Best Dog-Friendly Camping near Socorro, TX

Several pet-friendly campgrounds serve the Socorro area, with Mission RV Park offering full hookups and a dog exercise area at the southern end of the property. This established RV park accommodates both tent and RV campers traveling with pets. Spaces are fairly close together but include trees that provide welcome shade during hot Texas days. Fort Bliss RV Park maintains three individual dog parks within its military campground, though access is restricted to active, retired military members, dependents, and escorted relatives. El Paso Roadrunner RV Park, located within driving distance of Socorro, provides pet-friendly accommodations with level pull-through sites that can accommodate big rigs.

Hueco Tanks State Park Campground permits pets in designated camping areas though restrictions apply on hiking trails. The Franklin Mountains State Park Campground offers more natural surroundings for campers with dogs, featuring picnic tables and fire rings at each site. Highway noise affects some campgrounds in the region, particularly Fort Bliss RV Park which sits along Highway 54. Sites at Mission RV Park include full hookups, picnic tables, and access to an indoor pool and hot tub open until 8pm. Many reviewers note that staying at these parks requires tolerance for traffic sounds, though accommodations are generally clean and well-maintained. Most campgrounds enforce standard pet policies including leash requirements and waste cleanup expectations.

    Mission RV Park

    Not as expected

We checked out the website prior to booking and were planning on staying for a full week, which luckily didn’t pan out. When we checked in we were told we could only stay a night, despite having made a week-long reservation. Understandable given the circumstances, but it would’ve been prudent to inform of that fact on the website. The receptionist was helpful and gave us a number to another rv park in the proximity, which was sweet of her. The park seems to have good amenities, and there is a little dog park at the end of the lot and a pool by the office, but it is right next to a truck storage facility and right by the I10, so it isn’t the most tranquil. The website is slightly misleading, and I don’t think I would stay here more than a night or two.

    El Paso Roadrunner RV Park

    Served its purpose

Had to make an unexpected stop in El Paso. Was thankful for a place to pull in. Full hookups. The pad area is well maintained; perimeter areas not so much. Good for a basic, utilitarian stay. Within walking distance to Rudy's if you want some good Texas BBQ.

    Gleatherland

    Many amenities , great location

Hueco Tanks is a very small Texas state park and we couldn’t get a campsite. We were extremely pleased with what Gleatherland offered us. Great hot shower, internet, a dump station and campsite hook ups for our RV. The hosts are very friendly and accommodating. Really enjoyed our stay and the Ranger tour of the pictographs in the park that is so close by.

    Fort Bliss RV Park

    Nice military park, okay location

Nice park with about 130 pull thru spots. It is very crowded however and with a location near a highway it is nothing to write home about. Small park, 3 fenced in dog areas, and a laundry facility. There is a "family community room", but that and the shower/bath house have been closed due to covid.

    Franklin Mountains State Park Campground

    Good trails

No amenities like electricity, water or dump stations. Great for walking, cycling, birding. The only camping sites in the metropolitan area in Texas. Sites are semi level and gravel. Great for meditating

Guide to Socorro

Dispersed camping opportunities near Socorro, Texas are limited due to the predominantly urban and private land ownership in the immediate area. Most camping options for visitors to Socorro are located within a 30-mile radius in neighboring El Paso or just across the New Mexico border. Winter temperatures in this Chihuahuan desert region typically range from 30-60°F, while summer temperatures regularly exceed 100°F with minimal shade at most camping facilities.

What to do

Explore pictographs at Hueco Tanks: Located about 30 miles from Socorro, Hueco Tanks State Park Campground offers access to ancient rock art and distinctive geological features. A permit system limits daily visitors to protect the cultural resources. "About two or three miles before the park, you will be stopped and questioned regarding your intent. The attendant then radios the park registration desk to inform of your pending arrival. Once registered, you will be sent on to a 10 minute orientation," explains one visitor.

Mountain hiking in Franklin Mountains: The extensive trail system at Franklin Mountains State Park Campground offers diverse hiking opportunities with desert terrain challenges. "Has lots of hiking trails and scenery. The rv parking is small only has 5 sites and no amenities. Be cautious if you have a big rig the spots are not very long and are pull in pull out," notes a camper who stayed in the park.

