Merchants Millpond State Park provides multiple camping options within its unique cypress swamp ecosystem. The park's terrain features a 760-acre millpond with dark, acidic waters flowing through stands of bald cypress and tupelo gum trees. Summer temperatures average 85-90°F with high humidity, while spring and fall offer milder conditions between 60-75°F. Primitive campsites throughout the park require visitors to pack in water and pack out trash.
What to do
Canoe exploration with wildlife awareness: At Merchants Millpond Canoe-In Campground, visitors can paddle through unique cypress waterways. "The scenery is TOP KNOTCH! Absolutely beautiful in the lake which is not well marked due to limited visibility in the swampy environment. Lots of underwater obstructions so use caution. U DO NOT want to end up in that water," notes Mark N.
Paddling preparation: Rent canoes at the visitor center for day use or overnight camping. "Canoes are self service (you have to get them off the rack, get paddles and lifejackets yourself). Put in is easy, and they use a buoy system to help navigate to the canoe-in campsites," explains Becky E.
Seasonal fishing opportunities: Fish for native species in the millpond, but check conditions before planning a trip. "After seeing some of the pictures I decided to call them ask how bad all the algae and overgrowth was and was told it was pretty clear. That was not the case... the overgrowth is terrible you will not make it through," warns Edward H. about attempting to use motorized boats.
What campers like
Privacy between sites: The Family Campground at Merchants Millpond offers well-separated camping areas. "The sites have good separation between them and don't feel crowded at all. Very well maintained. Very helpful rangers that stopped by daily to welcome us and to collect trash," reports Alisa K.
Winter camping comfort: Facilities remain open and comfortable year-round. "We went for Valentine's Day weekend. Only a couple of other people were there, and we hardly saw them... The bath house was real nice. They had heaters running and they were so toasty, also very clean," shares Charli R.
Unique ecological experiences: The park's distinctive ecosystem draws nature enthusiasts. "The cypress trees, swamp flora and fauna are amazing. One of my kids caught a gar, we saw a bald eagle's nest, snakes, frogs, turtles, and lily pads everywhere," describes Becky E. from her experience at Merchants Millpond.
What you should know
Weather and seasonal considerations: Spring and fall offer the most comfortable camping conditions. "I would recommend visiting in the cooler months of spring or fall. In April, the site was probably only 25% occupied and it's still cool enough not to be bothered by mosquitoes," advises Boone at Merchants Millpond Backpack Campground.
Navigation challenges: The pond can be difficult to navigate without proper guidance. "The kayak/canoe round was not easy to navigate so bring your 3rd party map/GPS. The maps they provide are almost useless because it outlines the terrain but because it's a swamp the terrain changes with the water level," explains Mark N.
Group camping logistics: For larger parties, the Benett's Creek area offers group sites. "My group and I stayed at the Benett's creek high ground primitive camp sites 1-3. It was a 4.5 mile paddle to the site, then roughly 1.5 down to the dock with a staged vehicle," explains todd B.
Tips for camping with families
Pet-friendly trail selection: When bringing dogs camping near Sunbury, North Carolina, choose trails suitable for pets. "Trails were nice too, we used our ebikes on the bike trail," mentions Charli R. about family-friendly activities with pets.
Wildlife viewing with children: Rocky Hock Campground offers additional water-based activities. "We kayaked in their creek that goes out directly to the Chowan River. Large fishing pond, firewood available, clean shower house, game room and tidy clean sites," reports Kathleen.
Alternative camping options for beginners: For families new to camping with pets, Northwest River Park provides easier access options. "Overall amazed at the cleanliness of the campground. The staff is very friendly. The park was very quiet going into the night," notes Joseph H.
Tips from RVers
Hookup limitations: RV campers should prepare for limited amenities. "The only downside is that they don't have any hook ups and it gets pretty hot in the summer months," explains Jim M. about Merchants Millpond State Park.
Alternative RV campgrounds: For RVers seeking full hookups while exploring pet friendly camping near Sunbury, North Carolina, Davis Lakes Resort offers more amenities. "Nice enough place, just too far out of town for my needs at that time," mentions Cliff M. about the location's convenience.
Extended stay considerations: RVers planning longer visits should check reservation limits. "The camp grounds have RV sites and cabins but no tent camping. We have stayed several times as my son and his family live in the area. The staff is very accommodating and friendly," shares Leslie R.
