Best Dog-Friendly Camping near Seminole, OK

CAMPER SUMMARY PRESENTED BYFord

Sportsmans Lake accommodates campers with pets at multiple sites around the 15-mile shoreline, offering full hookup RV spaces, water/electric sites, and primitive camping options. Pets are welcome at all designated campsites with standard leash requirements in effect throughout the grounds. Catfish Round-Up RV Park in Seminole provides pet-friendly accommodations with water, sewer, and electrical hookups, allowing campers to keep their dogs with them while enjoying the adjacent restaurant. The Heart of Oklahoma Exposition Center maintains clean facilities where pets can accompany their owners, with grassy areas available for dog walking. Prague Lake Campground, Wewoka Lake, and Happy Acres RV Park all permit pets with varying amenities including picnic tables, fire rings, and access to shorelines for pets that enjoy swimming. The bathrooms at most locations are functional but reviewers note they could use more regular maintenance.

Dog-friendly trails surround many of the campgrounds, particularly at Sportsmans Lake where horse trails double as excellent pet walking paths through wooded areas. The lake is spring-fed and maintains comfortable swimming temperatures even on hot days, offering opportunities for dogs that enjoy water activities. Campers note that Sportsmans Lake feels secluded despite being only 10 minutes from groceries and supplies in town. Wildlife sightings are common, with raccoons, foxes, and various bird species making appearances throughout the day. Many campgrounds enforce quiet hours to minimize barking disturbances, and the resident lake rangers actively patrol to ensure safety. Prague Lake's campground offers paved pads for RVs, though reviewers mention they aren't perfectly level and might require adjustment. Most campgrounds in the area maintain year-round availability, allowing for seasonal camping options with pets regardless of weather conditions.

    Oklahoma City East KOA

    Six days of great

The people here are very nice and helpful. We stayed at this park for 6 days waiting for our new hitch to get there and everything was great. The bath house is very nice and there’s a great playground and dog park. I’m very happy we decided to pull in.

    Oklahoma City East KOA

    Busy campground with excellent management

Beautiful campground with plenty of amenities at a great price. The spaces were a good size to fit our 45’ toyhauler with 2 vehicles (and put the back patio down). There are a fair bit of trees, so big rigs use caution pulling into spaces.

Nice playground for the kids, pool was closed (opens Memorial Day to Labor Day), dog park is large and very well shaded. Laundry room is very clean and well kept.

Approximately 20-30 minutes from OKC zoo & science museum.

Overall wonderful stay with no complaints.

    Wewoka Lake

    Ok for a small lake

It's a small lake in Seminole County Oklahoma a couple miles from the town of Wewoka. It has a small RV campground and some primitive campsites along waters edge. It is always active with jet skiing. It has a swim beach and a few pavilions. The 4th of July festival is popular there and always a big hit. The park entrance is free. There is a small fee for launching boats kayaks are free to launch. The restroom is in the main campground which is bad if your at the swim beach or camping on a tent site because it's a long walk around the cove. The showers have only cold water. During the week there is always campsites. The lake is overcrowded on the weekends and during festivals. It's a Wednesday and not many camping today. It's also a very hot day 104 degrees.

Lake Thunderbird State Park - Rose Rock RV Campground

    Last Resort

Camp sites are very close together. Bathrooms are in a serious need of an update. Lake is about half a mile away from campground. There are little stickers everywhere that get into your pets fur and gets trapped in carpets forcing you to trash any rugs. Picnic tables are on the back side of the camp site to impossible to use.

Little Sandy Campground — Lake Thunderbird State Park

Crowded but a nice quick getaway

Hadn't been to Lake Thunderbird since I was a kid (40+ years ago) and all I could remember is that we always called it Lake Dirtybird because of the water. As far as that is concerned nothing has really changed. Typical central Oklahoma red water.

