    SUMMARY PRESENTED BYT-Mobile

Merchants Millpond State Park welcomes pets at multiple campground options including the Family Campground, Canoe-In Campground, and Backpack Campground. Campers can bring dogs to tent sites and RV areas, with pets required to be leashed at all times. The spacious family campground offers good separation between sites, providing privacy for campers with dogs. Clean, well-maintained bathhouses are centrally located within walking distance of all pet-friendly sites. The primitive canoe-in sites also allow pets, though owners should be prepared for wildlife encounters including alligators that inhabit the pond. Sites feature fire rings, picnic tables, and tent pads suitable for setting up with pets.

Dog owners should plan for insects when visiting Merchants Millpond, particularly ticks and mosquitoes that can affect both humans and pets. Proper insect repellent is essential when camping with dogs, especially during warmer months. Several miles of pet-friendly hiking trails wind through the eastern woodlands and swamp ecosystem, including the Lassiter Trail with wooden bridges offering views of the cypress-filled millpond. Visitors with dogs should be aware of wildlife including turtles, snakes, and resident alligators when exploring water trails by canoe or kayak. The park's unique ecosystem makes it ideal for nature-loving dog owners who want to explore a different environment, though the park lacks modern RV amenities like hookups. Dogs are not permitted to swim in the millpond due to alligator presence, and owners should maintain control of their pets on all trails.

      Bells Island Campground

      Peaceful Waterside Camping

Coming to North Carolina, coastal camping is something which has to be on your bucket list. I traveled down the highway looking to get closer to Kitty Hawk where I wanted to see some of the many first in flight stops and this place jumped out at me and welcomed me in from the highway.

I stopped and. a local store and they raved about its location and proximity to the water so I simply had to stop and see for myself. I was not disappointed.

If you are looking for waterfront camping and activities I cannot see any location being more serene especially around sunrise and sunset. The water front stretches for miles and is so peaceful. Despite being located near the town of Bells itself you feel removed from civilization and next to your new close friend at the campground, where everyone seemed very nice.

As a tent camper I found the only downfall to be that the facility only had one shower area for the entire camp, and on a busy weekend like when I was there on a holiday that could be a bit of a juggling act for everyone. The bathrooms themselves were nice, though a bit dated and the entire camp was quaint.

They had a dock and launch which made for perfect water activities and when I was there they had many outdoor activities for everyone to enjoy.

When you think of one of those cute communities nestled right on the east coast you see in your mind something that looks just like this place. It was ideal!

      TIPS:

      • When traveling in this area check out the slightly strange and interesting spot Diggers Dungeon, a monster truck Mecca that will bring up a few memories even if you aren't really a fan. This spot is really interesting and has a diner, petting zoo and even tours of the shop where they put together the most famous monster truck of all times "Gravedigger"
      • Bring your water toys. This place is the perfect site for getting out the jet ski or just floating in the amazing feeling waters.

Outer Banks West - Currituck Sound KOA

      Very quiet and peaceful

We came for a weeklong working trip. I brought my laptop to work from home and this place was perfect. The view was beautiful and the weather was great at night to just sit outside and enjoy the view. It was a very quiet camp with a great dog park. I look forward to visiting again soon.

      False Cape State Park Campground

      Worth The Hike/Bike In

Even on the fourth of July weekend, with every campsite booked, this place was quiet and felt very removed from the beaches several miles north in Virginia Beach. We biked in from Little Island Park.

From the parking lot to our campsite, it was about 7.5 miles. Some campsites are closer by a couple of miles. We're both in good shape, and on bike we made the trek in less than an hour. I rode my mountain bike, and my wife road her hybrid commuter bike without issue. We brought a collapsible 5 gallon jug that I had to ride back to the visitors center (about 2 miles from our campsite) to fill up.

It was a fair amount of work, but we took our 9 month old and 2 year old children. We towed them in a trailer and they loved their time at the beach.

