Pin Oak Campground — Natchez Trace State Park

Clean Shower House and Personable Hosts

This campground has become our favorite. The campground is amazing, the bathrooms are cleaned everyday on weekends and every other day during the week. Completely cleaned!

The site has 77 sites full hook-up with sewage. Every site has grill, fire pit, table and lantern hook. We were #38 it was easy to back into and pretty level. The campground also have small cabins with bunk beds to rent. There is no indoor water just beds, electric and air for a great price. There is a small swimming area too at Pin Oak.

There are a few lakes in the area. Pin Oak is the only motor lake. Cub lake has a larger swim area with paddle boat, Jon boat and kayak rentals. The rentals are only weekends. Browns Creek Lake also has honest system rentals of Jon boat but for fishing purposes only and you have to pay for a lake permit.

The park is great! Lexington is close for quick runs for anything you need. We loved this park so much we may be changing our family BBQ to this park next year.

KOA Campground Kentucky Lakes Prizer Point

    Cool campground with great views!

Most sites have great views of Lake Barkley! Large camp store with a restaurant that serves sandwiches, pizza, beer and sodas... Golf cart rentals and the marina has boat rentals. Full hookups on most sites including cable, and lakeside sites have the “honey wagon” that comes around to empty tanks. WiFi is pretty ok. Cell reception is good. Cabin rental and seasonal sites available.

    Buffalo I-40-Exit 143 KOA

I mean, if you like KOA...

And the sound of the interstate then this is for you. The best part about this place is it’s close to the log cabin restaurant. Try the pie!

    Buchanan Resort

Great Place to Stay by Kentucky Lake

Buchanan Resort is a well maintained resort with access to many amenities like a restaurant, pool, playground, pavilion, and store. The docks are easily accessible being close to the lots. The lots at the resort campground have water and electricity as well as a picnic table and a simple, stationary, charcoal grill. If you do not have an RV then they have cottages to be rented out. This resort is a great place to stay overall.

    Piney Campground

    Lake nearby!

Being close to water is always nice, and our family always looks for this when we are traveling away from home to camp. Kentucky Lake is nearby, and we spent most of our day here. We towed our small boat from home because we wanted to be able to enjoy being on the water (and my dad wanted to fish). There is running water and showers available on site, although I just jumped in the lake and shampooed my hair in their :) Very large campground, which was nice. Lots of room between campsites. Always a plus for us. The campground itself was really nice, we were actually very impressed. The campsites were well marked and had a picnic table, fire ring and a hanging rack which was super nice! We hung our wet suits from being in the lake all day. Great hiking nearby too. We would hike in the morning, and play in the water the rest of the day. The attendants/rangers were awesome, and directed us in the right place for hiking. You can see from my pictures attached that we hiked almost everyday. We would definitely stay here again next time we are in the area.

    Tanglewood Campground & RV Resort

    Wonderful experience!

This site is completely RV/mobile camping! It’s easy to access and well taken care of in means of landscaping, our site was also right next to the front and the store!

Our site included a picnic table, water access, electrical outlets and a fire pit. The lake is nearby and there is an access near the entrance of the campgrounds.

The grounds are well taken care of as I had previously said and honestly very inviting, the people are very nice and have an entire area for kids!

    I’d recommend Tanglewood!

    Montgomery Bell State Park Campground

    Beautiful

This was our first stay here, and we had heard great things about it. It is a beautiful state park known as the"Queen of Tennessee's State Parks". There are 4,000 acres with mountain biking, fishing, hiking, picnic areas, kayaking/canoeing, and a golf course. Nashville is only 45 minutes away. The campground was nice. Our site was tight, and we didn't have a lot of room for our truck. We had to move to a different site for the 3rd night and the water connection was quite a reach. The sites were mostly level and some were shaded. The bathhouse was clean and there was a laundry area with 2 washers/dryers. We did have a picnic table and fire ring. We had 2-3 bars of Verizon 4G. There was a playground for the kids. There is a small creek that runs along the western edge of the campground. We did spot some snakes(copperheads maybe?) near the creek. There is a small camp store that had a few supplies, ice cream, ice& firewood. The employees were very nice. We would definitely stay here again.

    Energy Lake Campground

    Nice!

Large camping area w/several loops. One which will soon be all rental cabins. Each loop has its own restroom/shower house and all are near the lake( some closer then others) canoe rental or bring your own, basketball court and playground as well as swimming area. There is direct access to one of the many trails in LBL and several within easy biking or driving distance. The staff was very helpful.

