Sunset Lake Campground and Rustic Lakes Campground accommodate pets at all campsites with specific leash policies to maintain the quiet, relaxing atmosphere noted by frequent visitors. Both parks feature spacious, well-spaced sites that provide comfort for campers with animals. The grounds are clean and sites are grassy at Sunset Lake, though heavy rains can create muddy conditions that pet owners should consider. ['Campgrounds near Spencer, Ohio are listed with photos on The Dyrt.'] Findley State Park Campground offers additional pet-friendly options with a mix of primitive and electric hookup sites under tall pine trees. Most campgrounds in the area maintain standard pet policies requiring leashes no longer than six feet, proper waste disposal, and pets never left unattended.

Several miles of hiking trails around Findley Lake provide excellent exercise opportunities for dogs, with the main lake loop offering water views while keeping pets safely on trail. The well-maintained paths have minimal poison oak along edges where campsites meet wooded areas. Campers seeking water activities can access Sunset Lake's fishing areas where pets are welcome on shorelines but must remain leashed. During summer months, algae blooms occasionally affect water quality at area lakes, potentially creating hazards for dogs who swim or drink from the water. Wildlife encounters are common, particularly with deer and raccoons, requiring vigilant leash control. Nearby Wellington provides emergency veterinary services approximately 10 minutes from most Spencer area campgrounds, with pet supplies available at local stores.

      Outstanding site in great campground

Stayed on a premium patio site and loved it. The campground and staff were awesome. Level site, great hook ups, awesome WiFi and cable. Clean facilities, 3 lakes (one with a fishing pier), 2 dog parks, and super friendly staff. 30 min to Cleveland. Walmart, gas stations and restaurants within 5 miles. Just off Ohio Turnpike, but can't hear it. Definitely recommend this KOA

      Silver Springs Campground

Great for the price and location

Stayed here to be close to the NP and it is a great little campground for a reasonable price. Big dog park with pond on the other side of the park. Sites are uneven but my favorite part was the wooded path.

      Nice campground near Cuyahoga

We were in the area exploring Cuyahoga Nat Park and found Silver Springs. It was 18$ for a site with electric hook ups (15$ if you are a Stow resident) No option for no paying less for no hook-up camping. Water close by and port a pottie style bathrooms close to the camp sites. There are flush toilets a walk away but we didn’t use them. Sites are big and grassy but not super level. Wasn’t a big issue for us but could be for a bigger camper. The campground was calm and quiet. Lots of trails close by. Dog park down the street as well as a play ground and fishing pond! We had a great few days staying here and will be back if we are even passing thru Stow again.

      Silver Springs Campground

      Lots of options!

We really loved this little spot! It appealed to all of what we were looking for, our camp host was awesome. There was even a dog park within walking distance- a lot of trails to explore too. No showers and the Porto potties weren't the cleanest... But they were functional. Very hospitable locals- we were invited to a square dancing party that evening in the park! Very comfy and safe.

      Silver Springs Campground

      Great parking

The bathrooms are portojons and there are no showers, however there is THE best dog park I have ever seen in this area. So my dogs loved this campground more than me and that was worth it. It was dark enough to see a space station cross the sky at night. The camping spaces are rather close, but so many people want to camp there, because of its proximity to everything amazing.

    Guide to Spencer

Campgrounds near Spencer, Ohio offer pet-friendly accommodations in a region marked by rolling hills, deciduous forests, and inland lakes. The area gets significant rainfall with annual precipitation of 39 inches, requiring campers to prepare for potentially muddy conditions especially in spring. Most campgrounds remain open from April through mid-October with limited winter availability.

    What to do

Hiking with dogs: At Findley State Park Campground, guests have access to multiple trails surrounding Findley Lake. "Wonderful state park with lots of trails and a lake. Took the kayaks out on the lake and had a great time," shares Linda R. The paths accommodate various skill levels with well-marked routes.

Fishing access: Multiple lakes provide fishing opportunities within short distance of campsites. At Sunset Lake Campground, the main lake allows catch-and-release fishing with designated shoreline areas where leashed pets can join owners. "This is a very quiet and relaxing campground. The grounds are clean and the sites are very well spaced," notes Carrisa P.

Swimming options: Swimming lakes and pools are available at several campgrounds with varying pet policies. "Nice clean campground with lots of activities and also amenities the bathrooms and shower house were clean as well felt so comfortable made lots of friends," reports John C. about American Wilderness Campground. Many swimming areas require life vests for children under 12.

    What campers like

Space between sites: The campgrounds provide adequate room between sites compared to more crowded destinations. "We enjoyed the shade at our site this week and the space between us and our neighbors," writes Kimberly C. at Findley State Park Campground. This allows for privacy while maintaining a community atmosphere.

Clean facilities: Campers consistently mention well-maintained shower houses and restrooms. "The grounds are clean and sites are grassy," notes Ro B. about Sunset Lake Campground. "My wife and I visited in early May 2023, they were just starting to open things up after drying out. The camp hosts were super friendly about helping get us arranged and everything we needed."

Family activities: Organized events keep children entertained at many locations. At American Wilderness Campground, "We loved the beach and the fun we have had this is our favorite place to camp and we love this family local owned business because they love making people happy and it shows," according to Mallory N.

    What you should know

Reservation timing: Popular weekends book quickly at most Spencer area campgrounds. "The only downfall is trying to find an open spot for reservations. Place is booked most of the time. If you're planning a holiday weekend you need to book 6 months in advance," advises Jeffrey L. about Findley State Park Campground.

Site terrain variations: Campsite quality varies significantly within the same campground. "Dirt in the campsites is packed super tight, it's hard to drive tent stakes. However, it's flat enough where it isn't really an issue," explains Evan D. about his experience at Findley State Park.

Water quality concerns: Maple Lakes Campground provides clean water access but conditions vary seasonally. "This may be Heaven on Earth! The loveliest of settings. Friendly helpful staff- super well cared for nestled in the prettiest neighborhood," reports Kimberly L. Water testing results are posted at most campground offices.

    Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Several campgrounds maintain play areas for children. "Nice, clean pool area. Good sized playground. Great for kids," notes Susan G. about Cleveland Jellystone Park. Sites closest to playgrounds book quickly during summer months.

Entertainment options: Look for campgrounds offering structured activities. "Large campground with a nice mix of seasonal and overnighters. Clean common areas. Nice pool, camp store on site with a nice selection of camp gear. Snack bar with pizza, ice cream etc. Tons of planned activities for the kids," shares Kathryn P. about Cleveland Jellystone Park.

Safety considerations: Some swimming areas have limited supervision. For pet-friendly camping near Spencer, Ohio, parents should note varying lifeguard coverage. "My kids had fun," reports Amy S. simply about her Findley State Park experience, though parents should maintain close supervision near water.

    Tips from RVers

Site selection importance: For pet owners with RVs, choosing the right site matters. At Willow Lake Park, "Staff is very courteous and campground was usually pretty quiet with a large open field to walk dogs," mentions Tina R. Corner sites typically offer more space for pets.

Hookup variations: Not all campgrounds offer full hookups despite advertising electric service. "I overheard our neighbors say they would never stay there again, so I asked what their experience had been. They complained about the loud neighbors, charges for visitors, and they paid for a dump but the person never showed up," reports Brandy S. about Willow Lake Park.

Seasonal restrictions: For those traveling with pets, many Spencer area campgrounds have reduced services in shoulder seasons. "The sites themselves are fine. Nice and level with a firepit," notes Derek N. about Willow Lake Park, though amenities like showers and camp stores often operate on limited hours outside peak season.
