Lake Wister State Park offers multiple RV sites with concrete pads and hookups east of Heavener. The campground includes sites with water and electric connections, some with full hookups. Big Cedar Cabins & RV Park provides level RV sites with 50-amp electrical connections and sewer hookups approximately 15 miles south of Heavener. Honobia Creek RV Park maintains 20 RV-specific sites with both 30-amp and 50-amp electric options, water hookups, and sewer connections. Talimena State Park Campground features full RV hookups with 30-amp service and direct access to hiking trails. "The concrete pad was perfectly level and took no time to set up. There were 5 RV sites with full hook ups on isle, even though #4 and #5 are so close to each other that slide outs could bump into each other."

Several campgrounds in the region require advance reservations through Recreation.gov or by phone. Dump stations are available at Lake Wister State Park and select Corps of Engineers campgrounds, while some private parks offer full sewer hookups at individual sites. Pet policies vary, with most parks permitting leashed pets in designated areas. Cellular coverage fluctuates throughout the mountainous terrain, with stronger signals at higher elevations and limited service in valleys. One camper noted: "It's easy to get in and out of this rest area. There are plenty of parking spots for both big rigs and cars." Winter travelers should check seasonal availability as some facilities close bathhouses or reduce services during off-peak months.

      Springhill

      2 Days Nice

A little older of an area. Stayed in site B10. Close to level. We have a 36' 5th wheel, tow vehicle, plus another vehicle. Easy entry into site and large enough for all vehicles. Asphalt with concrete patio. There is a picnic table and fire ring. 50/30/20A We can kind of see the river from this site. Very roomy sites in the woods with plenty of shade. Mostly dirt ground. Older but clean restrooms. We didn't use them. There are single person combined toilet and shower rooms at the front of park. There are mountain bike/hiking trails all over, even a little bike park with ramps and jumps. Playground and boat ramp. No sewer hookups, but there is a dump station. Lots of mosquitoes in the evening. Although some sites need maintenance and the restrooms are old, this is a nice park. We stayed 2 days and would definitely stay again.

      Cossatot River RV Park

      Quiet, cozy, small rv park

We liked our week long visit here.. It was off the beaten path. Very quiet and peaceful. It seemed most people were gone during the day, maybe working. We explored the state park down the road and went on some fun drives. Easy pull through sites with full hook up. Dog friendly (I think) but there weren't any dogs running loose. There are also a couple cabins in the back it looked like.

**This rv park is not in walking distance to the Cossatot River

      Sallisaw-Fort Smith West KOA

      Convenient to I-40

This is KOA, not my favorite place to stop, but they have good, basic facilities, sort of like Motel 6. They are just off I-40, so it was convenient for a one night stop. The sites were level, and were Pull-Thru so we didn’t even unhook. Full hookups, Some shade, a dump station. The shower/bathroom was clean. There is a small store. They also have cabins and tent sites; Free Wi-Fi, cable tv, a pool and playground, and a pond for fishing. There is a small Kamp K9 (dog park). When we were there everything was wet, and the smell of wet creosote from the log yard next door was terrible.

Quarry Island Campground — Lake Wister State Park

      Quiet and Beautiful

We stayed at RV site #3 on Quarry Island. The concrete pad was perfectly level and took no time to set up. There were 5 RV sites with full hook ups on isle, even though #4 and # 5 are so close to each other that slide outs could bump into each other, and 2 very nice RV sites with only water and electric on the isle. There was also a lot of tent camping, flush and vault toilets, dump station, pavilion, 5 cabins, picnic tables with grills, boat ramp and swimming anywhere you wanted except for 150’ of the boat ramp. The ranger station was on the isle, so traffic was high at check in. There were 2 hiking trails that looked very nice, but never hiked because we were kayaking. My parents stayed in cabin #4 on the isle and my brother tent camped at Wister Ridge. The view from both of their places was breathtaking and his tent site was well shaded with maple, oak and pine. Fishing was very good and wasn’t a whole lot of boat traffic. There is also primitive camping which looked very nice, except for a couple of sites where the campers didn’t clean up too well behind themselves.

