Best Dog-Friendly Camping near El Paso, TX

Franklin Mountains State Park Campground welcomes dogs throughout its tent and RV sites with standard leash requirements. Most pets enjoy the open space and hiking trails, with only five RV sites available featuring electric hookups and picnic tables. Fort Bliss RV Park provides three separate dog run areas for military ID holders and their pets, offering full hookup pull-through sites with concrete pads. The park remains exceptionally clean with military ship-shape maintenance standards. Road noise from Highway 54 is noticeable at some sites, but the park itself maintains a calm atmosphere. El Paso Roadrunner RV Park accommodates pets in its compact sites with full hookups, though spaces are quite close together making it better suited for shorter stays rather than extended camping.

Hueco Tanks State Park Campground offers year-round pet-friendly camping with water and electric hookups for both tent and RV campers. Pets must remain on leash while exploring the designated trail areas. The small fenced pet areas at Fort Bliss provide convenient exercise opportunities, though dogs must be attended at all times. Most campgrounds near El Paso require pets to be leashed at all times when outside vehicles or tents. The desert environment presents specific challenges for pets, including hot ground surfaces during summer months and potential wildlife encounters. Paved areas around Franklin Mountains can become extremely hot during midday, making morning and evening the optimal walking times for dogs. Water conservation is important at these desert campgrounds, with limited facilities for pet washing or cleaning.

    Gap Tank dispersed camping

    Still lonely desert, still awesome

I tent camped at Gap Tank again in January 2025. Awesome time again. It was actually cold then. The sky was dark at night and we couldn’t see any electric lights. Kind of cool so close yet so far from El Paso. No border problems. No javelinas this time, just a jackrabbit. Gap Tank was dry but nearby Mesquite Tank had water and even a little ice on the edges.

BLM Dispersed camping along B059 New Mexico

    4 Days of Dispersed Enjoyment

So the road in is at the 151 Mesquite Exit off IH 10. First 2 miles were blacktop, then 2 miles of 2.5 vehicle wide gravel road then 2 miles of single vehicle gravel road. Several turnouts for camp sites with many having rock fire rings.

Lots of dove and some quail.

A few cows in the area.

Lots to see if you get out and walk the area. Several hiking trails into the Mountain range.

Light noise to the south from El Paso/IH 10 to the West but not much to the East looking into the canyon or North. Saw many stars and satellites.

    Would stay again.

Light traffic during sunlight by hikers.

    Quite otherwise.

Sites are not level so be prepared

    El Paso Roadrunner RV Park

    Served its purpose

Had to make an unexpected stop in El Paso. Was thankful for a place to pull in. Full hookups. The pad area is well maintained; perimeter areas not so much. Good for a basic, utilitarian stay. Within walking distance to Rudy's if you want some good Texas BBQ.

    El Paso Roadrunner RV Park

Everything you need for an overnight.

This place was great for an overnight stay. The sites are level dirt, asphalt drives and FHU sites. The price point is excellent (<$50/night for FHU pull-thru). The campground does offer weekly and monthly rates. We just don't like being packed in like sardines being only 3ft from your neighbor on either side. But, they have everything you could need, bathhouses, 24hr laundry, Campground Store, areas to walk the dog. We'd stay here again if passing through El Paso for sure!

    Fort Bliss RV Park

    Ft. Bliss RV Park

Pretty good RV Park. All sites are paved and level. Most are pull thru as well. No internet or cable at the sites. Close to downtown El Paso.

    Hueco Tanks State Park Campground

    Awesome!

Stumbled upon this Texas State Historic Park looking for something around El Paso. Called and captured the last site available for our desired timeframe. What an awesome camping area with a bonus of being able to explore the pictographs on both a self-guided and guided tour. Definitely worth a visit. Just come prepared to stay on site for a few days. They close the gate at 6pm come hell or high water!

Guide to El Paso

Franklin Mountains State Park sits 7,192 feet above sea level, overlooking El Paso and offering multiple camping options for outdoor enthusiasts with pets. The park's Chihuahuan desert landscape features distinctive mountain terrain with significant elevation changes and rocky trails. Temperatures can range dramatically between seasons, with summer highs regularly exceeding 100°F while winter evenings may drop below freezing.

What to do

Mountain hiking trails: Franklin Mountains State Park offers extensive trail systems with varying difficulty levels. "There are great developed trails, but LOTS of scree, so can be slippery going up, definitely slippery hiking down -- take hiking poles," notes Mark M. from Franklin Mountains State Park Campground.

Historical site exploration: Visit ancient pictographs at Hueco Tanks State Park. "We stayed in the campground and did the self guided hike the first day, then decided to book a tour for the next day. Both were well worth doing and the guided tour was only $5 p/person and lasted about 3 hrs," shares Moe F. from Hueco Tanks State Park Campground.

Wine tasting: Sombra Antigua Winery combines camping with vineyard exploration just north of El Paso. "They have a large outdoor covered wine tasting area that allows dogs. An excellent wine sampling set helped choose a good wine," reports Arthur K.

What campers like

Desert solitude: Many sites offer quiet spaces away from crowds. "It is a safe, clean, and lovely place. It even has sites where, if you have four wheel drive you can go and be very isolated. I loved this place!" writes Tiffany Ann G. about Franklin Mountains.

Pet-friendly facilities: Gleatherland provides comfortable options for pet owners near Hueco Tanks. "Remote desert camping with plenty of amenities. From primitive camping for $5/night to limited RV hook-ups (gray water, fresh water, electric), yurt & trailer rentals," explains Charlie O.

Night sky viewing: The dark skies around El Paso's camping areas provide excellent stargazing. "At night I could see so many stars, and in the morning I could see all the way across the Tularosa Basin to Lincoln National Forest, probably 80 miles away!" reports Craig G. from Aguirre Spring Campground.

What you should know

Reservation policies vary: Many campgrounds operate on first-come, first-served basis. "Arrived tired and looking forward to relaxing. You can only book one of 3 sites online at hipcamp.com. All 3 sites booked," warns Dave B. about Sombra Antigua Winery.

Gate access restrictions: Some parks have strict entry hours. "Gates locked from 1700-0800. They give you the padlock combo for entry/exit but took a couple minutes to figure out how the gate latch worked particularly at night (needed flash light)," mentions Mark M. about Franklin Mountains.

Site limitations: Mission RV Park offers convenient urban camping but with constraints. "Most sites are uneven and short. BLM recommends nothing more than 23' long," notes Mark M. about suitable vehicle sizes for certain campgrounds.

Tips for camping with families

Consider seasonal weather effects: Plan family activities for cooler parts of the day. "Beautiful weather December (76°)," shares Mark M., highlighting that winter months can be ideal for family camping near El Paso.

Pack extra water: The desert environment requires significant hydration planning. "We brought our own 5 gal of water and were fine for 3 nights," advises Mark M. about preparation requirements.

Educational opportunities: Aguirre Spring Recreation Area and Campground offers learning experiences. "Met some BLM peeps who were very nice, helpful and provided great information re: geology of the area and other points of interest," says Mark M.

Tips from RVers

Size limitations matter: Many pet-friendly camping areas near El Paso have strict vehicle length restrictions. "Only vehicles up to 23 ft," confirms Christopher P. about Aguirre Spring Campground.

Level site challenges: "Parking for sites is SLANTED, very few flat! 1 bar Verizon. Gorgeous here but tough in a camper van," warns Lucy P. about Franklin Mountains, highlighting the importance of leveling equipment.

Military discounts available: Fort Bliss RV Park provides excellent value for eligible campers. "This facility is limited to DoD agencies only. Costs range from $18-25 depending on your status," explains Michael C.
