What to do
Water activities at Lake Erie beaches: Sterling State Park features a sandy beach on Lake Erie that's regularly maintained. "The park also has several public access areas and beaches. Hiking and biking trails are also present and the bathroom facilities are clean and well maintained," notes Edward C.
Island exploration: South Bass Island State Park Campground offers unique cabin experiences with cliff-side views. "The property has mature trees for good shade & there is easy water access for paddling & fishing. There is a small onsite restaurant/bar, with many more eateries, bars, and wineries a short bicycle or golf cart ride away," shares Blythe J.
Nature observation: Kelleys Island State Park Campground provides opportunities to view wildlife and geological features. "Amazing small town feel with cute shops, family activities, world's largest glacier groves, shallow beach and fun history. No city lights and being in the middle of the lake means lots of stars, the sounds of water and being so dark you can barely see," explains Daniel U.
What campers like
Shoreline cabin sites: East Harbor State Park Campground offers cabin rentals with water views. One camper noted, "I enjoy this campground because there are lots of great spots to choose from. I love the ability to walk or bike to the beach. The camp store has all the necessities you may have forgotten."
Privacy between cabins: Many campers appreciate the layout at Maumee Bay State Park Campground, where cabins are separated by natural vegetation. "All sites are very generous in size and appear to be spaced with a decent amount of space apart with foliage providing varying levels of privacy. Some have beautiful trees that in peak fall color would be stunning," shares Lee D.
Clean facilities: Harbortown RV Resort receives praise for its well-maintained cabin and bathroom facilities. "This is a nice campground. Relaxing and quiet. There are paths to ride your bike or just walk," comments Barry H.
What you should know
Seasonal availability: Most cabin rental facilities have limited availability during peak summer months. At Monroe-Toledo North KOA, the season runs "from 5/15 to 11/1" according to their information.
Reservation requirements: Advance booking is essential for cabin rentals, especially for weekend stays. "Check-in crew were real nice. Most sites have some trees. Large playground for kids if you have them," says Henry O. about Toledo East-Stony Ridge KOA.
Weather considerations: Lake Erie weather can impact your cabin camping experience. "Some time in June you can expect May Flies aka Fish Flies. Plan accordingly. Finally, I've never been to this park when it wasn't very windy," warns Edward C. about Sterling State Park.
Tips for camping with families
Activities for children: Harbortown RV Resort provides numerous family-friendly amenities. "This campground has everything! Go carts, playground, disc golf, pool, ext... Just a one night stay to visit a friend. If you have kids it is perfect!" explains Noel L.
Biking opportunities: Flat terrain makes biking accessible for all ages. "It is also an amazing place to ride bikes, everything is flat and there are also plenty of bike paths. You are also close to the lake which I love," recommends Kayla H. about Maumee Bay State Park.
Unique accommodations: Cannaley Treehouse Village offers an alternative to traditional cabins. "This little village was so much fun for my 2 little people! I think 1 night is plenty as the site itself doesn't offer a ton of amenities but there are some trails that you can walk/bike without leaving base," shares Leah R.
Tips from RVers
Utility connections: When booking cabins, check for available hook-ups if needed. "Our site was $59.95 a night. We had Full hook-up with a gravel pull-through. The site was easy to level," notes Julia H. about Toledo East-Stony Ridge KOA.
Site selection strategies: At East Harbor State Park, experienced campers recommend choosing sites carefully. "The key is site selection at East Harbor...we happened to be in section C which was a newer section of the park. Section C was nice, though in hot sunny days there is very little shade to protect you," advises Mark S.
Transportation considerations: For island cabins, plan your ferry transportation carefully. "Access is via ferry. If you chose to leave your car on the mainland (free parking there) & pack in there are multiple sources for golf cart & bike rentals," recommends Blythe J. about South Bass Island.