The visitors center is a great spot to stop and rest for a while. It is air conditioned, and they have a small gift shop with cold drinks and ice cream available.

We were on site 22, which is ocean side, and right up next to 23. They could easily act as companion sites. If you camp on the ocean side, you are permitted to set up your tent on the shore (in  a designated strip) as long as you let them know at the visitors center.

All other campers we met were quiet and friendly. and we really just could not have asked for a better situation.

This is my kind of day at the beach. I loved it.

Also, pets are allowed, but they are not allowed through Black Bay. You either have to bring them in via boat, or coming up south from North Carolina.

      Sandy Bottom Nature Park

      Great for outdoor activities

This campsite and park is a ton of fun. We've never camped here but we lived about 5 minutes down the road from the park and absolutely loved it. There are miles of trails around the lake and through the woods you can follow. It is extremely dog friendly with a fenced in dog park as well. There are kayaks and paddle boats you can rent by the hour. This park has plenty of camping spots and also has some yurts that are available to rent out. I would recommend this spot to anyone who wants a convenient family friendly camping/outdoor experience.

Outer Banks West - Currituck Sound KOA

      Relaxation on the Sound.

This KOA is actually still under construction. As with everything else Covid-19 has set it back. But there are many sites available. A lot of the amenities are already available. Dog park, shower house, store, children's play area and they can fill your propane tanks for you. Full hookups with WiFi and cable. Drive through and back in sites with water views all around. We spent a week there and it was so relaxing. They also rent campers and little trailers. Check out their website.

      Holiday Trav-L-Park

      Off-season

This place is huge! Great amenities, but hardly any are open during the winter and it seems many have been closed due to covid. Store, game room, and restaurant is closed. They do have a heated indoor pool, laundry, numerous restrooms, and a great dog park. There is yard/tiki art and paintings around the park. The mini golf course is a bit run down, but it's free during off season and the course greens are in good shape. I would love to see the place in the summer.

      North Bayshore Campground

Excellent family run campground close to Sandbridge beach

Wonderful spot away from crowds but close to beach. Tent, RV or “ tiny cabin” options. Clean, quiet and pretty. Canal runs around campground that gives you access to Back Bay. Pool and playground. Small store. Super friendly staff. Love it there. 5 minute drive to Sandbridge. 15 to Va Beach strip. Level ground but water collects with heavy rains- to be expected at he beach.

I think pets are OK. Good showers.

      Indian Cove Camp Resort

Camping Resort available to buy deed

This is our home base camping resort. It’s a deeded membership that allows for 14 day stays with a single deed. We’ve stayed a few times prior to owning with friends who sponsored us. There are both paved and unpaved sites with full hookups, and tent sites that feature water and electricity. Bath houses throughout property, and a laundry, community center, two pools, a large pavilion and ball court. We love having play areas for the kids and a dog park for our fluffy kid.

      Isle of Wight Family Campground

      Nice and Very Quiet!

This is a really nice campground. They have on-site bathrooms/showers as well as laundry. It's mostly RV spots but they also allow tent camping and have a couple cabins available for rent. They have a dog park area, playground and pool. The store has items for purchase and a gathering room. They do potlucks and get togethers often for the campers. The staff is very friendly and super helpful. You can purchase firewood and propane on-site. Each spot has a concrete padded area with a picnic table and fire pit. It is a little ways out of town in any direction bit it's very nice and quiet out here as you're surrounded by woods. They also have a fishing pond and trails on-site. This really is one of the best campgrounds I've ever been to! Definitely recommend.

    Guide to Sunbury

Merchants Millpond State Park provides multiple camping options within its unique cypress swamp ecosystem. The park's terrain features a 760-acre millpond with dark, acidic waters flowing through stands of bald cypress and tupelo gum trees. Summer temperatures average 85-90°F with high humidity, while spring and fall offer milder conditions between 60-75°F. Primitive campsites throughout the park require visitors to pack in water and pack out trash.

