Jackson Island Dispersed Campground offers free pet-friendly camping directly along Watts Bar Lake shoreline with multiple waterfront sites. This Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) managed area allows dogs with no specified breed restrictions, though pets must be kept under control. Several campsites feature concrete pads and established fire rings, providing convenient access for both tent and RV camping. Rhea Springs Recreation Area County Park also welcomes pets at its lakeside campsites, with restrooms, showers, and a boat ramp available for campers. Fall Creek Falls State Park Campground and Cumberland Mountain State Park both permit pets at their established campgrounds and cabin accommodations. Trash bins are provided at Jackson Island, and campers frequently note the area has improved cleanliness compared to previous years despite occasional issues with theft of unattended items.

Waterfront camping at Jackson Island provides excellent opportunities for dogs to enjoy swimming and shoreline exploration, though the area can become crowded during peak summer months when monitoring your pet becomes especially important. The campground is typically open from mid-April through early November, with seasonal closure occurring around the first week of November. Campers report varying experiences with privacy, noting early April visits offer more secluded camping while summer weekends bring heavier traffic. Nearby Rhea Springs Recreation Area features maintained grounds with mowed grass and lake view sunsets, though operating hours have changed—the previously free campground now charges $10 for Tennessee residents and $22 for out-of-state campers. Both locations offer direct water access for dogs that enjoy swimming, with shallower areas appropriate for pets to cool off during hot summer months.

      Clean, Quiet, Friendly

Friendly Staff, Clean Bathrooms, Convenient Location. No honeywagon for water and electric only sites, but dump station in campground. Some very nice private sites and none of the sites except maybe a few look very small or tight- pretty spread out. Lots of tent sites. You definitely hear the highway here, but not a big concern for us. Pet friendly with a very nice dog park. Pool for the kids. Playground is little more than a residential style wood swingset, but it kept the kids entertained.

Great owners make all the difference!

Convenient location just off Interstate 75. Quiet wooded area with plenty of activities for the kids. Swimming pool, fishing pond, playground, jump pad. We don't have pets, but there is a small dog park area. Lots of planned weekend activities. Bathrooms are very clean and well-maintained. My husband is disabled and we are very appreciative of the separate handicap facilities. You don't have that in a lot of campgrounds. We like the sites best towards the front of the park close to the pool. The owners are very hands-on and involved and you can tell. We have camped all over the country but this is our favorite local getaway when we have a free weekend.

      Nice KOA

Lots of green grass. The dog park is very well kept. There is a road close by but not a major freeway. It’s one of the quieter KOA’s I have stayed at. Pool is small but very clean. The store is well stocked and you can get hand dipped ice cream.

      $35 primitive camping

I should have gotten one of their little cabins...they look cozy and they are right next to the primitive camping.

I checked in after hours and its a little confusing as to where I can park my car back here. I am next to a sign that says cars aren't allowed beyond this point, but I see another group who have their car... beyond said point. There's a water spigot behind the sign, so perhaps its just meant as a warning so drivers don't crash into it.

The sound of people's wood cracking in their fire is stressing my retired greyhound dog out, but he's never been around camp fires before.

Place seems nice enough in general.

They have a little dog park... that's cool.

And I have two bars of 5G service through T-Mobile.

      Bluewater Resort & RV Campground

      Beautiful grounds

This is a beautiful park with very roomy, clean restrooms, a general store, docks, dog park, and playground. The boat ramp is used early and late, with the trailers bouncing over speed bumps which can make it very noisy, especially on the weekends. The pool and pavilion are fantastic, and the views are lovely.

      Harrison Bay State Park Campground

Beautiful but sites are VERY uneven

I was greatly deceived by the photos and descriptions online. We had site 40 and it was much much shorter than online said and the incline was insane. I would say 90% of the sites in loops B, C, and D should not be sites. Loop A has the most level sites with a lot not having shade though. Site 15 seemed to be the best in the whole park. Leveling our popup was miserable. Most campers we saw come in seemed to be the same as us. First time being there and not realizing the sites are significantly shorter than listed and shown in photos and extremely unlevel. I couldn’t even imagine a tent camper in most sites comfortably with how much of an incline and then slope you’re on. It’s a straight up hill and then it’s tilted to the side too. Sites are also extremely close together which is fine if you plan to be out or on the water a lot but it’s very cramped.

