Calera sits near the Oklahoma side where summer temperatures often reach 90-100°F from June through August. Winter camping offers milder conditions with average temperatures in the 40-60°F range during daytime hours.
What to do
Swimming beaches and water access: Burns Run West has a sandy beach area ideal for dogs and families. "The beach is all along the shore. Really nice sand for running around barefoot and you can wade out a long ways. The bottom is all sand no rocks to step on," notes Melanie W. from COE Lake Texoma Burns Run West.
Fishing opportunities: The lake offers excellent fishing year-round, especially for striper. "We caught nice catfish off the big rocks. The sunsets and stars are beautiful," shares a visitor at Burns Run West. Lake Texoma RV Resort offers "great fishing! Some of the best hybrid Striper in the country," according to Kelly B.
Hiking options: The area features several marked trails connecting campgrounds. "There is a long equestrian trail that goes over to Lakeside Park across the lake that can also be hiked pretty easily that has a couple secluded spots to swim along the way. The trail is well marked and easy to follow," notes a camper from Platter Flats.
What campers like
Well-maintained facilities: Eisenhower State Park receives praise for its upkeep. "Bathrooms are always clean. Fellow campers are very friendly," says Susan F. from Eisenhower State Park Campground. Another camper mentions that "Most camp sites are shaded with pull through sites full hook ups, well maintained and quiet."
Spacious campsites: Many campgrounds offer good site spacing. "The sites were a good size and had lots of shade. We had an amazing view of the lake!" writes Christina H. at Burns Run West. Another review states that "Whoever designed this campground did a great job."
Pet-friendly atmosphere: Dog friendly campgrounds near Calera offer accommodations for four-legged companions. At Choctaw RV Park, "There's a small pond that had Canadian geese swimming in it... There's a kids playground, nice pool, and dog play area," according to Stephen K.
What you should know
Seasonal considerations: Summer heat can be intense. "In the summer it gets very hot, nice hiking," notes Alice R. at Eisenhower State Park. Lakeside Campground has experienced flooding issues. "It has flooded twice that I know of that caused the entire camp ground to be under water and closed for a lengthy time," reports Lee L. at Lakeside (OK).
Reservation requirements: Most campgrounds require advance booking through Recreation.gov or campground websites. "Make sure to reserve your spot online if it is near a holiday," advises a Lake Texoma RV Resort visitor. Holiday weekends fill quickly, especially May through September.
Varied camping options: Sites range from primitive to full-hookup. "Most rv sites are 30 amp. Section B is 50 amp. Sites are water and electric, no sewer sites. There are 2 dump sites on the way out," notes Rick V. about Lakeside Campground.
Tips for camping with families
Beach access considerations: Check water levels before planning beach activities. "The swim area in this park is down a pretty steep gravel trail that I had a hard time navigating. There is very limited bank access since the park sits about 50 feet up from the water line," cautions a visitor at Eisenhower State Park.
Equestrian camping: Families interested in horse-related activities have specific options. "Half of the campground is an equestrian camp. There are great hiking trails and beautiful views. Good shady spots. We had two kids with us and we loved walking around the campground and seeing all the horses!" shares Rachael H. from Platter Flats.
Playground and recreation areas: Some campgrounds offer dedicated children's facilities. At Riverview RV and Recreational Park, "They have a playground and dog area" according to Ryan H. Burns Run West offers "Lots of shade trees" which provides relief during hot summer days.
Tips from RVers
Level sites and hookup availability: Concrete pads are available at several campgrounds. "Roads and Pads were perfectly paved and level. Safe atmosphere with gated access," notes Nick & Allyssa S. at Riverview RV Park. Another camper reports "Nice level pads, full hookups and a view of the river."
Campground security: Several RV parks offer enhanced security features. "Gated security, general store, propane and shower houses. Lots of golf carts and full timers," mentions Ryan H. about Riverview RV Park.
Convenience amenities: Casino-adjacent campgrounds offer unique features. At Choctaw RV Park, "They have a shuttle that comes right to your spot to take you to the casino. Cable tv and a great pool as well!" explains Chris P. The park is described as "Beautiful clean park with great facilities and amenities. Large concrete pads and shuttle to the casino."
