What to do
Fishing opportunities: Bush Recreation Area sits alongside Loyalhanna Creek with a large boat dock and shoreline access for anglers. "This is a nice, quiet small campground with a small lake. Our grandchildren loved it. The boat launch is a nice size to fit 2 boats at a time," notes AnnaMarie S. The lake is stocked and campers report success, particularly in spring and early summer.
Hiking trails: Raccoon Creek State Park offers over 40 miles of trails through diverse terrain. "The hiking trails are in excellent condition and the park keeps them clear of fallen debris," according to Jim L. The Palomino Loop is accessible year-round, with one visitor noting, "Got out for a couple hours hiking in the snow. It was great. Just what we needed to stretch the legs and enjoy some family time."
Biking on the GAP Trail: The Great Allegheny Passage runs through several campsites in the region. The GAP Trail Campground caters specifically to cyclists with convenient trail access. "Town is a short walk away, with a few restaurants and other options for necessities as well," mentions Shari G., making it a strategic base for cyclists planning day trips.
What campers like
Clean facilities: Fox Den Acres Campground receives high marks for maintenance. "Although the campground is close to several large cities, it is very relaxed, wooded, and quiet. Operator of the park was very pleasant as he passed by our site several times doing maintenance work," notes a camper named Harley. Bathroom facilities across campgrounds vary in quality, but most maintain reasonable cleanliness standards.
Spacious sites: Many campers appreciate the ample space at sites like Fox Den Acres where "Each site was very spacious and well shaded. Fire ring and table at each sight. Restroom were a short walk away," according to Dena L. The tent sites offer more room than typical commercial campgrounds in the area.
Mountain views: Mountain Top Campground in Tarentum delivers on its name with panoramic vistas. "You are on top of a mountain with great views. The spots are well spaced out and it is family owned," explains Corey L. Sites along the rim provide the best views, especially during fall foliage season when colors transform the surrounding landscape.
What you should know
Seasonal operations: Most campgrounds in the area operate from April through October, with limited year-round options. Madison-Pittsburgh S.E. KOA remains open throughout winter, with one camper noting, "We're staying in the winter for a few nights to visit friends who live outside Pittsburgh. Friendly and cozy spot. They've done a great job in the winter despite the frigid weather by using heat tape on the spigots."
Train noise: Campgrounds near the GAP trail experience regular train disturbances, especially at night. Expect frequent passing trains with braking noise at some locations. One visitor advised, "One thing to consider with these campgrounds next to the trail is the number of trains that pass by in the night. It's not the train horn but the number of turns in the track and the squealing breaks that keep you up."
Water availability: Keystone State Park Campground and several other locations have restrictions on water access during early spring and late fall. Some primitive sites require campers to carry water from central facilities. For tent campers, one visitor mentioned, "No water sources in the primitive section, and the shower house is quite a hike from the furthest sites."
Tips for camping with families
Pool access: Pine Cove Beach Club RV Resort features a large swimming pool that's popular with families. "The pool & concession stand, beautifully maintained lawns and gravel campsites, modern hookups, good shower/laundry facilities," were highlights for Heath T. The pool typically opens Memorial Day weekend and operates through Labor Day.
Playground availability: Bush Recreation Area includes a playground centrally located near several campsites. "We rented space 16 late August 2020 and our friends (and their kids) rented #17 on the inner circle, right next to us with the playground right behind us. Great spots! Our kids were within easy eye and earshot of the playground," shares Tim J.
Weekend activities: Kentuck Campground at Ohiopyle State Park provides structured weekend programs during summer. The park offers family-friendly rafting opportunities on gentler sections of the Youghiogheny River. As one visitor put it, "This is a very nice campground. There are a multitude of fun activities to do in the area. There is rafting, kayaking, fishing, trails and more, all nearby."
Tips from RVers
Site levelness: Several campgrounds have uneven terrain that can challenge larger rigs. At Madison-Pittsburgh S.E. KOA, one camper observed, "I couldn't get it level with my Anderson levelers it was pretty slopped. On my way out I heard they were having someone come in to level the sites." Calling ahead to request level sites is recommended.
Grey water disposal: Mountain Top Campground offers an innovative solution for extended stays. "Since they sit atop the mountain, the grey water hookup is a long hose that has an adapter which hooks up to your black and grey tank outlet and it runs down the hillside of the mountain into the grassy area," explains Dave. This allows campers to use shower and sink facilities without frequent black tank emptying.
Laundry facilities: Larger RV parks like Madison-Pittsburgh provide industrial-sized laundry equipment. "Laundry facilities are the best we have encountered. Big machines and dryers making life easier and less time spent doing laundry," reports Mary Elisabeth D., noting this is particularly valuable for extended stays or multi-week trips through the region.
