    Tiny Town RV Campground

    Nice Campground, Great Location

Family owned RV campground with full hook-ups and a food truck on the property! We were there on a Thursday evening and had delicious chicken street tacos. Easy to get in and out of the campground with our 28 foot travel trailer. Pull thru, level sites. Peaceful location surrounded by trees. You can hear the birds chirping and the neighbor's rooster while you sit outside enjoying the morning sun. All the sites have 20, 30 and 50 amp power, and a water hook up. The plumbing at each site is housed in whiskey barrels which we thought was a clever idea. Most sites had sewer as well. We had a picnic table and fire ring at our site also. Our Verizon phones worked fine with 4G, two bars. The campground is new, and small(16 sites) which we liked. The owners have plans to add activities and events in the near future but it currently has everything an RV camper would need. They were working on an axe throwing building and an activity area for kids when we were there. It's in a great location for exploring Summerville or Charleston, or for spending the day at one of the many nearby beaches. They offer a discount if staying a week which is wonderful since there is so much to do in the nearby towns.

    Mount Pleasant-Charleston KOA

    Awesome campground

This is a fantastic campground. The staff is friendly and helpful. The grounds are very well maintained. There are activities offered including a wagon ride through a plantation. There is a pool. They offer bike rental, along with kayak/paddle boat rentals. There’s a great dog park our pups loved. We paid a little extra for a deluxe site with full hookups and a lake view. The deluxe site also had a concrete pad, brick fire pit, and a swing. It was a shady spot with big oak trees. There is a nice camp store. The location of this campground is perfect near stores, restaurants, and not far from the beach.

    Eagle's RV Campground

    Ranger Review: Eagle’s RV Campground

We called to reserve a week long stay and were told they had sites available, which turned out was only one. The campground is definitely a “no frills” park and mostly used by long term/permanent residents. The host/owner had us pull right next to his own rig, it was a tight fit and we had zero privacy. He then proceeded to sit on his RV stairs and smoke and stare at us both when we were outside and when we were in our rig. We could smell the smoke which isn’t ok with us. We didn’t even bother to put the slides out. When we set up the electricity we had fire ants attack us. We decided quickly that we’d only stay the night and we’d leave first thing in the morning. Across the street is a nice state park and campground (Colleton State Park) but they unfortunately didn’t have any sites open big enough for our 30 ft class A. I’d recommend staying there over this campground if you want to be in this exact area. We luckily found another campground closer to Charleston to stay at.

    Mount Pleasant-Charleston KOA

    Beautiful, well-kept, campground.

Good location and quiet even though it sits right near Hwy 17 in a busy section of the city. Huge catch-and-release lake for fishing. The staff goes out of their way to accommodate your needs. Weak WiFi signal, but they will loan you a modem at no extra charge to connect to the Ethernet at the power post which is connected to a site-wide fiber optic network. It sits on a historic plantation that is only accessible by KOA guests with hay rides Monday through Thursday. Full hook-up with propane refill and dump station. Very near Wal-mart and Lowe's for shopping, among other stores. I recommend this KOA.

    Hunting Island State Park Campground

    Beachside campground

What a lovely spot! Walking miles on the beach on mild January days sometimes without seeing anyone else! Incredible shell collections. Campsites are big, lots of palm trees may limit some campsites for big rigs so speak to someone there when booking or use pull through sites. Sites do need more gravel, some are muddy. I didn’t use bathhouse. Short walk to beach. Great camp store, need to visit.

    Buck Hall Recreation Area

Intercoastal Camping: Watch Wildlife from the Campground

Reservations during the main season are key if you have any hope of getting a campsite in this awesome Francis Marion National Forest campground which sits just along the gorgeous intercoastal waterway, about 40 minutes northeast of Charleston, SC! We pulled in without reservations and nearly every site was booked out. The campground host was super helpful, though, finding us an empty spot (due to a cancellation) for a couple nights, then moved us to a non-reservable site for the remainder of our time.

The majority of the sites are designed for very large RVs, with a few very nice waterfront sites designated for tents. Each site is spacious, complete with a picnic table, firepit, 2 lantern poles, and electrical hookups, with a dump station at the back of the campground. The bathrooms are equipped with flush toilets, sinks, and a shower and kept relatively clean.

