    The Retreat at Shady Creek

    Awesome RV resort in town

We normally don't do RV resorts, but this one is awesome. The sites are fairly spacious, especially compared to other RV resorts. Big rig friendly with many different style spots to choose from. We always choose the fence line back in sites, and they always come with plenty of grass to walk the dogs. The fence backs up to residential, but that doesn't bother us. Even the back in sites are plenty spacious for a big rig and your tow vehicle and another vehicle. The park is very roomy and easy to navigate and park.

The staff are always so nice and they make late check in a breeze, which we appreciate after a long, tiring day of towing. This RV resort is the only place we've ever stayed in that allows RV washing! For full-time RVers, that's pretty huge. They also have a mail room if you need to receive a package on the road.

The resort is split up into two areas by the road, the Retreat area is more resort like and caters to short term stays, while the other half has long term stays. They both look nice and are clean and beautiful. We will continue to visit every time we pass through the area.

    A Plus RV Park

    Friendly Staff, Easy Highway Access

I have seen this place a million times living in the community nearby and never thought to check to see if they all tent campers. I was shocked to find out they do accommodate them so I passed through and checked out the grounds and wanted to let people know it exists!

There are two entries at the front of the property each easily accessed from the highway. Though they are gravel they are easy to navigate but do hold a little water in the rain. As you drive into the camp there are 4 main rows of camping, mostly in use by RVs however they do also accommodate tent campers. These sites can be picked up nightly or for more long term use so many people at this park have called this their home for a bit. Despite obvious signs of the long term dwellers, the grounds are clean and well maintained and don't look cluttered like some long term campgrounds will begin to look.

The site offers nice restrooms with showers, a bbq for general use, a rec room perfect for having your breakfast or dinner or perhaps a game of cards with friends and has connections for RVs up to 50 amp as well as a dump station.

For the tent camper sites are wide enough to be comfortable to move around and have scattered picnic tables. The tent camping sites are located on a grassy area next to the pond so they are not squished between big rigs and have a bit more privacy.

This site might not look as elaborate as some, but it more than makes up for the few things you do not have by its friendly staff and on site mechanic.

    TIPS:

    • Call in advance if looking for an RV site, they do have several spaces available but during certain times of the year they do fill up as they are centrally located to many things.

    • Check out the LBJ Grasslands which are nearby when visiting this location, a great get away for some outdoor activities.

    Lake Park Campground

    Nice Place

This place is well-maintained and a fairly nice park. Family friendly and there is a lake and playground within walking distance. The staff is courteous. We did not use any of the facilities, except dump station.

There are specific sites for 30 and 50. The middle spaces for 30 amp have no shade. For 50 amp avoid sites 59-63, 0 shade. There are no sewer hookups at the site. Only dumping station.

Reservations is done by calling the park, no online.

    Traders Village RV Park

    Clean and big

We stayed 4 nights in site 24, PT FHU on a level concrete pad with a picnic table and plot of grass. $40/ni after Good Sam. The park is split into two sections; the side we are in is next to an airfield and the other side is by a small dog run (next time, I'll request this section bc I'm traveling with my dogs). They have a store and the laundry is clean and well priced ($1.25/wash, $0.25/12 min dry). The wifi is strong and the park is quiet. There are some long term, possibly permanent, tenants, but their sites are well kept.

Marietta Landing Campground — Lake Murray State Park

    Shaded easy lake access camping

Lake Murray is a large state park which is an easy drive north from the DFW area, so I stay in the SP frequently, but never at this campground. It’s located a bit off the beaten path on the South end of the park. It’s also a smaller campground which accommodates smaller RV’s. Also, there is boat ramp, but it is not large and has little parking, plus it’s not located down the road that leads to the campsites. This means there isn’t constant traffic and power boat noise.

The campground is tucked into a cove of Lake Murray and is down the road from the dam.  There are some very nice walk in tent camping sites where you could walk down to the rocky lake edge and swim. There are also a few drive in tent sites. However, be aware that when I stayed here in spring of 2020, there is no bath house or toilet facilities. There was a nice playground and a little picnic area right on the lake.

The RV sites are scattered around a circular road and there are several right on the lake. These are the best in my opinion. One of them (site 17) is labeled “premium” and I would pay the extra $ to snag this site.

    • Site 14 - Water/Electric 50 and 30 amp, no sewer (dump on site)

    • gravel pad, mostly level, has a tree on awning side so couldn’t deploy my awning, but really unnecessary because the site was nicely shaded

    • Cement picnic bench, BBQ, fire ring

    • Walk down from site to water with rock ledge to sit a chair on and dangle feet in the lake!

