Barberton, Ohio camping destinations sit in the Tuscarawas watershed with elevations ranging from 950-1,100 feet. The region experiences four distinct seasons with summer temperatures averaging 70-85°F, ideal for camping from May through October. Winter camping options remain limited with only select campgrounds offering year-round access.
What to do
Fishing opportunities: Nimisila Reservoir provides shore fishing and non-motorized boat access. "Beautiful clean quiet forest area. Sites are large and open. No gas motors. Just a beautiful scenic area close to home," notes a camper at Nimisila Reservoir Metro Park Campground.
Amish Country exploration: Visit local artisans and food producers within 30 minutes of many campgrounds. A visitor at Berlin RV Park & Campground shared, "Spent the weekend here while visiting Amish country in Ohio. Good dry firewood is available for $3 a bucket (basically a dollar a stick) which, I thought, was a pretty good deal."
Indoor recreation: Several campgrounds offer climate-controlled activities during inclement weather. "The game room was nice as well as the indoor pool. The park is in Amish areas so there is plenty of shopping to do. The camp store is stocked with lots of fun stuff and even had a cozy fireplace and rocking chairs," writes a winter visitor to Evergreen Park RV Resort.
What campers like
Clean facilities: Bathroom cleanliness ranks high in camper satisfaction. "SPOTLESS bathrooms and I mean SPOTLESS. Lots to do for kids: Sand Volleyball, basketball court, tetherball, corn hole area and playground," reports a Labor Day weekend camper at Berlin RV Park & Campground.
Private shower setups: Many campgrounds feature individual shower rooms rather than communal facilities. "Restroom/shower facilities are excellent. There are three showers in each of the mens and womens sides. Each shower has a locking door and a sink. Everything was very clean," notes a reviewer at Countryside Campground.
Wildlife viewing: Seasonal bird migrations and resident wildlife enhance camping experiences. "Went to this nice little spot with 4 kids, the hound and my wife. The 9 tent sites are very large and spacious. The Buckeye trail connects to the footpath down to the reservoir," reports a Countryside Campground visitor.
What you should know
Pet restrictions vary: Policies range from complete prohibition to designated pet areas. At Maple Lakes Campground, one visitor noted, "You aren't allowed to walk a dog around the park which was a very odd rule. Had to stay at your site."
Water access limitations: Not all campgrounds provide potable water. "Please do not make the mistake I did. There is no running water here. No showers, nothing to wash with or drink. You must bring in your water," warns a Nimisila Reservoir camper.
Site spacing considerations: Campsite proximity varies significantly between locations. "Although my recent visit to do a recon for a seasonal site was in the off season, it was a really good first impression. Sites had a bit of space so that was nice," observes a Countryside visitor.
Tips for camping with families
Playground access: Some campgrounds offer direct visibility to play areas from campsites. "I love that if you pick the right spots- you can keep an eye on the kids at the playground & riding bikes to/from the dock straight down the park road," advises a visitor to Whispering Hills Jellystone RV Park.
Activity planning: Many campgrounds schedule family-oriented events on weekends. "This campground was great. My boys were able to walk across the road to get to the pond that was well stocked with fish. It was catch and release but they were very excited to pull in some big ones," shares a Whispering Hills camper.
Tent site selection: Established tent-only areas often provide better accommodations for families without RVs. "Look for spots with lots of fallen pine needles- they are several inches thick and make nice padding under tent!" recommends a Nimisila visitor.
Tips from RVers
Electrical capacity planning: Determine your power needs before booking. "Our site was a normal gfi outlet and couldn't run a/c and air fryer, no biggie we did wings over a fire," explains a visitor at Lake Wapusun RV Resort.
Site leveling challenges: Prepare for uneven terrain at some rv parks near Barberton, Ohio. "We camped at site #10. Was level side to side, lots are pretty tight in that area. Advice - get there early or you'll have many vehicles and campers to watch for as you back in!" shares a Countryside Campground RVer.
Seasonal considerations: Off-season camping offers more privacy but fewer amenities. "We camped here the second weekend in December and had the park mostly to ourselves. There were only 3 other campers there. The park is in Amish areas so there is plenty of shopping to do," notes a winter visitor to Evergreen Park.