We stayed a couple of nights at Little Sandy Campground. There weren't any full hookups and we had to stay at a spot that was water and electric only ... and boy were we glad. The full hookup sites in the next campground over -- Hickory Hill -- were packed in like sardines. Our site on the upper loop of Little Sandy was away from all the hubub but also away from the water, so there was that. If you don't mind being right up against the next camper, Hickory Hill has some full hookup sites right on the water. However, the upper loop of Little Sandy was nice with all the trees and the better-spaced sites. In my opinion spot 36 is the best one. No one can camp behind you and there's a lot of space to the south. The dump site it up on the main road about a quarter of mile north from the campground entrance and easily accessible.
We stayed the first weekend of May 2020 ... the first weekend some of the COVID-19 restrictions were lifted. The place was PACKED, especially with tent campers. No judgment, just saying there were a lot of them. It was tough finding a path to the water without walking through someone's campsite. The water pressure was pretty low at the site and my guess it was due to all the sites being in use.
All in all it was a nice weekend, but I've stayed at nicer and quieter places.

Little Axe — Lake Thunderbird State Park

    Great State Park in Oklahoma

We had a great stay in Lake Thunderbird State Park near Norman Oklahoma. The park has 11 campground areas situated around the 6000 acre centerpiece lake with many tent, RV sites and some of those have full hook up; our choice was the Little Ax campground on the southern end just off Oklahoma 9. In addition to water activities the park offers hunting, horse rental and boarding, equestrian trails, hiking, mountain biking, nature trails, a nature center, and an archery range. Our lakefront site#37 was nice and shaded with a gentle lake breeze offering a concrete pad, water, 30/15 amp electric, concrete table, lantern holder, fire ring and grill at site. The campground has an entry station, camp host, picnic shelters, playground, bathhouse and laundry, beach area, common fire pit, Verizon 4 bars, dump station, trash receptacles, interior roads are paved, with many sites waterfront. RV sites are close quarters. Tent sites are amazing...pads, concrete table, fire ring, grill, water spigot dispersed, waterfront sites. The town of Norman has all the amenities: shopping, dining, groceries, fuel and yes, Walmart. The area is home to local wineries and breweries and also the hometown to actor James Garner. WARNING: Oklahoma State Parks charge a daily parking fee per vehicle of$10 in addition to the camping fee and they enforce it...just saying from experience...read the information carefully! 13101 Alameda Dr, Norman, OK 73026 GPS- 35.234940,-97.219224 for the Little Ax Campground.

Guide to Seminole

Sportsmans Lake spans approximately 15 miles of shoreline with spring-fed waters that maintain comfortable temperatures year-round. Located within 10 minutes of the city of Seminole, this pet-friendly camping destination offers easy access to supplies while preserving a secluded atmosphere. The lake prohibits jet skiing and water skiing, creating a quieter environment for anglers and paddlers.

What to do

Horseback riding trails: At Sportsmans Lake, equestrian enthusiasts can access dedicated riding paths for $3 daily or purchase an annual pass for $30. "This is a pretty decent little lake it's fishing only they do have a small swimming area there is a lot of horse trails which you can also hike and lots of different camp sites around the lake," notes Aaron T.

Kayaking on calm waters: The no-motorboat rule at Sportsmans Lake makes it ideal for paddle sports. Campers can enjoy peaceful paddling without competing with speedboats or jet skis. "It has become popular for kayaking," mentions Melanie W., adding that the lake has "3 boat ramps, 2 covered fishing docks."

Swimming at designated beaches: Little Axe at Lake Thunderbird State Park offers a sandy swimming area for pets and families. "Sandy beach area, sandy & walkable around lakes edge. Bathrooms & showers were like new & very clean," reports Christle C.

Night fishing: The shoreline access at many campgrounds allows for both daytime and evening fishing. Many campsites position directly along the water, providing convenient fishing access from your campsite. "Nice camp spots with full hookups and good water pressure. We will be back soon!" shares Amber D. about the lakeside sites at Sportsmans Lake.

What campers like

Wildlife viewing opportunities: Wewoka Lake provides habitat for various wildlife. "It has a small RV campground and some primitive campsites along waters edge. It is always active with jet skiing. It has a swim beach and a few pavilions," says Melanie W. The lake hosts an annual 4th of July festival that draws crowds.

