Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge sits at an elevation of 1,675 feet above sea level, providing a rare mountainous landscape in southwestern Oklahoma. The refuge spans over 59,000 acres and maintains a unique ecological profile with post oak and blackjack oak forests, mixed-grass prairie, and granite outcroppings. Temperature extremes range from below freezing in winter to over 100°F in summer, with camping areas distributed around lakes and within proximity to wildlife habitats.
What to do
Hiking Mount Scott: The highest peak in the refuge at 2,464 feet offers multiple trails with varying difficulty levels. Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge Doris Campground serves as an excellent base for hikers. "The Wichita Mountains is the park we frequent the most. It's only about an hour and a half from Oklahoma City and has really wonderful tourist center, trails, and campgrounds. The scenery of The Narrows, Charon's Garden, Elk Mountain, and the Holy City are wonderful," notes reviewer Dusty G.
Lake activities: Both motorized and non-motorized boating options available at multiple lakes within the area. Lake Lawtonka East Campground provides direct lake access. "Plentiful campsites with several spots right on the lake! Fairly close rather and no way to book ahead but we definitely enjoyed the location," writes Jenna L. Fishing licenses and boat permits required at many lakes.
Wildlife viewing: Early morning or evening offer optimal viewing times for bison, longhorns, and prairie dogs. "Coyotes, various snakes and tarantulas can be seen through these hills. Scores of fishable lakes dot the landscape. The Ferguson homestead still exists with its 'cannonball' architecture," explains Dave V.
What campers like
Clean facilities: Many campgrounds maintain well-kept restrooms and shower facilities despite high usage. "The campgrounds were very well maintained, maps were very easy to navigate! I felt safe setting up my tent and leaving it for the day while our group went out to hike," reports Meaghan V. about Doris Campground.
Variety of camping options: Sites range from basic tent camping to full hookup RV spots and cabin rentals. Lake Elmer Thomas Recreation Area offers multiple accommodation types. "A nice beach and cordoned swim area, complete with restrooms and shower house(11a-7p)…lifeguards, sand volleyball court, watersport rentals: paddle boards, canoes, kayaks, pontoon boat, mini golf course, disc golf course, RV/Camper area, rustic rental cabins, random primitive tent camping," details one comprehensive review.
Lakeside views: Many sites positioned with direct water access or mountain vistas. "Very picturesque. Nice sites right by the water. Clean, quiet CG. Make sure you have a long electric cable. Service was on the wrong side if you want to face the lake," notes Mimi B.
What you should know
Water availability concerns: Potable water access has been inconsistent at some locations. "Please note that at the time of this review (3/2020) there is NO potable water anywhere in the WMWR. An e.coli contamination in 2017 is still not resolved and any and all water is considered unsafe, including all streams and lakes. Bring in your own water, the closest store is at least 30 mins away," cautions Rebecca A.
Military activity proximity: Military Park Fort Sill Lake Elmer Thomas Recreation Area experiences occasional noise from training exercises. "Additionally, the campground is positioned along the northern side of the Artillery range. Yes, you will see and hear C-Ram's lighting up the sky randomly during the day and night hours, as well as other ordinance," explains Dave V.
Wildlife precautions: Bison, longhorns, and smaller wildlife frequently enter camping areas. "Free roaming Buffalo and Longhorn Cattle so dont be surprised if you see one in the Campground," advises William A. Secure food items and maintain safe distances.
Tips for camping with families
Recreational options: Multiple family-friendly amenities exist beyond standard camping. "There is enough to stay busy right here at LERTA. Canoe, kayak, paddle board and pontoon boat rentals to enjoy the lake. Fishing is permitted and schools of bluegill are seen along the shoreline. The water is incredibly clear. A very nice mini-golf course is located across from the offices," shares Dave V.
Visit educational centers: Plan day trips to visitor centers with exhibits about local wildlife and history. "Join 'Friends of the Wichitas' for exclusive tours of the private areas of the park and access to stargazing and wildlife events. Drive up Mount Scott for beautiful views of neighboring Lake Lawtonka, and wonderful sunsets," recommends Dusty G.
Pet-friendly considerations: Many campsites accommodate pets but require leashes and proper waste disposal. Collier Landing has open areas for pet exercise. "It's a nice part of Lake Ellsworth, however, it is definitely not a campground that is on my top ten list. There are port a potties, electric hookups and some water hookups. Plenty of space to throw a tent down and just camp openly," notes Resa H.
Tips from RVers
Utilities and hookup logistics: Access to water and electric varies significantly between sites. "Bring the long water hose! We are staying at the far end. The sites are nice. Covered picnic table on concrete w charcoal grill and stove tables. Even has a light over the table. Electric is on the pad, but the water spigot is 20-30' away," advises Ashley H.
Site selection strategy: Outer loop sites often provide better views and more privacy than inner loops. Buffalo Bob's RV Park offers concrete pads with space between rigs. "It's a nice clean Park, easy in and out. It's on the plain side, but all the sites have concrete pads and a little bit of space between rigs. The bathrooms and laundry rooms are all clean and functional," shares Robert R.
Reservations timing: Popular sites fill quickly, especially during peak seasons and weekends. "Weekends at WMWR (Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge) are very popular beginning early in the camping season making it difficult to find open spots by Friday evening. But that doesn't keep people from trying late into the night," warns Brad N.
