Cabins at Raystown Lake offer rustic to modern accommodations surrounded by Pennsylvania's largest lake. The 8,300-acre lake sits within Huntingdon County where elevations reach 2,000 feet at nearby ridges. Summer temperatures typically range from 65-85°F with higher humidity levels in July and August.
What to do
Hiking and biking trails: Trough Creek State Park Campground offers access to scenic trails. "Leaning rock hike is fun. It has a nice hike up above a creek with a huge rock that appears ready to fall over the cliff with a simple touch. Very neat," notes one visitor.
Lake activities: Lake Raystown Resort and Lodge provides easy water access. "Large marina, prepared food is expensive though. Tackle shop and craft days, playground, overall great place," according to a camper who recommends bringing your own boat for the full experience.
Fishing spots: Good fishing opportunities exist at multiple access points. "Good for canoes/kayaks from Aitch boat ramp," mentions a camper at Pleasant Hills Campground, located just 15 minutes from the 8,000-acre lake.
What campers like
Privacy and shade: Pleasant Hills Campground features "all wooded sites with shade all day long. Quite/peaceful setting. Great for sitting and listening to nature," making it ideal for those seeking seclusion from summer heat.
Clean facilities: Raystown Lake / Saxton KOA at Four Seasons receives consistent praise for maintenance. "They keep the place spotless. It looks like they have recently remodeled the bathrooms/showers (3 of the 4 look brand new), and the pool has been crystal clear," reports a satisfied camper.
Level sites: Seven Points campgrounds offers well-designed camping spaces. "One backup attempt into the site and it was perfectly level... that was definitely a first for us. We set our chocks and started our setup. The picnic table had a new seat on one side and was in great shape."
What you should know
Varying terrain: Sites can have significant elevation changes. At Seven Points, "Senoia camp was tied with Ridge, but only the lower portion. Once you go up the hill to sites above #231, it gets very steep and far away from the water. Probably not too safe for kids on bikes."
Limited connectivity: Trough Creek State Park Campground has "no cell service at all, nor OTA TV. Water is available in the campground at various spots. Day use is busy, but campground is pleasantly quiet."
Road conditions: Access roads can be challenging. One camper notes, "Very rough road to get to campground" when describing the route to Pleasant Hills Campground, so plan accordingly with appropriate vehicles.
Tips for camping with families
Swimming options: Seven Points (PA) offers safe swimming areas. "We went down to the swim beach and our kiddo made sand castles and swam in the clear water," reports a family who found the designated swimming area clean and child-friendly.
Kid-friendly activities: Lake Raystown Resort provides structured events. "There's a pool, dog park, bounce pillow, playground," notes a visitor, while another mentions planned activities like "rock painting and then bingo and ended the night with a DJ dance party."
Site selection: Choose locations based on accessibility. "The sites were nice, there was some garbage left behind from prior campers but a nice layout," while another notes that Ridge Camp sites "are a mix of shaded and open sites. Large trailers can fit most sites."
Tips from RVers
Dump station quality: Seven Points features excellent facilities. "The ultra-cool 4 lane dump station... The signage was very well marked and the fresh water spigot was more like a little tank, super-solid, clean and modern."
Site leveling: RV sites vary in levelness. "Our site was not level but Terri had made ramps so that the front end would come up," reports a camper at Honey Bear Campground, demonstrating how staff help with challenging sites.
Campground layout: For larger rigs, consider which section to reserve. "Only the two loops on the water have this. The other four loops are all level spacious sites," explains a camper about Seven Points, noting that each area offers different advantages for different RV sizes.
