What to do
Swimming and beach activities: Keystone State Park Campground features a large beach area on its lake with a designated swimming zone. "The park itself is gorgeous with a large lake and designated swimming area. Place attracts a lot of people in the summer as it's basically in the Pittsburgh suburbs along a major road artery," notes a camper.
Whitewater adventures: Ohiopyle State Park offers rafting opportunities for all skill levels on the Youghiogheny River. A visitor explains, "Time and finances limited us to a 'family friendly' float self-guided raft down the Middle Yough...laced with minimal Class 1 and 2 rapids, which I would classify as riffles. The float took three hours, was relaxing, serene and full of solitude."
Historical sites: Laurel Hill State Park Campground provides a convenient base camp for exploring nearby landmarks. "The campsite and bathrooms were clean when we arrived and when we left. The site numbering is a bit wonky on the door loop so make sure you look at your map before you start driving the loops," explains a camper who visited in June 2024.
Family entertainment: Water activities at Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Mill Run include multiple water slides and splash zones. "Mill run by far the best yogi bear/campground we have been to. Second time we have been & they have upgraded the water slides 4 huge slides plus big splash pad with little slide for smaller kids & the original 2 big water slides in woods," shares an enthusiastic visitor.
What campers like
Secluded cabin sites: At Ohiopyle State Park's Kentuck Campground, some cabins offer more privacy than others. "Kentuck Campground is a very nice campground, the sites are plentiful, and though there are many...there is enough foliage that separate campsites that it feels somewhat private."
Convenient trail access: Kentuck Campground — Ohiopyle State Park connects directly to popular trails. One cyclist commented, "Awesome campground right on the Great Allegheny Passage trail. We loved being able to access the GAP trail right from the campground."
Fishing opportunities: Multiple fishing locations at Pioneer Park Campground make it popular with anglers. "Wish we would have had more time here. Was end of summer so pool was also already closed. So many areas to fish that more time would have been great. Clean showers," reports a visitor.
Heated cabin options: Seasonal cabins typically include heating elements for cooler months. A camper at Laurel Hill State Park explained, "We camped for 1 night. We chose site 102 because it looked decent in the picture and seemed a little apart and more private than other areas. Unfortunately, it was not great for tent camping as there wasn't really a spot to set up our 4-person tent."
What you should know
Seasonal cabin availability: Kooser State Park Campground operates seasonally with limited availability. "The cabins are beautiful and nearly always booked--despite the fact that they sit awfully close to a noisy state highway," explains a visitor who recommends booking well in advance.
Bathroom conditions vary: Shower facilities differ significantly between properties. "Showers really need an update. There are no shower heads. Office is really hard to get in contact with," reports a visitor to Madison-Pittsburgh S.E. KOA.
Cell service limitations: Connectivity can be unreliable at many cabin locations. At Laurel Hill State Park, a visitor noted "Fleeting cell at best on Verizon," while another reported better luck at Ohiopyle: "Our Sprint hotspot didn't work well (unboosted), but our Verizon did."
Road access challenges: Some cabin rentals near Scottdale have complicated access routes. A camper at Ohiopyle warned about "the typically convoluted PA road system detour" when main roads were closed, requiring a "30-minute detour because... Pennsylvania."
Tips for camping with families
Kid-friendly cabins: The Blue Canoe RV Resort (formerly Uniontown KOA) offers family-oriented cabin accommodations. "The GAP trail rolls right through the middle of this traditional KOA campground. The seasonal RVers and weekend warriors have long claimed their sites, but for through riders on the trail there is a special place to camp," explains a visitor.
Activity planning: Schedule structured activities for children at campgrounds with organized programming. A visitor to Benner's Meadow Run notes, "Got a nice secluded spot to camp in the wooded area that had amazing mountain views and the star gazing platform. Kids had a great time and lots of activities for them to do!"
Playground access: Consider cabin proximity to play areas when booking with children. At Madison-Pittsburgh S.E. KOA, a guest advised that "If you HAVE KIDS young enough to have to keep an eye on the kabins and spots facing the pillow ARE PRIME (kids wait for it to blow up every morning), play ground (basic-not toddler friendly, there's a sand pit that's not covered up at night)."
Grocery planning: Stock up before arrival as store options are limited. Regarding Pioneer Park, one camper mentioned, "Very close to several state parks for great hiking and biking. Check out Moo Echo on rt 31 for awesome food!!"
Tips from RVers
Site leveling: Many cabin and RV sites require significant work to level. At Kooser State Park, a visitor warned, "Many of the sites are not level at all and take some serious work to get your rig level."
Hookup positioning: Benner's Meadow Run RV Campground has a reputation for well-maintained utilities. "We've been camping here for years. They are family oriented and not looking for large/loud groups. They accommodate tents and RVs, and offer cabins. The staff is helpful and friendly, and so are most of the campers," shares a regular visitor.
Off-season considerations: Lower occupancy during shoulder seasons can mean more privacy. A November visitor to Ohiopyle mentioned, "We were there in November with plans to visit Fallingwater. This campground was the perfect location for both activities! The campground was really nice and really empty in November when we were there."
Laundry facilities: Some parks offer robust laundry services that RVers appreciate. "Laundry facilities are the best we have encountered. Big machines and dryers making life easier and less time spent doing laundry. Nice little pool and lake for fishing," reports a camper who stayed at Madison-Pittsburgh S.E. KOA.
