The Washington-Pittsburgh SW KOA provides trash pickup service, but one visitor mentioned that "it was pretty sloped" and difficult to level their rig. Most campgrounds allow pets and offer trash service, with electrical options typically including 50-amp service for larger motorhomes.

    Tomlinson Run State Park Campground

    Nice little State Park

Tomlinson Run is a small state park situated in the northern panhandle of West Virginia nestled between eastern Ohio and western Pennsylvania. Plenty of things to do there including but not limited to…. Mini golf, hiking trails, biking, swimming, fishing, paddle boats, parks for the kids, and of course the camping. The campsites here are mainly gravel pads with the exception being the asphalt handicapped spots (2). Most spots are 30 amp with a few 50 amp (new for 2021). The park also has a few primitive spots available and some yurts and cabins to rent. I have a 38’ fifth wheel and the spots are tight for it (even the couple pull thru). Campground facilities are clean but dated. They state new facilities are coming soon. The campground is at the top of a hill and the spots are wooded and shaded. I would consider the camping to be spaced generously (room to stretch out). They have a small camp store and information available. A breakfast is available during peak season for a small fee. They do have water and a dump station available (free for campers to use).

    Bear Run Campground

    Loads to do...!

This campground is deceptively big! The nightly RV sites are close to the park entrance and are relatively flat. The campground hosts themed events, game nights and arts& crafts. There is a swimming pool and playground for the kids. It also has a small café that sells baked goods and coffee. On Saturdays they sell amazing Armish Donuts!

Further into the campground the sites turn to more permanent sites. Further up the hill are more cottages and camping. This campground is steep in parts and too large to walk efficiently. There is a fenced dog run area and a beautiful lake. All sites have fire rings. There is an onsite laundry, WIFI, onsite dump station and propane refill station.

You can also buy ice and firewood. The campground is gated. Lots to do at the campground and lots to do in the surrounding area. They welcome all furry friends!

    Raccoon Creek State Park Campground

    Raccoon Creek Camping

This is a large state park offering electric only sites

The sites are set amounts the forest and there are several loops to choose from. Loop F is pet friendly. All sites are within walking distance to amenities

Amenities are quite run down but functional

Wildlife is beautiful and its a short ~10min drive to the beach area of Raccoon Creek lake.

Two (2) dump station spots and fresh water taps location throughout the park

NOTE: Many sites are not level, you will require blocks/timber to level out campers. Tent campers should choose their site using the photos on the state park site.

All sites have a paved car space.

    Glade Farms Campground

    Quiet place to rest

We headed to ride the trails at big bear lake camplands and booked here considering a recent outbreak of covid at the lake. The on call staff met us at the gated community and helped us get situated on a shaded lot. Very nice and quiet with mostly seasonal or permanent snowbirds. Small pond/lake on the property and plenty of shade. The lot was a challenge to be centered and level which led to us exiting our camper downhill. The water access was in ground and I cant imagine a camping couple that's well beyond retirement finding that convenient but it didn't impact us. Pet friendly and large lots. Bathhouse was closed due to covid. No firewood at this campground to purchase but fire ring provided and picnic tables.

Kentuck Campground — Ohiopyle State Park

    Nice Pennsylvania State Park

Very large park with a variety of campsites ranging from tent, 20/30 amp, 50 amp, and yurts. Price is the same for all electric sites, regardless of amperage. There is a 40-foot maximum vehicle length allowed in the campground– not a problem for our 17-foot van but the staffer who checked us in remarked that many people come in with larger rigs trying to squeeze in and are unable to. We had no problem securing a site with no reservation on a Monday evening after Labor Day. Very close to two Frank Lloyd Wright properties– Kentuck Knob and the more widely known Falling Waters. Other things to do in or near the park include whitewater rafting, rail trail biking, hiking, zip-lining and touring Laurel Caverns. The nearby town of Ohiopyle has many outfitters and several restaurants. The sites are all located on roads leading off the main road; we stayed in a 20/30amp site on Cherry Road (Site 49). It was right next to the bathroom which was good and bad. Good for proximity but bad because we could hear the hum quite clearly. Also, the door to the women’s room would hit you in the rear quite forcefully unless you held onto it (it took me three times to remember to do this)! There was a dishwashing sink in the women’s room (and I’m assuming in the men’s room?); it was very clean, but the only downside was having to do the dishes by myself! Alcohol is prohibited. Only certain areas allow pets. Only one garbage/recycling station outside of the campground. Wood and ice are available 24/7 on the honor system– very nice not to have to wait until a host is on duty to get what you need. Quiet hours 9 pm-8 am, a bit longer than most campgrounds but except for some sites with campfires still burning with people talking, it was very quiet in this campground. Surprisingly strong cell signal for being deep in the woods.

    Outflow Camping

    Quiet campground

This is a lovely army corps of engineers campground. The sites are gravel and level. Most only have 30 amp electric hookup but water can be filled at the “gatehouse” (for lack of better description). There are 3-4 full hookup and a few 50 amp. It is well-maintained— lawns mowed, bathrooms cleaned, sites tidy. Bath house isn’t modern but showers are hot and have great pressure. Campground filled up on the weekend. The sites are a bit close to each other and are mostly sunny but it was quiet anyway. Lots of people fishing on the river—access right from the campground. Great Allegheny Passage trail also accessed from the campground. Boating on the lake too.