Budget-friendly overnight casino stay: For those traveling through the area, Sunland Park Racetrack & Casino offers basic RV accommodations. "Water, electric and dump station for $15/night. It is just a parking lot though. The steak house was excellent and the staff are all friendly and helpful. There are 6 RV sites on a first come first serve basis," reports a recent visitor.

What campers like

Desert camping with amenities: Gleatherland provides an affordable alternative near Hueco Tanks with various accommodation options. "From primitive camping for $5/night to limited RV hook-ups (gray water, fresh water, electric), yurt & trailer rentals, to a beautiful home Airbnb. Only 5 miles drive to Hueco Tanks & 20 miles from East El Paso. Quiet nights with low light pollution for amazing stargazing opportunities!"

Convenient El Paso location: El Paso Roadrunner RV Park offers urban camping with practical amenities. "Easy on off of interstate 10, service road on both sides of 10 with easy u turns from side to side make it easy to navigate town. All kinds of great restaurants and shopping. Campground sites are tight, but adequate, you can see Mexico across the Rio grand, very beautiful at night," says a reviewer.

Indoor recreation options: Some campgrounds provide facilities for use during extreme weather. "They told us about some local attractions that did not disappoint! You are right off the highway, but the campground feels very safe all things considered. Everything is paved and feels super level. They also have an indoor pool and hot tub that are open until 8pm!" reports a camper who stayed at Mission RV Park.

What you should know

Limited sites at state parks: Reservations are strongly recommended during peak seasons. Franklin Mountains State Park has minimal RV capacity with challenging site configurations. "Parking for sites is SLANTED, very few flat! 1 bar Verizon. Gorgeous here but tough in a camper van. Also very windy."

Reservation and access restrictions: Fort Bliss RV Park offers excellent facilities but with specific eligibility requirements. "NOTE: Park is only for Active, Reservist, Retired Military members, their dependents, and blood relatives being escorted." The park operates on a first-come, first-served basis with no advance reservations.

Environmental considerations: The high desert environment presents specific challenges. "It is a safe, clean, and lovely place. It even has sites where, if you have four wheel drive you can go and be very isolated," notes a camper about Franklin Mountains State Park. Water conservation measures are sometimes in effect at facilities in the region.

Tips for camping with families

Dog-friendly campgrounds near Socorro: While most campgrounds in the Socorro area permit pets, trail access may be restricted. At Hueco Tanks, "dogs are not allowed on those trails. There is, however, a trail that circumvents the park where dogs are allowed." This policy protects archaeological resources while still accommodating pet owners.

Educational opportunities: Schedule guided tours at Hueco Tanks to maximize the learning experience. "We enjoyed exploring the park and climbing the mountains. Campers had to get a permit to climb the mountain by 10 a.m. or they would lose their chance to climb. Campsite had electric and water. There was a dump station, shower and flush toilets. Very clean."

Weather planning: The extreme desert temperatures require preparation. "When we booked Mission RV Park, I didn't really look into it that much. We didn't know what to expect. Turns out, it's our new favorite spot to stay when passing through El Paso. The staff are incredibly friendly!" Facilities with indoor recreation options can provide relief during temperature extremes.

Tips from RVers

Repair services availability: Some facilities offer on-site maintenance options. "There is an RV repair shop on site and a RV store. If passing through and you needed some service, I would definitely check this place out," notes a visitor to El Paso Roadrunner RV Park, which can be convenient for emergency repairs.

Noise considerations: Highway proximity affects many campgrounds in the region. "This place was great for an overnight stay. The sites are level dirt, asphalt drives and FHU sites. The price point is excellent (<$50/night for FHU pull-thru). We just don't like being packed in like sardines being only 3ft from your neighbor on either side."

Extended stay options: Several facilities offer weekly and monthly rates for longer visits. "Unexpectedly stayed here for a week while we had to do some errands in town. Great affordable weekly rate ($41/night, $180/week). Also able to receive packages here which was nice. Had electric/water/sewage and a store with parts for minor repairs."