Bathrooms in loop B were the largest and cleaned daily. Bathrooms were great with the exception of the doors being super small but not an issue really. I’m 6ft and it was just funny seeing over everything.

Lake is BEAUTIFUL. So many areas to swim and great trails. Good place for pets.

One host in the entire park and we were lucky to be next to them and listen to their dog park and cry all day and night as they never let him in. Their site is right there when you go in and just trashed with all kinds of stuff. Feels more like a trailer park than state park. Never once saw the hosts and the camp store/office was closed every day we were there (we were there for a week Sunday to Sunday) Our site had quite a bit of trash when we got there. I’m shocked how the bathrooms were kept so clean but sites were not

They have check in listed at 4pm but every day new campers were there far before 4 which isn’t a problem but helps to know you can really get there anytime.

Overall the area is amazing with so much to do for everyone. Fishing, hiking, swimming, plenty to do all around. I would come back only for loop A and site 15. Maybe some others in loop A. Unless you have a camper van that you are fine being tilted, I would avoid all loops besides A. We saw a lot of people get there and then leave when they couldn’t park or level their site and there weren’t other options any better for them

Cell service was great. T-Mobile hotspot was amazing for me to work remote

      Overnite RV Park

      Friendly and nice

Very nice owners and park for a quick stop off of 75. Description says no 30amo sites, but they do have 30amp. There are small grass spots in between the sites for pets, but also a larger grassy area "pet walk" at the end. Nice and clean bathhouse. Will stay here again if passing through.

      Parksville Lake RV Campground

      Great Campground for Nature Lovers

This may be one of our new favorite campgrounds!!! We stayed in site 10 on the water. It was absolutely beautiful!!! So peaceful.

The campground hosts were phenomenal!!! They made sure all campers had everything they need. They also make sure people are following the rules!! While I was walking my dogs, a truck drove the wrong way in the loop to get to his spot. A camp host quickly reminded him to drive the right way.

There's plenty of fishing opportunity, so bring the fishing gear!

Pet friendly, but make sure you keep all pets on a leash!!

There are electric hookups, but not water. There are water spigots around the campground to fill up the water tanks! There is a spigot right across the road from site 10.

In site 10, the driveway is short. It only fit our 18' camper and our truck. But there ARE other sites that can accommodate much larger rigs. Just do a little homework prior to reserving a spot.

While we visited in mid July, the temperatures were fantastic! I was not too hot at all! The shade trees did a great job of blocking out heat.

      I highly recommend this cg!!

      Sweetwater KOA

      Awesome Holiday Campground

This is a very lively, well traveled RV Park and Campground. Sweetwater is a Holiday KOA meaning it’s has more amenities than their Journey parks (meant for traveling through).

The park has quite a few large sites for big rigs that are about 80-100ft long. The maximum rig size is 60ft. Some sites are paved, most are gravel. There are two sites that are very long with amazing decks.

The park offers full hook up RV Sites, Cabins, Tent sites. For amenities there is a bouncy blob (dry), small pond with fountain and memorial bench, large playground for the kids, volleyball, basketball, I’m not sure what the game is next to the blob. They have two dog parks, one for tiny pups and one for larger pups. There is a nice pavillion near the pond with a large fire pit. They have trash bins distributed throughout the park making trash disposal convenient.

This park goes all out for the holidays. We are a month out from Halloween and they have done a spectacular job with decorating. They have lots of kids events. On Saturday there is a train that takes kids and adults on a ride around the park.

Everyone who works here has been super friendly and helpful. They really seem to go above and beyond making sure everyone has a great stay.

Cellular signals for AT&T and TMobile we’re both pretty good. We were able to stream and work. There were a couple of brief moments that getting signal was a challenge, but overall it was easy to work.

    Guide to Spring City

Dispersed camping areas near Spring City, Tennessee offer access to Watts Bar Lake, a 39,000-acre reservoir along the Tennessee River. The region sits at approximately 750 feet elevation with a mild climate that allows camping from April through October. Water levels at Watts Bar Lake fluctuate seasonally, with summer levels typically 5-6 feet higher than winter pool, affecting shoreline camping conditions.