    Tomlinson Run State Park Campground

    Very wooded campground

General: 50-site (all but six with electric hookups) campground plus two yurts and three cabins. Two sites are handicap accessible.

Site Quality: The sites have gravel pads (except the handicap-accessible ones which were paved). The sites were completely covered with leaves when we were there which made it challenging to determine where the actual (narrow) pad was. Sites appeared to be level. A fire ring and wooden picnic table complete the site.

Bathhouse: A little dated but clean. Two of the stall doors did not latch properly. Didn't use the shower so cannot comment but there was a sign indicating it took a while for the water to warm up.

Activities/Amenities: There is a small camper store, laundry, and a playground. In season, there is lake swimming and a boat dock. There is a fishing area, mini-golf and disc golf, and several short hiking trails. Unfortunately, since we arrived late afternoon and had to depart early the following day (and were camping off-season), we could not take advantage of any of these things. What we lose in activities, we gain in a quieter camping experience with fewer crowds, which is generally preferable for us!

    Love Pioneer Park

Very friendly ownership. Always go out of their way to accommodate. Pleanty of very well maintaIned large sights all pull through. Great camp store, fire wood, fire rings, very clean facilities. Three large lakes, fishing. One of our very favorite places to camp with our 38 foot motorhome.

Guide to Trafford

Trafford, Pennsylvania RV campgrounds sit within the Laurel Highlands region at elevations ranging from 900-1,200 feet. The camping season typically runs April through October with summer temperatures averaging 75-85°F. Most campgrounds in the area offer a mix of wooded and open sites with varying degrees of privacy between neighboring campsites.

What to do

Fishing access: Bush Recreation Area provides shore fishing along Loyalhanna Creek with boat launch facilities for motorized watercraft. "The lake level was high because of the dam nearby so fishing was non-existent, but it was peaceful and pleasant," notes Tim J. about conditions during late summer.

Biking trails: The Blue Canoe RV Resort (formerly Uniontown KOA) offers direct access to the Great Allegheny Passage trail. "The GAP trail rolls right through the middle of this traditional KOA campground... If you are an RVer and seeking a place to park and ride along this trail, this is a perfect place to have the best of both worlds," explains Shari G.

Star gazing: Benner's Meadow Run RV Campground features a dedicated star gazing platform with mountain views. "Got a nice secluded spot to camp in the wooded area that had amazing mountain views and the star gazing platform," reports Tom C., though another visitor noted that "The star gazing platform leaves a lot to be desired and is in need of repair."

What campers like

Privacy options: Mountain Top Campground offers more spacious sites with distance between neighbors. "The sites are pretty spread out and spacious, so you have pretty decent privacy," writes Dave. The campground's elevated position provides valley views from certain sites, with another camper noting "Sites 41-48 are the best view at sunset."

Clean facilities: Pine Cove Beach Club RV Resort maintains modern shower facilities and a large swimming pool. "Great: The pool & concession stand, beautifully maintained lawns and gravel campsites, modern hookups, good shower/laundry facilities, nice fire rings with built in grills, trash pickup service," shares Heath T.

Large laundry facilities: Madison-Pittsburgh S.E. KOA features industrial-sized washers and dryers that campers particularly appreciate during longer stays. "Laundry facilities are the best we have encountered. Big machines and dryers making life easier and less time spent doing laundry," according to Mary Elisabeth D.

What you should know

Site levelness: Many RV campgrounds near Trafford require leveling equipment due to terrain. At Washington-Pittsburgh SW KOA, Kevin D. warns that "A dozen or so of the sites are not level, not only that but they are narrow and where you sit is a slope making it very uncomfortable."

Road access considerations: Some campgrounds have challenging approach roads. Mountain Top's location requires careful navigation: "The hardest part is finding it. The roads get narrow so if in an RV call them for the easiest way in," advises Corey L.

Off-season limitations: Campground amenities vary seasonally. At Bush Recreation Area, one visitor noted in late May: "Staff working hard getting things ready for the upcoming Memorial Day crush... the dump station is closed & undergoing construction."

Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Choose sites near play areas for easier supervision. At Bush Recreation Area, one camper recommends: "We rented space 16 late August 2020... on the inner circle, right next to us with the playground right behind us. Great spots! Our kids were within easy eye and earshot of the playground."

Scheduled activities: Benner's Meadow Run RV Campground organizes regular events for children. "Great place for kids! Family friendly atmosphere, cordial staff, well run campground. Lots of activities. Tree shaded sites!" writes Rob B.

Water recreation options: Several campgrounds feature swimming facilities. Fox Den Acres Campground offers fishing opportunities that engage younger campers. "We did watch kids fishing and pulling fish out as soon as they put their line in!! So much fun for them," reports Patience W.

Tips from RVers

Hookup variations: Grey water disposal options differ between campgrounds. At Mountain Top Campground, "Since they sit atop the mountain, the grey water hookup is a long hose that has an adapter which hooks up to your black and grey tank outlet and it runs down the hillside of the mountain into the grassy area," explains one RVer.

Site selection advice: At Mirror Lake RV Camping, waterfront sites offer scenic views but may have drawbacks. "Site 26 is our favorite. It has a huge back yard and easy access to the creek," recommends Mathew H.

Early arrival benefits: Fox Den Acres Campground offers flexible check-in. "No advance payment was required. You pay when you stay. I appreciate that in these times when other campgrounds require full payment in advance and don't give refunds," notes Judith R.
