The cabins near Perrysville, Ohio range from basic to deluxe accommodations nestled within the rolling hills of Mohican Country. This region sits approximately 1,100 feet above sea level with seasonal temperature variations that influence camping experiences. Winter cabin rentals typically maintain 40-50°F temperature differences between outdoors and heated interiors.
What to do
River activities: Float trips down the Mohican River run from 7 to 20 miles. Mohican Wilderness offers canoe, kayak and tubing options. "I've been going to Mohican Wilderness since the Early 90's... My only knock on this campground is the county Sheriff maintains too strong of an overnight presence I have seen many campers harassed for no real reason," notes William P. about the Mohican Wilderness.
Primitive camping: Free backpacker sites located about one mile from parking areas. Mohican State Park Campground offers no-cost primitive camping options. "There are 10 free camp sites for backpackers in Mohican, each is about a mile hike in, no vehicles can reach these sites. There are 4 on the mountain bike trail and 6 on the horse trails, first come first serve, no reservations," writes John H.
Indoor recreation: Heated pools and game facilities available during cold or rainy weather. "The staff is friendly and the indoor pool and shower houses were amazing," reports Renee L. about Mohican Adventures. Winter camping benefits from these all-weather facilities when temperatures drop below freezing.
What campers like
Spacious riverfront sites: Sites along the Mohican River provide direct water access. "We tent camped and had a private spot in the woods which we loved. The campgrounds covers all the basics. We fished and swam in the indoor pool which was not heated at the time," shares Lo H. about Mohican Adventures Campground and Cabins.
Secluded winter camping: Off-season visitors experience significantly fewer neighbors. "Camping in the off season is our favorite time of year. This particular park has potable water on by the dump station and the dump station is open. The water at the full hook up sites are turned off. No cell service with Verizon at this park," explains Andrea F. about Mohican State Park Campground.
Family-focused amenities: Dedicated facilities for children. "They have a pool and playground. We like this spot since it is close to the Mohican river if you want to go tubing. Showers and bathroom were pretty decent," notes Kelly L. about Toodik Family Campground Cabin & Canoeing.
What you should know
Site conditions: Some cabins and sites positioned on slopes or uneven terrain. "Nice people... the only complaint is that the sites are not flat," reports Maria K. about Mohican Adventures Campground. Bring leveling blocks for campers or RVs at most locations.
Seasonal operation: Many accommodations close from November through April. Pleasant Hill Lake Park Campground offers year-round options for those seeking off-season cabin rentals. "We have stayed 2 nights on site 304 which was electric only by choice and when we return we will opt for full hook up since those sites look brand new," notes Korinne K.
Cabin reservation windows: Peak season bookings require 3-6 month advance planning. "Large campground. Boat docking is available. I just love love the beach lake. Great entertainment too. New shower houses by the beach. Great staff. Very friendly and helpful," shares Karrie Kat W. about Pleasant Hill Lake Park Campground.
Tips for camping with families
Playground access: Multiple play areas distributed throughout larger campgrounds. Whispering Hills Campground Recreation offers numerous child-friendly activities. "My family and I had a Blast at Whispering Hills. So many activities for the kids to do and my kids were able to walk around freely without us having to be right on top of them. The jumping pad, mini golf, fishing, basketball and all the other activities were great," reports Ryan H.
Educational opportunities: Working farm experiences available for children. "I found Malabar Farm in Lucas, OH on my way home from Mom's house... Louis Bromfield was a conservationist and among many other things (including winning a Pulitzer) he was in the forefront of organic and self-sustaining gardening. This place is amazing! (and would be an excellent home schoolers camping trip!)," suggests Shelly S. about Malabar Farm State Park Campground.
Water safety considerations: River water levels fluctuate seasonally affecting activities. "We went in July. It was incredibly crowded... we did not kayak the river bc there were just too many people on the river, the water was low due to lack of rain this summer," cautions Lindsey about Mohican Reservation Campground.
Tips from RVers
Site selection strategy: Request sites away from high-traffic areas. "We tent camped and had a private spot in the woods which we loved. The campgrounds covers all the basics," shares Lo H. about Mohican Adventures Campground.
Power options: Limited 30-amp and 50-amp availability at some locations. "We camped here off season and had the place to ourselves. We had a pull through site which was gravel. The staff is friendly and the indoor pool and shower houses were amazing. The sites seemed a little small so it might feel crowded during peak season," notes Renee L. about Mohican Adventures.
Winter hookups: Water connections shut off during cold months. "This particular park has potable water on by the dump station and the dump station is open. The water at the full hook up sites are turned off," explains Andrea F. about Mohican State Park Campground. RV winter campers must fill onboard tanks before settling at sites.
