Lake Bridgeport covers approximately 13,000 acres at an elevation of 836 feet, sitting on the western edge of Wise County. The area transitions into hillier terrain compared to the flatter landscapes east of Bridgeport. Summer temperatures frequently exceed 95°F, while winter camping brings cooler 40-60°F daytime temperatures.
What to do
Hiking trails with rest stops: The LBJ National Grasslands offers multiple hiking paths with spaced rest areas. "The trails are great with something for everyone. I especially enjoyed the Trailway which was well maintained crushed gravel and made for an easy ride into Jacksboro and beyond to the reservoir. Nice points of interest along the way," notes a visitor to Fort Richardson State Park.
Fishing in stocked ponds: The grasslands contain several fishing spots with regularly stocked fish populations. "There's cattle roaming around and a lot of stocked ponds to fish in and some hiking through the different areas. Very peaceful and still close to the city if you forget anything," reports a camper at LBJ National Grasslands.
Historical tours: Explore restored military buildings at Fort Richardson State Park. "The fort is very interesting. I was there on a re-enactment weekend and really enjoyed talking to all the re-enacters. A lot of great history," explains a recent visitor.
What campers like
Lakefront access: Many sites at Wise County Park offer direct water views. "The lake is so pristine and the camping spots are fairly large and ours was right on the water. We could park right next to our spot and put our boat in with the boat ramp that we could see from our spot," shares a camper from Wise County Park.
Private dispersed sites: The grasslands provide secluded camping without facilities. "The sites are a good distance between them. You can drive along the roads and look for them. We spotted 22 sites, there may be more. Download maps before getting here. Cell is not the best. No bathrooms, water, etc," explains a visitor to LBJ National Grasslands Forest Road 904.
Pet exercise opportunities: Dogs enjoy the open spaces around the lake and grasslands. "True Dispersed Camping with the added benefit of cell coverage. Spots are very well spaced out. Only a mile drive to a pond for water for camp showers and putting out fires. See deer, armadillos, hogs, and birds," says a camper at the dispersed camping areas.
What you should know
Seasonal considerations: Summer heat requires preparation. "When I pulled in I spoke to person at the entry who gave me a basic rundown of the facility which included a small restaurant, atv area, sports area including mini golf and a pool and of course the camping experience options themselves," notes a visitor to Thousand Trails Bay Landing.
Limited facilities at primitive sites: Pack water and supplies for dispersed camping. "No bathrooms but there are some at tadra and black creek. There is also water available at those campsite but it's not potable so pack water in or bring a filtration system," advises a camper at LBJ National Grasslands.
Road conditions: Some access roads require caution. "Caution- Google Maps has no idea where the entrance to this campground is. Entry was very easy and the Ranger on duty was extremely helpful. Roads in could use some help," warns a visitor at Thousand Trails Bay Landing.
Tips for camping with families
Kid-friendly activities: Multiple playgrounds and recreation areas exist around Lake Bridgeport. "It has a huge area for kid activities, family gathering and more," notes a Bay Landing visitor.
Educational opportunities: Historical sites provide learning experiences. "If you have kids, the fort buildings are always a hit. They have restored the old hospital building & the officers' living quarters. Decent trail system for short or longer hikes," shares a camper from Fort Richardson.
Pet-friendly swimming spots: For families camping with dogs near Bridgeport, Texas, several areas allow water access. "We stayed in site 124 very close to the water which is a plus for us as my wife is disabled and needs a walker so if the water is too far it becomes an issue," explains a Bay Landing camper.
Tips from RVers
Site selection strategy: For pet friendly camping near Bridgeport, Texas, arrive early to secure prime spots. "You pick your own site which is nice but most of the full hook up sites are occupied by long term residents or annual site holders. The view of the lake is beautiful and the park is quiet," advises a visitor to Tadra Point Trailhead & Campground.
Water and electricity: Check hook-up availability when planning. "We weren't sure about the accessibility to the trailhead road with our 23 foot travel trailer so we opted to stay off road 904, where the horse trailers park, since there were some nice flat spots," shares a Tadra Point camper.
Connectivity considerations: Cell service varies throughout the area. "We were able to work and stream video easily with T-Mobile and AT&T," reports a Bay Landing visitor.