On-site dining options: Catfish Round-Up RV Park features a restaurant with home-style cooking. "The adjoining restaurant is very good, very friendly," writes Dave M. Another camper elaborates: "They came around with apple fritters while we were looking at the menu, and when the meal was served they came around with fresh baked rolls. Good food, great staff."

Affordable camping rates: Sportsmans Lake maintains reasonable fees with primitive sites at $8, water and electric at $15, and full hookup sites at $20. Seniors receive discounted rates of $12 for water/electric and $17 for full hookup sites. Monthly camping options are available November through March at rates of $400-500.

Private coves and camping areas: The campgrounds around Sportsmans Lake are distributed across different coves, providing more separation between camping areas. "The campgrounds are actually located on the southwest side of the lake in cove 1 and cove 3, make sure you don't arrive after 10pm as you can then only access cove 2 and cove 4," advises Vanessa M.

What you should know

Gate closure times: Access restrictions apply at certain times. At Sportsmans Lake, gates lock nightly, and late arrivals have limited options. "Make sure you don't arrive after 10pm as you can then only access cove 2 and cove 4. You can camp late hours in those areas, but the population in this area is very active at 2am and it just isn't comfortable," cautions Vanessa M.

Bathroom conditions vary: While most campgrounds offer shower facilities, maintenance quality differs. At Prague Lake Campground, "Only 8 spaces with full hook ups, but you might be sharing utility poles. Sites are paved but not level you'll need to level your camper," reports Rod A., who also noted "bathrooms need lots of work."

Cell service limitations: Reception can be spotty depending on location. Prague Lake Campground gets "AT&T signal is 1 bar 5G" according to a recent review. This can affect communication and mobile internet access while camping.

Site leveling challenges: Some campgrounds feature paved but uneven sites. Rod A. notes that at Prague Lake Campground, "Sites are paved but not level you'll need to level your camper." Bringing leveling blocks is recommended for RVs at these locations.

Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Multiple campgrounds feature play areas for children. At Okemah Lake, Leslie N. reminisces about "play equipment from my childhood that built character and made me remember the good old days," adding that the grounds were "extremely peaceful & beautiful!"

Swimming areas with gradual entry: Designated swimming spots provide safer water access for children. "It has a nice swimming area and even on the hottest days the water feels good because it is a spring fed lake," notes Melanie W. about Sportsmans Lake.

Wildlife viewing opportunities: Keep children engaged with wildlife watching opportunities. Melanie W. mentions that at Sportsmans Lake, "There are many geese on this lake, they have there own island where they hatch their babies every year. Lots of raccoons and a couple foxes. At night you really hear a lot of coyotes and owls."

Ranger interactions: Park rangers at some locations take time to engage with young visitors. Kaitlyn T. appreciated that at Sportsmans Lake, "The park ranger stopped and played with my children telling them about the geese and where good fishing spots were."

Tips from RVers

Site selection for large rigs: At Happy Acres RV Park & Campground, big rigs are accommodated with 62 sites available. "For anyone looking for an overnight or long time stay around the Oklahoma City area this is the place. We were received with a smile as well as a free coffee cup," shares William M., adding "they have 32 acres of hiking trails."

Hookup variations: Most campgrounds offer different hookup options. Steve from Catfish Round-Up RV Park notes, "The campground is $27.50 per night, they have wifi, full hookup, and there are over the air tv stations. We are in a 33 ft class pulling a Jeep Wrangler, and we did not unhook the Jeep."

Overnight convenience factors: When planning an overnight stay, consider proximity to essentials. At Catfish Round-Up RV Park, "There is a restaurant within walking distance and fuel stations nearby," according to Dennis W., making it convenient for quick stopovers while traveling through the area.

Seasonal rate advantages: Sportsmans Lake offers monthly rates from November through March at $400 for water/electric sites and $500 for full-service hookups, providing an economical option for snowbirds or seasonal campers in pet-friendly camping near Seminole, Oklahoma.