    • Site is private on 1 side with forested creek/water run off area, but neighbor is fairly close on other side

    • ***No bathhouse (gutted - see photo)

    • Little cons: no trailheads within the campground, but Tucker Tower is a bike ride or hike over the dam and the trailhead to Ski Jump Campground the the Lodge connects here. (8.5 miles). Also Dump station at the campground is easy access, however the exit up the somewhat eroded gravel hill may require some maneuvering for larger rigs.

Definitely check out Tucker Tower when visiting and Lake Murray SP Nature Center is very well done! I’ll return again for the always good hiking and try to snag the premium site or site 9.

UPDATE 5/2021 - Marietta Landing Campground is being revamped.

Guide to Aubrey

RV campgrounds near Aubrey, Texas offer varied accommodations within a 30-minute drive radius. Most properties feature gravel pads with pull-through options suitable for larger motorhomes and fifth wheels. Temperatures in this North Texas region typically range from 35°F in winter to 96°F in summer, with humid conditions common during warmer months. Cell service remains strong throughout most properties, with Verizon consistently receiving high ratings from travelers.

What to do

Visit local attractions: Lone Oak RV Park provides easy access to their ranch featuring a small zoo with exotic animals. "They've got lemurs, a kangaroo, bunnies, a zebra, a camel and all the farm animals! Cannot say enough about the food at the restaurant, which they will deliver to your campsite," notes reviewer Megan R.

Use fitness facilities: Several rv sites near Aubrey, Texas maintain on-site exercise options. At Shady Creek RV Park, visitors appreciate the active lifestyle amenities. "CrossFit is walking distance (separate business). The pool is nice," according to Rafael A., who noted the park's convenient location near multiple communities.

Enjoy the swimming pools: During hot Texas summers, most parks offer swimming facilities for cooling off. "We did not make it to the pool, the patio or to the dog park. All looked great from a distance," mentions Pedro C. at Shady Creek RV Park, highlighting the well-maintained common areas even during rainy conditions.

What campers like

Clean facilities: Campers consistently praise the maintenance standards at rv parks near Aubrey. At Northlake Village RV Park, "the grounds are well maintained and so are the facilities; pool, fitness room, laundry and bathrooms," according to reviewer Pennie, who stayed during a Thanksgiving holiday.

Fenced yards: Some properties offer enclosed spaces for added privacy and pet containment. At Waggin Tail Ranch RV Park, "Nice sites most are fenced in with big yards. A few pull thru sites unfenced. The long term sites are well maintained," reports Jamie S., who appreciated this uncommon feature during a 5-month work stay.

Pet amenities: Dog owners particularly appreciate dedicated pet facilities. Jamie S. also noted Waggin Tail Ranch offers a "Nice big dog park with a pond, also a grooming and dog wash area," providing specialized amenities for four-legged travelers beyond standard pet-friendly policies.

What you should know

Seasonal considerations: Summer heat in this region requires planning. "Only down side is the Texas heat and none of the sites have any shade trees," mentions Jamie S. about their extended stay at Waggin Tail Ranch RV Park.

WiFi limitations: Internet access varies significantly between properties. At Northlake Village RV Park, one camper reported challenges: "it was disappointing to discover that the FREE WiFi didn't work. I have a sneaky suspicion that the WiFi service we were given to connect to is not the one that long term renters get to use."

Reservation responsiveness: Some campgrounds have inconsistent communication. At Sugar Hill RV Resort, one frustrated traveler reported: "Tried calling several times(during business hours) and wrote several times, never got back to me. Finally just drove there(through the rain)...would've been nice to get a call back."

Tips for camping with families

Look for recreation options: Many area campgrounds include family-friendly amenities. Waggin Tail Ranch RV Park provides "a pool with hot tub, and a small playground for the kids," according to Jamie S., who found these facilities important during their extended stay.

Consider entertainment access: Several parks offer programmed activities. Megan R. at Lone Oak RV Park noted, "They also were doing drive in concerts while we were there!" providing on-site entertainment without leaving the campground.

Find delivery options: Some parks have food service arrangements. "Cannot say enough about the food at the restaurant, which they will deliver to your campsite," reports Megan R. about Lone Oak RV Park, allowing families to avoid cooking while still enjoying meals at their campsite.

Tips from RVers

Check site levelness: Gravel pads in the region vary in quality. At Lake Point RV Resort, "Our site required minimal east to west leveling," reports Gary S., indicating some adjustment may be needed depending on your equipment.

Investigate utility placement: At Lake Point RV Resort, "some utilities can be long runs depending on type of RV(especially sewer)," according to Gary S., suggesting travelers should verify their cord and hose lengths will reach connections at their assigned site.

Understand noise factors: Highway proximity affects some properties. Gary S. also notes at Lake Point RV Resort, "Highway traffic noise is pretty significant here, especially if parked at the front of the park," recommending requesting interior sites when possible.
