Best Dog-Friendly Camping near Alum Creek Lake

Alum Creek State Park Campground features spacious, private sites surrounded by trees and brush, allowing up to two leashed dogs per site without breed restrictions. Dogs must remain under physical control at all times, with a six-foot leash requirement enforced throughout the park except in designated off-leash areas. Full hookup sites accommodate RVs while several tent camping sections welcome pets. Cross Creek Camping Resort and Sunbury/Columbus North KOA Holiday both provide pet-friendly cabins with small additional pet fees. Berkshire Campgrounds permits pets year-round with proper vaccination documentation. Most campgrounds provide pet waste stations, water access, and designated walking areas. The fenced dog park area with lake access gives pets a place to swim and exercise freely during summer months.

Trail access varies seasonally with multiple hiking paths allowing leashed dogs throughout the campground and surrounding park areas. Alum Creek's small campground beach provides water access for campers, though some reviewers note the sites can flood during heavy rain. Most campgrounds enforce quiet hours starting at 10 p.m. when excessive barking must be controlled. Cardinal Center Campground and Mt. Gilead State Park both feature connecting dog-friendly trails through wooded areas. Tree Haven Campground offers seasonal camping from May through November with water and electric hookups suitable for RVs with pets. The Sunbury/Columbus KOA Holiday maintains a dog-friendly atmosphere with clean facilities, though sites are typically close together with little privacy between neighbors. Veterinary services can be found within 10-15 minutes of most campgrounds, with the closest emergency clinic located in Delaware.

    Alum Creek State Park Campground

    A Wonderful State Park

First off we have to say that Ohio State Park campgrounds are some of the best we’ve ever stayed in. Most Ohio state park campgrounds have spacious sites with trees or other foliage between campsites so lots of privacy and a feeling of being apart from other campers. Alum Creek is no different. The ODNR has upgraded a number of the sites to FHU though most are still electric only. Alum Creek Lake is a large reservoir (by Ohio standards) that has excellent fishing, plenty of undeveloped shoreline to explore from kayaks, canoes or paddle boards and a very large beach. Not as many hiking trails as most state parks but you’re not far from High Banks Metro Park in Lewis Center that is a beautiful park with miles of trails along the Olentangy River. We love Alum Creek and will stay again for sure.

    Scioto-Grove Metro Park

Can only stay there on Fridays and Saturdays

Only weekend stays and it ends in wintertime. I’m sure it’s pretty and all, but it’s hard to find legit, free dispersed camping in Ohio! Oh well, rest stops always work for car camping.

    Alum Creek State Park Campground

    The dog’s favorite campground!

This was the only park we’ve gone to this uear with both a large dog park AND a fenced in dog beach! Folks were friendly at the dog park with bunches of chairs set around like a conversation pit. Lots of water and dog tennis balls were available.

The dog beach was fenced so your dog can be off leash. There is even a fenced in area out in the water to keep the pooches from swimming across the Lake chasing geese.

The campground itself was quite nice and spacious. Some of the most private camping sites I’ve seen in Ohio. Shower facilities we a bit above average mad seemed to be looked after at least once a day (we were there in the off season).

IMHO, one of the nicest campgrounds in the state.

    Cross Creek Camping Resort

    Very nice resort

We stayed two nights here on our tour of Ohio. After staying in state parks, the narrow sites are close with no privacy. Our pull through site was on the (inner) road, so lots of golf carts, cars and campers passing by. All pull through sites are on the road side. The site is not level and our leveling system has the front wheels off the ground. Many full time units here beautiful patios and decor. Staff is nice and friendly. Trash pickup isn’t offered and the walk to dumpster would be excessive for unfit or handicapped. We would stay again. Amenities are clean, as described and dog Park is immaculate but small.

    Alum Creek State Park Campground

Beautiful State Park close to Columbus Ohio

Alum Creek State Park is a beautiful park and great campground just outside the hustle and bustle of downtown Columbus and minutes away from attractions such as the Columbus Zoo.

The campground has good sized sites and is wooded throughout with clean bath houses, well maintained roads, and easy access for big rigs.

There is also a very nice dog park in the park including dog beaches with lake access for your pups to swim.

We love this campground and the beautiful lake and appreciate the easy access to local attractions, shopping, and more.

    Alum Creek State Park Campground

Would be 5 star except for this

Alum Creek is just beautiful, nice sites, most of them are at least partially shaded, lots of woods, hiking trails, the lake, it is what I think of when I think of State Park campground camping in Ohio. There are a couple problems. 1. Only ONE little dump station. This is a big campground, so if you're leaving Sunday, you better get up at the crack of dawn to get to the station, otherwise be prepared to wait in a long long line of RV's. We by-passed the long line and stopped at a different State Park campground on the way home and paid 10.00 to use their dump station. 2. They never answer their phone at the campground office. I mean NEVER. If you have a question you will just have to deal with the reserveamerica people who really know nothing other than what they read on the campground website. So basically you know as much as they do. It's maddening. We will go back, but it's a 2 hour drive so it won't be anytime soon.

    Alum Creek State Park Campground

    Alum Creek State Park Campground

great state park campground. There are some full hook ups but mostly just electric. They have pancake breakfast on Saturday mornings through summer and doughnuts on Sunday. Helpful camphost. There is a campground beach and boat launch. Lost of hiking paths in the campground and in the park area. A great dog park with lake entrance for the pups. tmThere is also some mountain bike trails. Plenty to do for everyone.

    Alum Creek State Park Campground

Beautiful State Park with extra perks for the Dogs

In addition to having a pretty lake, lovely campsites that are spread apart nicely, clean facilities, lots of shade, boat ramps, etc.. this park is unique for it's Dog Park facility.

