    BACK TO NATURE

I stayed in one of their cottages during October. The cottage is furnished, has a queen size bed and 2 sets of bunk beds; nice living room/dining room combo, full kitchen with dishes, pots, etc.; TV; fireplace; outside deck with grill; and screen porch. There is also a firepit for enjoying the relaxing fire and evening quiet. You have to bring your own firewood. There is a grocery store about 6 minutes away for convenience. Trails, access to the Chesapeake Bay, Spanish moss. manned Visitor Center, privacy and security.

    North Bayshore Campground

Excellent family run campground close to Sandbridge beach

Wonderful spot away from crowds but close to beach. Tent, RV or “ tiny cabin” options. Clean, quiet and pretty. Canal runs around campground that gives you access to Back Bay. Pool and playground. Small store. Super friendly staff. Love it there. 5 minute drive to Sandbridge. 15 to Va Beach strip. Level ground but water collects with heavy rains- to be expected at he beach.

I think pets are OK. Good showers.

    Beautiful Plantation

Awesome things to see here! It’s been a working farm since 1619 with beautiful gardens and livestock. The mansion and outbuildings are pretty cool as well.

Restrooms were not very clean. Each time I went to the ladies room, the door was propped wide open, and when I went to brush my teeth in the morning the counters were covered in moths and bugs and gnats. Yuck. The showers were ok.

Ice is $3 and you can grab that from the camp host if it’s after 4pm which is when the store closes. It’s cash only, exactly change. Wood is $6 and there’s a metal box - pay on your honor.

The beaches were very nice. You’re on the Cobham Bay vs. right on the river and in the dead of the summer, the water is sooo unpleasantly warm. You can wade out at the very least 100 yards and still be less than knee-deep, water still hot. The access to the little beaches are short but moderately steep, especially with lots of beach gear or strollers. It also seems to get washed out so watch your steps.

The little visitor center near the water access has cold drinks, souvenirs, ice cream, etc. They obv. accept credit cards. You can bring your dog into this area. There’s also a little wildlife info center and restrooms in the same buildings. There are also areas for day use and a good sized parking lot near the water access.

Straight across the river is Jamestown and Williamsburg, which is cool. I think I was told it’s about four miles across. That being said... those are your closest grocery stores and you have to take the Jamestown Ferry to get there. There is a Dollar General near the park, for odds and ends. Just make sure to stop in advance for what you need because you won’t find much in Surry.

Stopped at the Surry Seafood Co. for lunch and it was ok. Food and service was mediocre, but there was a nice water view from the deck. Was looking forward to stopping for some shrimp to cook that night from Colonial Seafood market but after walking in, I walked right back out. It was so unclean and didn’t smell fresh at all.

We took a beautiful drive around the plantation. The cabins look great and we’ll definitely try those out next time. There were corn fields and soybeans for miles. Such a great park due to its history.

Campsites themselves were pretty nice; not too close together. Our site had the tent pad down away from the picnic table and fire ring which was kind of nice. It was really shady, too. Room for hammocks.

Each site has a picnic table, fire pit, tent pad, lantern pole. Verizon service was great.

    Isle of Wight Family Campground

    Nice and Very Quiet!

This is a really nice campground. They have on-site bathrooms/showers as well as laundry. It's mostly RV spots but they also allow tent camping and have a couple cabins available for rent. They have a dog park area, playground and pool. The store has items for purchase and a gathering room. They do potlucks and get togethers often for the campers. The staff is very friendly and super helpful. You can purchase firewood and propane on-site. Each spot has a concrete padded area with a picnic table and fire pit. It is a little ways out of town in any direction bit it's very nice and quiet out here as you're surrounded by woods. They also have a fishing pond and trails on-site. This really is one of the best campgrounds I've ever been to! Definitely recommend.

    Fort Eustis Recreation Area

    Excellent Bargain

    Season: year round

    Reservations: 757-878-2610 or 2565

    Pets: Leashed

    Sites: 9 $20.00 with w/e/s

    Cabins: 5 $75.00 daily

Picnic table, grill, playground, bowling, paintball, tennis, propane, water, electric, trash, laundry, showers, fishing

It was as if they have two sections in the campground. One section seems to have long term and then the section where the 9 sites are is nice and open with many mature trees. There is nice separation between sites. I loved the area but I am a country girl at heart. Nice to be in the heart of the military. BTW"GREAT" Military Transportation Museum. The commissary is fantastic, didn't go to the PX.