    What to do

Canoe exploration with wildlife awareness: At Merchants Millpond Canoe-In Campground, visitors can paddle through unique cypress waterways. "The scenery is TOP KNOTCH! Absolutely beautiful in the lake which is not well marked due to limited visibility in the swampy environment. Lots of underwater obstructions so use caution. U DO NOT want to end up in that water," notes Mark N.

Paddling preparation: Rent canoes at the visitor center for day use or overnight camping. "Canoes are self service (you have to get them off the rack, get paddles and lifejackets yourself). Put in is easy, and they use a buoy system to help navigate to the canoe-in campsites," explains Becky E.

Seasonal fishing opportunities: Fish for native species in the millpond, but check conditions before planning a trip. "After seeing some of the pictures I decided to call them ask how bad all the algae and overgrowth was and was told it was pretty clear. That was not the case... the overgrowth is terrible you will not make it through," warns Edward H. about attempting to use motorized boats.

    What campers like

Privacy between sites: The Family Campground at Merchants Millpond offers well-separated camping areas. "The sites have good separation between them and don't feel crowded at all. Very well maintained. Very helpful rangers that stopped by daily to welcome us and to collect trash," reports Alisa K.

Winter camping comfort: Facilities remain open and comfortable year-round. "We went for Valentine's Day weekend. Only a couple of other people were there, and we hardly saw them... The bath house was real nice. They had heaters running and they were so toasty, also very clean," shares Charli R.

Unique ecological experiences: The park's distinctive ecosystem draws nature enthusiasts. "The cypress trees, swamp flora and fauna are amazing. One of my kids caught a gar, we saw a bald eagle's nest, snakes, frogs, turtles, and lily pads everywhere," describes Becky E. from her experience at Merchants Millpond.

    What you should know

Weather and seasonal considerations: Spring and fall offer the most comfortable camping conditions. "I would recommend visiting in the cooler months of spring or fall. In April, the site was probably only 25% occupied and it's still cool enough not to be bothered by mosquitoes," advises Boone at Merchants Millpond Backpack Campground.

Navigation challenges: The pond can be difficult to navigate without proper guidance. "The kayak/canoe round was not easy to navigate so bring your 3rd party map/GPS. The maps they provide are almost useless because it outlines the terrain but because it's a swamp the terrain changes with the water level," explains Mark N.

Group camping logistics: For larger parties, the Benett's Creek area offers group sites. "My group and I stayed at the Benett's creek high ground primitive camp sites 1-3. It was a 4.5 mile paddle to the site, then roughly 1.5 down to the dock with a staged vehicle," explains todd B.

    Tips for camping with families

Pet-friendly trail selection: When bringing dogs camping near Sunbury, North Carolina, choose trails suitable for pets. "Trails were nice too, we used our ebikes on the bike trail," mentions Charli R. about family-friendly activities with pets.

Wildlife viewing with children: Rocky Hock Campground offers additional water-based activities. "We kayaked in their creek that goes out directly to the Chowan River. Large fishing pond, firewood available, clean shower house, game room and tidy clean sites," reports Kathleen.

Alternative camping options for beginners: For families new to camping with pets, Northwest River Park provides easier access options. "Overall amazed at the cleanliness of the campground. The staff is very friendly. The park was very quiet going into the night," notes Joseph H.

    Tips from RVers

Hookup limitations: RV campers should prepare for limited amenities. "The only downside is that they don't have any hook ups and it gets pretty hot in the summer months," explains Jim M. about Merchants Millpond State Park.

Alternative RV campgrounds: For RVers seeking full hookups while exploring pet friendly camping near Sunbury, North Carolina, Davis Lakes Resort offers more amenities. "Nice enough place, just too far out of town for my needs at that time," mentions Cliff M. about the location's convenience.

Extended stay considerations: RVers planning longer visits should check reservation limits. "The camp grounds have RV sites and cabins but no tent camping. We have stayed several times as my son and his family live in the area. The staff is very accommodating and friendly," shares Leslie R.