The campground itself is dripping with live oaks and speckled with Palmetto trees, so lots of shade is available, especially in the tent areas. The boat launch is walking distance from the campground and has a nice picnic area adjacent to it. We watched a pods of pelicans and dolphins come through the area, as well as many other sea birds.

We kayaked along the intercoastal waterway and out into marshy sea grass areas and had one of the most amazing wildlife encounters to date (and we’ve been all over the country). We saw a pod of dolphins in the distance, which appeared to be feeding. We stopped about 150 away and just enjoyed watching them dance and dive in the morning light. Then, two of the dolphins peeled away from the pack and headed straight toward us. As they approached our kayaks, the larger one gave an extra tail fin flap and dove under our boats, coming up just a bit on the other side. As naturalists, our hearts were pounding with excitement! We also hiked and mountain-biked along the gorgeous Palmetto Trail (which is a mountains-to-sea trail across South Carolina, and this campground serves as its coastal terminus).

Also, don’t miss the famous Sewee Restaurant for some downeast coastal Carolina fare, as well as the Center for Birds of Prey just across the highway from this restaurant. This wildlife conservation and rehabilitation center is doing some amazing things for birds and in the region and doing a great job of public education. If you head up the coast, be sure to stop in Boats & Hoagies in McClellanville for a bite to eat. Cute place, great food, awesome service!

The $20 per night fee is a great price for the amenities this campground offers, especially with full hook-ups and showers, and a boat launch. Check out our blog on The Dyrt's Online Magazine about our experience on the coast of South Carolina.

Campground at James Island County Park

    Hidden gem for visiting Charleston

When making reservations at James Island County Park we had modest expectations, but we were going to tour Charleston most of the time, so we decided anything close to the city would be good enough. The campground turned out to be very nice. We wished we had stayed there longer to enjoy not only Charleston, but the nature beauty of the park itself. The campground is located in a huge park with lots of amenities. The sites are spacious, covered with trees, full hookups with 50 amp service. There are a lot of shaded picturesque walking and bike trails in the park. The dog park was amazingly big, with a little doggy beach for water lovers. There is a big kids playground with a fun looking spray play fountain. It is located just 15 min drive from the campground to downtown Charleston. It is a great campground to stay when visiting Charleston. We have a video on our YouTube Channel- Summertime RV Rovers- about this park- Great Campgrounds in Coastal South Carolina: Charleston and Hilton Head Island. Please check for yourself. We camped at James Island County Park in a Motorhome.

    Santee Coastal Reserve

    Beautiful Primitive Campground

Set up my pop up in #4. Large, beautiful private sites. Gorgeous trails within walking distance. Great opportunity to see wildlife. Lots of mosquitoes, but not miserably so. Short drive to the beach.

Campground at James Island County Park

    Awesome Place to RV Camp

We found this campground well maintained and quiet. The bath house was recently remodeled and now has air conditioning. I found it to be one of the nicest bath facilities we have ever used. The campsites have full RV hook-ups and come with a picnic table and fire ring. The park does allow pets and has a dog park with a beach; it seems like the pups were having a marvelous time playing chase on the beach. This is a County Park with trails for walking or leisure biking. A new water park is under construction and should open this summer. The camp store is well stocked and the staff was very friendly and helpful. One downside was the WIFI (one of the perks at this place) did not work the entire 5 days we were there. I need to work remotely so this was a BIG problem. I had to go to the Starbucks to work...bummer! Positives were the easy drive and parking at nearby Folly Beach during the week, and the close proximity to Historic Charleston.

Guide to Summerville

RV camping near Summerville, South Carolina offers access to freshwater fishing, wildlife viewing, and maritime forest landscapes within an hour's drive. The region sits at the transition between coastal plains and swampland ecosystems, with year-round camping opportunities thanks to mild winters where temperatures rarely drop below freezing. Several campgrounds offer amenities specifically designed for extended stays.