    What to do

Hiking trails: Fall Creek Falls State Park Campground provides extensive hiking options ranging from easy walks to challenging routes. "One of the best hiking parks I've ever been to. Miles and miles of trails; short, long, loops, overnights. This place has it all," notes Myke C. The park's cable trail offers unique terrain with significant elevation changes leading to waterfall views.

Water activities: Fooshee Pass Campground offers lake access with a gradual shoreline entry. "The lake is shallow with a slow grade which was perfect for our young children," writes Valerie M. The campground provides boat launching facilities and fishing opportunities directly from waterfront sites.

Seasonal activities: During fall months, Cumberland Mountain State Park transforms with colorful foliage. "Cumberland Mountain State Park is one of our favorite places to camp. This is a beautiful park, especially in October," shares Mary D. The park maintains its facilities year-round, making it accessible during off-peak seasons.

    What campers like

Privacy levels: Early spring camping at Jackson Island Dispersed Campground offers more seclusion than summer visits. "We went during a relatively chilly weekend in early April and had no trouble finding a spot. It was quiet, private, and beautiful," reports Andrew R., noting this experience differs significantly from peak season.

Waterfront access: Hornsby Hollow Campground provides direct lake access from many sites. "The campground was one of the most scenic I've been to. Some of the lakefront spots had their own access to the lake and plenty of trees," states Mary D. Sites are positioned to maximize water views while maintaining shade coverage.

Campsite spacing: At Cumberland Mountain State Park, sites offer adequate separation. "Good state park. Beautiful area and spacious sites," notes Jake W. The park's layout provides natural barriers between many camping areas, creating distinct camping loops with different characteristics.

    What you should know

Seasonal closures: Jackson Island typically closes in early November. "We arrived on Oct 30 to find several spaces available, many of which are convenient pull-through spaces... sadly we're informed by a man driving around to be out by Nov 3 as they're closing the site for the season," reports Chelsea H., who discovered the closure timeline during her stay.

Campground amenities: Rhea Springs Recreation Area County Park has transitioned from free to fee-based camping. "Rhea springs is a beautiful place! Starting to charge here was the best thing rhea could have done. Its free during the day to just swim and what not," explains Stephanie C., noting the change has reduced overcrowding issues.

Security considerations: At Jackson Island, unattended belongings may be at risk. "Left to go on a hike & came back to our chairs & wood being stolen. Disappointing, but also the chance you take when leaving your personal items unattended," warns Tam E., though she notes they "felt safe overall" during their stay.

    Tips for camping with families

Kid-friendly activities: Fall Creek Falls State Park Campground offers diverse recreation options for families. "There's tons to do from hiking, to swimming, waterfall gazing, rock climbing, ziplining, and much more. The campgrounds are spacious and have great clean bathrooms," shares Brandie D., highlighting the park's family accommodations.

Beginner-friendly camping: Fall Creek Falls provides accessible facilities for new campers. "We love to camp at Fall Creek Falls State Park and think this would be a great park for novice campers due to the fact that the facilities are very nice. Modern bathhouses located in each camping area, swimming pool, golf course and restaurant make roughing it easier for those who need more comfort while camping," suggests Sandra V.

Pet exercise areas: Sweetwater KOA includes dedicated dog park sections. "They have two dog parks, one for tiny pups and one for larger pups," notes Laura H., making this location suitable for pet-friendly camping near Spring City, Tennessee with dogs of varying sizes.

    Tips from RVers

Hookup positioning: Fooshee Pass Campground has unusual utility placement. "Only weird thing is the hookups are on the opposite side of the site. Take a 50 ft water hose and a 30 amp extension - ours was 50 ft but I think a 30 ft would work," advises Kc K., highlighting a critical preparation detail for RVers.

Site leveling: Cumberland Mountain sites vary in terrain. "Campground has 5 loops and many nice sites although some are not level but they have worked on many of them. Full hookups are in Loop I or A and this loop is open year around," explains Bob T., recommending specific areas for RV camping.

WiFi considerations: At Hornsby Hollow Campground, connectivity has limitations. "We saw where the campground had WIFI. We work from the road so this is important. We found that the WIFI does not reach the actual campground. If you sit at the picnic table at the office, it works!" shares Jerry B., noting a potential issue for remote workers seeking pet-friendly camping options near Spring City, Tennessee.
