but you don't come here for the sites - it's the water park or for the activities in the Hill Country. The back in sites at the back of the park actually give you the most room," advises Jeff H.

Amenities inventory: Bring specific supplies based on cabin type. "Bring your hiking boots and swimming suit," recommends Shelly S., highlighting the importance of appropriate gear for activities near Pedernales Falls State Park cabins.