What to do

Fishing access: At Johnston Landing Campground & Cabins, campers can enjoy shoreline fishing directly from the property. "Once you successfully navigate all of the backroads past Lake Marion and directly on the shores of Lake Moultrie, you'll eventually find a small nook in the road where you'll discover Johnston Landing, which is set off immediately by what looks to be a small bayou," notes camper Stuart K.

Water recreation: Kayaking and boating opportunities abound at Palmetto Shores RV Resort, with direct water access. "Big park with nice views of the water. They had a playground, cabins, games. Just a very woodsy cozy place," reports Douglas T. The resort also features a "nice lake beach and a really nice pool and lazy River," according to Claire O.

Day trips: Plan excursions to nearby landmarks from your campsite. "The Palmetto Trial is just about 5 miles away, but is definitely worth the hike as here you'll be able to witness first hand the sunken giant Cypress trees, amazing bird watching (Ospreys and Herons in particular)," recommends Stuart K. about Johnston Landing.

What campers like

Spacious sites: New Green Acres RV Park receives consistent praise for site dimensions. "This park has really really long spaces. It's great for when towing a long trailer too but be mindful that there is a whole pile of trees," advises Mike F. Another camper notes, "These spots were huge right next to highway but noise doesn't bother us. Stayed for a week. Really close to town."

Natural surroundings: Wooded environments enhance the camping experience at several locations. At Black Pearl Farms, campers enjoy "Beautiful, well maintained site beside the Edisto river, just as advertised! Private, peaceful, just what we were looking for," according to John B. The property offers five sites in a wooded area behind a working farm.

Pet-friendly amenities: Many campgrounds accommodate four-legged family members. "The dogs loved the dog park and I appreciated having bags to pick up after them," shared Douglas T. about Palmetto Shores RV Resort. New Green Acres also features "a nice dog park" according to reviewer Wilma K.

What you should know

Reservation requirements: Most campgrounds require advance booking, with limited walk-up availability. "We were there on a Thursday evening and had delicious chicken street tacos," notes a camper about Tiny Town RV Campground, indicating weekday stays may offer more availability.

Connectivity challenges: WiFi and cell service vary significantly between locations. "The wifi doesn't work right at the office, which is a bummer," reports Mimi about New Green Acres RV Park. Another camper noted "Verizon worked well, good OTA TV, from our spot I-1 we couldn't get satellite, but others would have been just fine."

Military restrictions: Some facilities have limited access. "Would be great but as stated you must qualify to stay," explains Barbara P. about Foster Creek RV Park, which serves military personnel. A recent visitor clarified: "IF you meet the qualifications to stay (military affiliated), this is REALLY close to the Navy Nuke School!"

Tips for camping with families

Swimming options: Look for campgrounds with dedicated swimming areas for children. "Palmetto shores has a nice outdoor activity area, a nice lake beach and a really nice pool and lazy River," reports Claire O., making it suitable for families with children who enjoy water activities.

Playground access: Several campgrounds offer play equipment. "Super cute family owned rv campground. All the basics, no frills.. they do have plans on creating activities for the guest. 2 dog runs, fire pit, sand box for the kiddos," notes Alesha H. about Bird dog RV and stay.

Weather preparation: The region can experience significant rainfall. "The tent sites were unlevel and muddy (since it rained before we arrived and all the water ran down hill to the tent sites)," cautions Sara R. about Lake Aire RV Park, suggesting families should pack extra tarps and rain gear during wet seasons.

Tips from RVers

Site selection strategy: Choose carefully based on your specific needs. "Be mindful of the site you pick! Our sites were right next to the highway, I will say though we did tune the noise out the longer we stayed," advises Claire O. about Palmetto Shores.

Seasonal planning: May offers unique experiences at certain locations. "Fresh blueberries!" exclaims Robert G. about Black Pearl Farms, highlighting the farm's U-pick opportunities during spring.

Navigation challenges: GPS systems sometimes provide incorrect directions. "CAUTION: The directions provided by The Dyrt to this location are incorrect. It is not located on Sand Hill. So please use Google Maps to find the location or you will be down a long dirt road with no place to turn around," warns Kathleen R. about Black Pearl Farms.