2 large fenced in field areas. One for small dogs, and one for large. There is enough room for several games of dog frisbee to happen at once. Then, there are 2 large fenced in areas for lake access. Balls, dog doo bags, trash bins.. all there. Lots of shade, water fountains, and plenty of running room. I can't rave about this park enough!

The only downside is there is poison ivy lacing the trail from the campsite down to the water, and the Dog Park portion is about 2 miles from the campsites.

Guide to Alum Creek Lake

Alum Creek Lake spans 3,387 acres in central Ohio with a 4,630-acre state park surrounding it. The lake reaches depths of 60 feet and offers year-round camping options in hardwood forest terrain. Most campsites sit on elevated terrain that drains well during rainfall, with temperatures ranging from 30°F to 85°F depending on season.

What to do

Fishing opportunities: The stocked fishing lake at Cardinal Center Campground provides catch-and-release fishing with a gazebo overlooking the water. As one camper noted, "Great fishing and a playground, and it is a good place for a cookout. They have bathrooms and a water fountain."

Trail exploration: Tree Haven Campground features extensive walking paths through wooded areas. "This place is huge, tons of paths for walking and exploring. Also features mini golf, volleyball, basketball, an in-ground pool and a pond. Our favorite part was the off leash dog trails that were a perfect place to let the pup run," shares a reviewer who appreciated the pet-friendly amenities.

Shooting sports: For campers interested in outdoor target practice, Cardinal Center Campground offers comprehensive shooting facilities. "They have a nice indoor pool and shower rooms attached... Also a shooting range if that is something you like," mentions a visitor who stayed during Thanksgiving.

Water activities: Splash pads and swimming pools provide cooling options during summer months. At Sunbury/Columbus North KOA Holiday, "The pool and splash pad were well kept and very clean," according to a reviewer who found the campground well-maintained.

What campers like

Private, spacious sites: Many campers appreciate the room to spread out at dog friendly campgrounds near Alum Creek Lake. "Our site had a deck right behind the camping pad because the site has a descent slope. The fire pit was down the slope which was cool being out of site from walkers," notes a camper at Mt Gilead State Park Campground.

Clean facilities: Visitors consistently mention well-maintained bathrooms and showers. A camper at Pastime Campground reported, "Restrooms and showers were kept clean by city workers. The dump station was fine."

Family activities: Multiple dog-friendly Alum Creek area campgrounds offer recreational options for all ages. "We had an absolute blast at the campsite! We stayed in L and the kids loved being close to the water. The campground beach is an absolute must and we even got close to wildlife (aka some pesky raccoons)," shares an Alum Creek State Park camper.

Quiet atmosphere: Many campgrounds provide peaceful surroundings away from urban noise. "We like this small campground, it works well for us. Our pad was pretty level and not hard to back into with a small camper," reports a visitor to Mt Gilead State Park.

What you should know

Site flooding concerns: During heavy rainfall, certain sites may experience water accumulation. "Sites are nice with some sites able to boat up to them. Be careful with rainy weather, some sites have flooded in poor weather," warns one Alum Creek State Park camper.

Seasonal operation: Several campgrounds limit availability to warmer months. Tree Haven Campground operates from "May 1 to November 1" according to their seasonal information, making advance planning necessary for spring through fall visits.

Site spacing variations: Some campgrounds feature tightly packed sites while others offer more seclusion. "The sites next to us were empty but the way it was set up, the site next to us would have had an rv angled right behind us," notes a Cardinal Center visitor regarding site layout.

Reservation recommendations: Popular dog-friendly campgrounds near Alum Creek fill quickly, especially during summer and holiday weekends. "From what I've been told you might be able to get into one if you book the whole season a year in advance," reports an Alum Creek State Park camper regarding waterfront sites.

Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Multiple campgrounds feature play areas for children of different ages. At Berkshire Campgrounds, a visitor appreciated that "This campground has it all. Full hookups and great activities for all. There is a small lake that you can walk around."

Recreational options: Activities beyond traditional camping keep families engaged. At Cardinal Center Campground, "They have an indoor pool, stocked fishing lake (catch and release) the indoor swimming pool. The camp also has some very nice cabins."

Theme weekends: Several campgrounds host special event weekends with additional family activities. "We were there for the Halloween weekend and it was amazing. Can't wait to go back," shares a Cross Creek Camping Resort visitor who participated in seasonal programming.

Safety considerations: Family campers should note campground-specific rules. "The bathrooms and showers were some of the least clean we have ever seen. The check in building had a fire and we never saw any employees," reports one Alum Creek State Park camper about a specific experience.

Tips from RVers

Hookup availability: Full-service sites vary widely between campgrounds. At Cross Creek Camping Resort, a reviewer noted, "Good mix of pull through and back in and is big rig friendly. Plenty to do for the kids. Pool looks nice, was not open yet for the season."

Site leveling requirements: Some campgrounds have uneven terrain requiring preparation. "Our leveling system has the front wheels off the ground. Many full time units here beautiful patios and decor," explains a Cross Creek visitor regarding site conditions.

Seasonal considerations: Water services may be limited during colder months. At Korbel Campgrounds, "Nov 1 - Apr 1, no water is available," making self-contained RVs necessary during winter visits.

WiFi reliability: Internet access varies significantly between campgrounds. "Wi-Fi (2.4 and 5G) seems good throughout the entire park. Best Wi-Fi I've ever had at a campground. They have Wi-Fi repeater towers everywhere you look," reports a KOA Holiday visitor about connectivity options.