    Virginia Beach KOA

    Wonderful campground

We camped in site 364, deluxe patio pull thru. Concrete pad and fire pit, along w Trex style table and chairs were the perfect addition to the site. We used them all weekend. So much nicer than the traditional wooden picnic tables. Trolley runs every 20 mins or so to free beach area and along Atlantic Ave. $4pp over 17yo. Giant water slide, 2 very clean pool areas w a lot of seating, jumping air pillow and bike rentals. Tons for kids to do. Tonight we made and launched rockets. Overall, an excellent visit. One complaint is that people don’t seem to teach their children campground etiquette. We had kids run thru our site all the time. That was annoying, esp during meal time. Overall, we highly recommended visiting this KOA!!

    First Landing State Park Campground

    Great beach spot

We stayed 3 nights in W/E Back In, Site 141, mostly hard packed sand surrounded by trees. The angle is a little weird to back into, but the site itself is nice and feels private. The fire ring and picnic table (old and wood) is at the very back of the site. A pretty nasty storm rolled through one night and the trees actually provided a little protection.

    Davis Lakes Resort

    Fun quick getaway

Went with friends to get away for a quick weekend.  We stayed in the Eagles nest cabin.  It had plenty of room for 5 adults and 2 teenagers.  The cabin was very clean and offered everything that you would need.  The gas grill and fire ring was nice.  Fishing in the ponds was good.  Store is very limited on what it has.  The only reason that it doesn't get 5 stars in the WiFi was very limited.

Guide to Sunbury

Cabin rentals near Sunbury, North Carolina provide travelers with convenient access to the Albemarle Sound region. This coastal plain area has an elevation near sea level and experiences mild winters with hot, humid summers. Waterfront cabin properties face seasonal weather challenges, particularly during hurricane season from June through November, when strong winds can affect camping conditions.

What to do

Water activities on Albemarle Sound: North Landing Beach offers several options for enjoying the water, including kayaking and fishing. The campground provides beach access with "beautiful sunsets" according to visitor Brandi I. One camper noted, "Kayaking is great. Lots of fishing" while enjoying their stay.

Local wildlife viewing: Sandy Point Resort Campground provides opportunities to observe coastal birds and aquatic life. Visitors appreciate the natural setting, with one camper sharing it has a "beautiful view from the back of my Mini-Van camper. Nice and windy! Kept the bugs away for sure."

Mini golf and recreational activities: Vacation cabins near Sunbury provide access to family-friendly activities. At Virginia Beach KOA, visitors can enjoy "Two great pools, tons of activities for the kids even during the week" according to one reviewer, while another mentioned "the mini golf course" as one of the available amenities.

What campers like

Quiet waterfront settings: Many lodging options in the Sunbury area offer peaceful water views. One camper at Sandy Point described it as having "not a whole lot of people. Pretty windy area being right on the water," making it ideal for those seeking a less crowded environment.

Convenient transportation: Holiday Trav-L-Park offers a shuttle service for cabin guests and campers, with one visitor highlighting: "They have transportation via Trolly bus that comes through frequently throughout the day to transport you to Various beach side activities where otherwise you would have to pay for parking."

Clean facilities: Cabin accommodations in the region typically maintain good standards. At Northwest River Park, a visitor reported: "Overall amazed at the cleanliness of the campground. The staff is very friendly. The park was very quiet going into the night."

What you should know

Variable Wi-Fi quality: Internet connectivity can be unreliable at cabin rentals in the Sunbury area. A visitor to Davis Lakes Resort noted, "The only reason that it doesn't get 5 stars is the WiFi was very limited," suggesting guests should prepare for connectivity challenges.

Seasonal operation differences: Opening schedules vary between properties. At Davis Lakes Resort, a guest reported, "There are no amenities in the fall and winter but in the summer there is a lake with a swimming area and a snack bar. The fishing is year round."

Weather considerations: Summer heat can impact tent campers, while cabins provide better protection. A visitor to First Landing State Park warned: "I wouldn't recommend tent camping in the middle of summer - my husband and i both got sick. The beach was nice and quiet, and the water wasn't too cold."

Tips for camping with families

The facilities are great and there is easy access to the beach. Would definitely recommend to any family that wants to start camping."

Tips from RVers

Off-season advantages: Winter months offer lower rates and fewer crowds at cabin and RV sites. A visitor to Virginia Beach KOA noted: "Prices come way down during the off season. Much of the facilities are closed but they keep open one of their bathhouses. Otherwise it's a peaceful stay in the winter months."

Site conditions: Surface quality varies between campgrounds. One RVer at Holiday Trav-L-Park reported: "The site was half gravel and half grass. The grading wasn't great and the gravel was thin. Lots of water puddles and the grass was swampy," suggesting visitors should check site conditions before booking.

Remote work capabilities: Some Sunbury-area accommodations support digital nomads. A KOA visitor shared: "I'm here for hybrid remote work and the T-Mobile signal is nice and strong for my needs, both for work and entertainment. Easy to get in and out of the campground."