Pros: Beautiful area and amazing views. Everyone was very helpful and friendly. Plenty of options for accommodations and outdoor activities. The Heavner Ruinstone and Spiral Mounds are close. Tons of wildlife areas and we even spotted a bald eagle. The campgrounds and cabins were very clean.

Cons: RV sites can be very crowded and not well spaced, especially at Victor Landing. The Wards would be the least crowded for RVs. The booking website is not very good and not very accurate. The cabins bed was not very comfortable, the shower was small and flooded the bathroom while using and the kitchen light and living room ceiling fan was on one switch, so there was no way to have the fan going without the light on. Not all RV sites have picnic tables.

      Sallisaw-Fort Smith West KOA

      Many improvements since last time

This was our second stop at the KOA in Fort Smith AR. They have many improvements since out last stay. The campground is convenient to I-40. It’s far enough away to not have traffic noise. The sites are level, there is a pool, Propane, fishing pond, and camp store. Also hiking trails. Also some tent sites. There is a whole new section for Class A and large 5th wheel campers now. The are located behind a highway department facility, and last visit the smell of the treated power line poles was overwhelming. No problem this time. This is one of the few campgrounds I’ve been to that have a storm shelter!

      Springhill

      Quiet and Peaceful

Spacious level sites on concrete pads. Government operation so lawn maintenance is only adequate. Restrooms were clean. Didn't use showers but were available. Fishing nearby on river jetty or by the dam. Dump station is clean.

      Travelers Lane RV Park LLC

      Clean and peaceful!

Stayed here recently and it was a really convenient spot. They offer nightly, weekly, and monthly sites, which is nice depending on how long you’re planning to stay. All the sites have electric and water, and some have full hookups with sewer. If you’re in a site without sewer, there’s a dump station and water available on the way out, which made things easy. The location is a big plus, it’s right across the road from a pharmacy, laundromat, Dollar General, and O’Reilly’s, so you don’t have to go far for anything. There are bathrooms on-site, and they even have a small coffee shop in the office, which was a nice touch. It’s really close to Tyson, so I could see it being a great option for anyone working in the area. Even though it’s in town, it was surprisingly quiet during my stay. I enjoyed sitting outside in the evenings, there’s a fire pit and picnic tables that make it easy to relax after a long day. Overall, a solid, no fuss place to stay whether you’re just passing through or need something longer term.

      Cossatot River RV Park

Not a bad location for RVs and cabins near the Cossatot River but...

Given that the gorgeous Cossatot River has a State Park but its campgrounds are up a few miles of hilly gravel road and offer no plumbing or electricity, you may be searching for more comfy accommodations as a jumping off point to hike or kayak. Lake Gillham campground is unfortunately too far away to be convenient. The CRSP park rangers may mention this RV park, if you inquire, or you might find it yourself on a map. The location is convenient enough - just a few minutes' drive down the road from the Visitors Center. The owners are very friendly and helpful. The setting is adequate: it's close to the road and offers fire ring, picnic table, and a gravel pad. The thing that ruined our stay were some of the regular clientele who were downright creepy/frightening. Think, disintegrating trailers, abusive yelling late at night, unkempt heavy drinkers with leering eyes. In spite of the pluses, I would not feel comfortable staying here again. Perhaps the cabins are distanced enough from the RV part to feel safe.

    Guide to Heavener

RV campgrounds near Heavener, Oklahoma offer overnight and extended-stay options for travelers exploring the Ouachita Mountains. Most campgrounds in this region sit at elevations between 500-2,000 feet, creating variable temperatures throughout the year. Winter nights frequently drop below freezing from November through February, while summer daytime temperatures typically reach 85-95°F with high humidity.