    Energy Lake Campground

    Very Good

A friend and I and our 4 kids stayed in a camper cabin here in September. We normally tent camp but it was a weekend with record heat. I love this campground as an alternative to Hillman Ferry, where we have often stayed. The cabins were clean and comfortable with cold AC, the hosts were friendly and the no-wake lake and canoe rentals were fun. I would advise checking with the hosts about canoe and kayak rentals upon check in, there is limited availability when camp is full and hot weather can also affect. This campground is also in a good location to explore all LBL has to offer when compared to Hillman, it's closer to the Elk and Bison Prairie and Wranglers Campground, as well as the Nature Station, which is great for us since we like to trail ride and hike. Downfall is the beach is muddy and rocky and the playground is old with just a metal slide and swings. We didn't want to swim here so maybe plan on doing that elsewhere at the lakes. Next time we will camp, likely on loop D, which had some nice lakeview sites. You can't see the water from the cabin loop. There is spotty cell service throughout the campground.

Tennessee Ridge sits at approximately 480 feet elevation in the western part of the state, creating distinctive seasonal conditions for campers. Waterfront cabin rentals typically book months in advance during summer while more options become available in fall and winter months.

What to do

Water recreation access: At Land Between The Lakes National Recreation Area Piney Campground, visitors enjoy direct lake access from many cabins. "Great waterside locations... both times were able to get waterside spots and drop the kayaks right in at the campsite," notes one reviewer who recommends reserving early for prime dates.

Historical sites exploration: Cabin guests can visit nearby Fort Donelson National Battlefield, 15 minutes from many Tennessee Ridge accommodations. "Fort Donelson is also nearby in Dover, TN. It is a day use park with beautiful views," explains a camper who explored the area's Civil War history.

Fishing opportunities: Several cabin properties provide fishing piers and boat launches. "There is a fishing pier people were talking about but we didnt try it," mentions one camper, while another adds that "the marina and an overpass allows you to cross over to the other side where the lodge and golf course are."

What campers like

Clean facilities: Montgomery Bell State Park Campground maintains well-kept cabins with regular maintenance. "The state park is absolutely gorgeous. The facilities were maintained and the staff was extremely helpful," reports a tent camper who stayed at the park.

River access: Piney River Resort offers cabin rentals with water features. "We chose a site along the beautiful Piney River with full hook-ups, level cement pad, pavilion with lights and ceiling fan," states one visitor. Another mentions, "The water is crystal clear and cold. We sat in beach chairs and let the current wash over us."

Recreation amenities: Most cabin areas include additional facilities. "Buchanan Resort is a well maintained resort with access to many amenities like a restaurant, pool, playground, pavilion, and store," notes a visitor. For families, Piney Campground offers "a pavilion and basketball court plus several playgrounds throughout."

What you should know

Booking timeline: Summer cabin rentals require advance planning. "You will need to reserve out 3-4 weeks to get an electric spot," advises a Piney camper. Cabins with premium locations book first, especially waterfront units.

Bathroom facilities: Cabin bathrooms vary significantly between properties. At Paris Landing State Park Campground, "the bathhouse was really nice, felt new and was very clean," while at other locations, "the bathrooms were clean, but are in bad need of updates, as are the shower facilities."

Noise considerations: Highway proximity affects some cabin locations. "The grounds are next to the highway so we heard a lot of loud traffic," reports one Paris Landing visitor. Another camper notes, "the road noise was bothersome. We were in a spot pretty far from the road but it was very noticeable."

Supply requirements: Most cabins need additional supplies. "Most sites are level, but there are a few longer ones. Seems like many are unlevel," reports a Paris Landing visitor. Another notes that "basic cabins" typically require guests to bring bedding and cooking equipment.

Tips for camping with families

Kid-friendly activities: Loretta Lynn's Ranch provides unique entertainment options. "They have equestrian spots, RV spots, tent spots, and cabins for rent. Plus so much to do on the property!" A different visitor mentions the tours: "The tours of Loretta's homestead replica, her mansion and the museums was AMAZING!"

Swimming spots: Water access varies by location. At Montgomery Bell, "children can wade in the creek all day, why parents enjoy sitting outside under all the shade trees." Another visitor to Piney River Resort explains, "We swam and waded in the (very clean) river and watched kids jumping off of the rock ledge."

Bike-friendly parks: Several campgrounds accommodate cycling. "Kids ride bicycles all over the park and I feel the place is pretty secure," notes a Piney Campground visitor. Another camper agrees: "Lots to do for kids - bike paths, basketball court, multiple playgrounds, etc."

Tips from RVers

Access considerations: Some cabin areas have challenging approaches. One visitor to Piney River Resort cautions, "the drive in from the highway was very scary on narrow, windy roads with dropoffs on the side." Follow official directions rather than GPS in many cases.

Seasonal availability: Paris Landing-Kentucky Lake KOA operates from March 15 to October 30 with limited availability outside those dates. "A spectacular secluded location with great pull thru sites. Shaded. Lots of activities and possibilities for the whole family," explains a visitor.

Utility connections: Cabin electric connections vary widely. At Buchanan Resort, a camper reports, "We had to use the electricity from the site behind us because ours wasn't grounded." Check each property's electrical capacity before booking if appliances are needed.