    What to do

Hiking mountain trails: Winding Stair Campground provides direct access to the Ouachita National Recreation Trail. "The beautiful hike heads out of the camp, around the mountain to a rocky vista which probably has a cool view and then back on the opposite side of the highway to the campsite. From both the turnback point, and the beginning of the trail are opportunities to hope on the much larger Ouachita Trail," reports Jesse H.

Wildlife viewing: Fort Smith-Alma RV Park features a pond area with natural sounds. "The pond on the property has soothing sounds of peepers to fall asleep too," notes Julie F. Another visitor mentioned, "Nice pond along the tent camping area."

Historical sites: Riverfront RV Resort provides convenient access to regional landmarks. "Campground is adjacent to the Arkansas River and less than 2 miles from the Fort Smith National Historic Site," writes Joseph B. The location allows visitors to explore the U.S. Marshall's Museum, which is "literally down the block" according to Angela C.

    What campers like

Mountain views: Visitors to Winding Stair Campground consistently mention the scenery. "You are up on top of the Ouachita Mountains and there are beautiful views," notes Kelly Z. Another camper, Rachel H., describes it as a "really great experience and an absolutely gorgeous setting."

Clean facilities: Darby RV Community receives praise for its bathhouse. "The bathhouse was just like taking a shower at home," states Jamye W. Similarly, Riverfront RV Resort maintains "clean and secured" bathrooms according to Joseph B.

Quiet atmosphere: Lake Wister State Park provides peaceful surroundings during certain periods. "Very pretty campground, clean and relatively quiet this time of year. A very few campers here the week of Christmas 2020," reports Donna H. Another camper describes it as "A very enjoyable place. A bit crowded and noisy on weekends."

    What you should know

Site spacing concerns: Several rv campgrounds in Heavener, Oklahoma and surrounding areas have tight spacing issues. Fort Smith-Alma RV Park has sites where "you have to keep your blinds closed otherwise you find yourself looking right into the windows of your neighbors on both sides," according to Julie F.

Train noise: Love's RV Hookup in Vian offers convenience but with noise challenges. "This Loves RV stop is not at a truck stop so not as much noise. Great sites that are flat and level. 1-15 are full hookup but 16-18 do not have sewer. BUT the train that comes through several times a night uses their horn more than I have ever heard," warns Kevin K.

Variable bathrooms: Bathroom quality varies significantly between campgrounds. Rachel H. notes about Winding Stair: "The site felt really safe for me as a first time solo camper, and the scenery was beautiful. Really clean trash and litter wise, but dang…those bathrooms."

    Tips for camping with families

Recreational amenities: Lake Wister State Park offers family-friendly features. "Plenty to see and do besides fishing. The sites were good on every loop, more trees on some," explains one camper. Another visitor mentioned it was "A very enjoyable place."

Playground access: Riverfront RV Resort includes facilities for children. "Our kids enjoyed the playground, outdoor gym, and pickleball - it was too cold to swim," shares Angela C.

Bug awareness: Some camping areas have seasonal insect issues. Craig E. reports about Fort Smith-Alma RV Park: "Only complaint was these little red mites. I looked them up and they are harmless but they were numerous and made us uncomfortable. I was especially concerned for our 2 dogs."

    Tips from RVers

Site selection: Big Cedar Cabins & RV Park gets positive remarks from RVers for their level sites. "Really nice place, the owners are wonderful," notes Buddy M. The campground provides 50-amp electrical connections and sewer hookups.

Backing challenges: Lake Wister State Park has some sites that require careful maneuvering. "Our RV is 35 FT long and while it's rated for this length it was a little difficult to back into, because of surrounding trees," explains Rainy G. The camper adds, "Had to watch the slide with a tree close to set up."

Layout considerations: Cossatot River RV Park features a practical arrangement for RVers. "The park is clean, has standard RV hookups, and the highway isn't full of noisy traffic," reports Vanessa M. Another visitor noted it was "Quiet, cozy, small rv park" with "Easy pull through sites with full hook up."
